Antron: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Find Your Situation

What to do about AdBlue in a diesel tank depends on one thing more than any other: whether your engine has been run since it went in. Not run yet? Then leave the vehicle that way, wherever your vehicle is — Antron or Treverva. Switch nothing on, ring 0333 366 0103, and count on a thorough flush after a drain, done just where your car stands around Antron. When your motor has been run, pull in safely first, then switch the vehicle off. It's a larger job, though step one does not change.

Below: the cases our engineers meet, wherever across Cornwall. Pick yours.

AdBlue in a diesel on a Antron forecourt

The cap you unscrewed was the wrong one — and you just spot it as you're stood at the pump, bottle or the nozzle in hand. Anywhere around Antron, then — Asda, Gulf, or anywhere else nearby.

Meaning? Finding out here is as good as it gets. No pump has drawn it in, so the AdBlue stays only in the tank.

What to do: don't get back in and start it to clear the pump. Ask the staff to help you roll your car into a parking space, keep the receipt or the bottle, and ring us from the forecourt. The equipment is explosion-proof and safe on a live forecourt, so a vehicle that cannot be pushed away gets cleared right at the pump.

Antron, at home: AdBlue in the diesel tank

The warning light had been on for days. Only by the recycling, the empty container in your hand, did you glance back at the cap you'd used at the driveway. Drives near Church Road get it as much as any other street.

Meaning? Provided the vehicle has not moved since, it is second to the pump case. Diesel and AdBlue stay separate: the AdBlue drops to the base of your tank and remains put, however long the night.

Put your keys indoors overnight — otherwise someone might drive it away first thing — and call us. Your driveway is where it gets emptied, be it around Antron or Trenoweth. Late-night empties outside a house are fine: the pumps are quiet.

AdBlue in a diesel and already driving in Antron?

You filled up, set off, and a mile or two later your engine began to run roughly, smoke, lose power or light up the dashboard. It might have been driving for Truro, under 10 miles away, or simply along Antron Lane.

Put simply: the AdBlue has been sucked into your fuel system. Distance decides how deep it goes: filter and pipework to begin with, then the high-pressure pump and each injector. Each mile and each restart takes it further.

What to do: pull over where it's safe to do so then switch off. On the M5, over 50 miles from Antron, that means the next junction, not the services further on. It won't have cleared, and so there is no point starting it again to find out. Phone, and say how far the vehicle went.

AdBlue in the wrong tank of a hire, lease or company car

You have had this vehicle barely a week. The AdBlue filler is right alongside the diesel filler, which you didn't know, because your own vehicle either has no AdBlue or keeps it somewhere else. It can happen to anyone, anywhere across Cornwall.

Put simply: an extra stage on top of the situations above, and those depend on if it has run. Work on your vehicle often needs the owner's approval under hire or fleet terms.

Next: ring the hire company or the fleet manager first, then us — sorting it before our arrival is quicker. Hanging on for a reply at the car park at Penryn, or near St Laud? Keep your car off meanwhile.

Antron: unsure if it was AdBlue in your diesel tank?

At times, "I think so" is the most anyone can honestly say. The bottle is lighter than it should be, there's a faint smell of ammonia about your filler, and you can't remember which cap you took off. The gates of Mabe Community Primary School in a rush, say, or a friend's drive over in Longdowns.

Meaning? Spills outside the inlet never touch your engine at all. AdBlue inside your diesel tank does. If there is AdBlue in the tank, firing up the vehicle would draw it in, and it wouldn't tell you which either.

Next: assume it went in, then leave the engine off. Ring and give the details: we'd rather find a clean tank than empty one after your motor has been run.

The common ground in each Antron AdBlue drain

Whichever scenario you are in, this job starts the same way. Three questions are asked once our engineers reach your car — on a forecourt, a drive, a road beside Flexsi Sports Centre or the car park outside New Inn at Mabe Cornwall: the fluid, the amount, and whether the motor has been started. Answers shape the job; the quote follows on the call while nobody has left yet.

Then that tank is cleared and the system flushed thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol: AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't rinse out on its own. Fresh diesel goes in once your filter is cleaned or replaced, and the car is finally checked. Where your motor has not been started, expect about half an hour once we arrive, in most cases.

Firing it up comes at the end. With new diesel in, it runs while we confirm it is running properly, and then we go. Lasting damage is very unusual when it's noticed quickly, and the entire job is done where the vehicle is. You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer. Dig out your insurance while we arrive: cover for misfuelling comes built into plenty of policies.
