AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Annesley? Keep It Switched Off

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then leave your engine off — and the ignition as well. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water. Not like fuel, it neither ignites nor blends, and nothing starts until the engine sucks it round. A drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Annesley, is generally what AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it's caught before your motor has been run. Before anything, ring us on 0333 366 0103.

Annesley, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do straight away

Things to do:

  • So nobody can turn the ignition on, pull your keys out.
  • If you are anywhere near moving traffic, put your hazards on.
  • So you can give us which liquid it was and roughly how much, keep the receipt or the empty bottle.
  • Ring right where you are. Quote a NG15 0 postcode or the closest street name, and no one has to hunt for you.

Not to do:

  • Not even briefly, and not to roll the vehicle: the engine stays off.
  • Do not switch your ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • No extra fuel added. The AdBlue will not mix, and so it is pointless.
  • Any driving at all is best avoided, even a short way along Byron Road.
  • Emptying your tank on your own beside the road is not one to try.

Moving the car off the island is a job for staff to help with, wherever Annesley forecourt you are on, the Shell included. Stopped on your own drive? Then it remains exactly as it is.

AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Made for the exhaust, AdBlue has no business in the engine. Its own tank keeps it, and from there it is sprayed into the exhaust, where it treats the gas. Neither side fits the other: urea doesn't belong in an injection pump, and a pump can't take urea.

Tipped in with the diesel, it stays separate rather than blending — quite unlike fuel. Heavier than diesel, it sinks and collects underneath it — the same spot the intake draws from. A motor topped up on a driveway in Kirkby Woodhouse overnight and not started since is the simple one. No pump has pulled the AdBlue up so far — though when the motor turns, that's what is pulled first, straight from the bottom of that tank.

Two kinds of harm come from there. Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it leaves urea that hardens in filters and narrow channels; meanwhile, because it eats at some metals, each part it reaches keeps suffering for as long as it stays inside. A car left standing in Annesley with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank is not. Diesel lubricates the high-pressure pump and each injector as it passes; water gives none of that, which is a separate kind of damage.

Why AdBlue in a diesel is often more significant than petrol

A problem of thin fuel is what you end up with after fuelling a diesel with petrol at the Esso. No harm comes as long as it sits unused, blended into your diesel — only once the engine runs on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is an issue of the wrong substance altogether. It cannot simply be run through, because it does not burn. Crystals and corrosion remain after the following tankful, and AdBlue splits back out of your diesel, and so thinning it won't work. Hence the flush matters so much, and turning your key "to see" costs more with AdBlue than almost any other slip — in Kirkby-in-Ashfield or the centre of Annesley alike.

The good news is the same as with petrol. Clearing a tank is the simplest part on a fuel system, and without running, the AdBlue stays in it — anywhere across Nottinghamshire the car sits.

Annesley: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

Many motors put the AdBlue cap beside the diesel cap, occasionally behind a single flap, and in dim light the two can appear identical. Nobody means it. Usually it is not the filling station: someone picks up a bottle driving home and pours it in outside the house.

A few familiar ways cover most cases. The top-up is rushed outside Newstead Primary and Nursery School, because the dash lit up with a warning while the kids were dropped off. Someone pours the container in at home, just off Moseley Road, as the day ends. Another version: darkness, the car park outside Badger Box, and someone opening that flap the first time.

It crops up most in a hire car, a brand-new car, a fleet vehicle, or the spare car of a home with one of each fuel types — the vehicles drivers use least. Anywhere in Nottinghamshire, Annesley as well, the slip does not change, and nor does the first response: leave it off.

Already started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank in Annesley?

The AdBlue has left your tank, then. The filter and pipework have had it sucked through, and some running takes it on to the high-pressure pump and every injector.

You may notice your engine running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, maybe on the way back from Annesley Forest or halfway across Annesley. No starting it again to check: pull over once it is safe, then switch everything off. Every start pulls more of that through.

On the M1, under 3 miles from Annesley, the first junction is where to exit, and somewhere sensible is where to stop — not driving on.

How far it went matters. A few hundred yards across Annesley to the car park by All Saints Church is a very different job from a run towards Nottingham, under 10 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with each mile. Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

We do all of the flushing where the vehicle has ended up, and once your engine has been run there is more of it. Permanent damage is very uncommon when it is spotted quickly.

Annesley: how AdBlue is cleared from a diesel

Wherever it has come to rest around Annesley — a filling station, a layby, a driveway, a street beside Annesley and Felley Parish Hall — the van travels to your vehicle. What went in, roughly the quantity, plus whether the engine has been run: our engineers check first, because those shape the work.

Next, draining your tank on the spot takes out the polluted diesel and the AdBlue in one go. Residue from AdBlue will not flush out unaided, so the fuel system gets a full flush, which counts far more with urea than for petrol. A test of your car follows at the end, after clean diesel goes in and the fuel filter is cleaned or, if needed, replaced. About half an hour once we arrive is usual for most jobs when the motor hasn't run. The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Last, the system is primed with new diesel. Whether it's a parking space at Newstead or a driveway around Annesley, that is where we start the car and you head off. The check before our engineers leave is that it runs correctly on new diesel. We do it all wherever your car has ended up, and it never has to go to a garage. Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both afterwards.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Annesley: the cost of fixing it

There is no honest single quote, because the jobs are not the same. What shifts the cost is, firstly, whether the engine has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue went in; and then where the car is and whether our van can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight spot behind Annesley Colliery.

Before a quote, never after, each call from Annesley begins with the same three questions: the fuel, the quantity, plus if the engine ran. Those replies turn a range into a straight price.

Quoted on the call before the van sets out, it is paid for that day — card or phone, no deposit. Misfuelling cover comes with plenty of insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van arrives.
