Ardrossan: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

If AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank, leave the motor off then keep your ignition off. In plain terms, AdBlue is just urea in water. Not like fuel, it neither ignites nor blends, and nothing happens until your engine pulls it round. A drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Ardrossan, is usually all AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it's caught before your motor has been run. Nothing comes before ringing 0333 366 0103.

Ardrossan, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do straight away

Things to do:

  • Pocket the keys, and that prevents someone turning the electrics on.
  • If you are anywhere near moving traffic, put your hazards on.
  • Which product, and about what amount? Save the bottle or your receipt, and our technicians will know.
  • Give us a postcode starting KA22 8, or whatever street is nearest, and the van reaches you straight — so ring from wherever you are.

Never do these:

  • Don't start your motor, even for a moment to move the vehicle.
  • Your ignition stays off: on lots of diesels, switching it on is enough to start the fuel pump.
  • Do not top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel; it separates out.
  • Any driving at all is best avoided, including a short stretch down Glasgow Street.
  • Draining that tank yourself beside the road is not worth trying.

Get the attendants to help you roll the vehicle away from the pumps if you are on a forecourt around Ardrossan, whether it's the Asda or elsewhere. At your own driveway, don't touch it at all.

AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not your motor. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to fresh it. Neither side fits the other: urea does not belong in a pump, and an injection pump can't deal with urea.

Tipped in with your diesel, it stays separate instead of mixing — entirely different from fuel. It's heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and collects at the bottom of your tank, which is where the pickup pulls fuel from. Simplest of all: one that had AdBlue in Stevenston last night and hasn't turned since. The AdBlue sits at the base of your tank, undrawn — but it would be the first thing through once your motor runs, ahead of any diesel at all.

It does two kinds of harm from there. What remains once the water evaporates is urea, which turns into crystals: they lodge in narrow passages and block filters. Worse, it eats at certain metals in a fuel system, and keeps going till it's flushed out. A car left sitting around Ardrossan with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank is not. Diesel protects the high-pressure pump and each injector as it passes; water gives no lubrication, which is a separate form of damage.

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is often worse

Fill a diesel with petrol in error over at the Esso, and this issue is thinned fuel. Harm just comes from driving on it. Blended into your diesel and left in your tank, it causes nothing.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different matter: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all. It doesn't burn, and so it can't simply be run through. Nor can it be watered down, since it separates again — and the next tankful won't rinse away deposits or corrosion. So the flush matters for more here, and turning the key "to see", in the heart of Ardrossan or out in Seamill, does more harm than nearly any other error.

As with petrol, there's good news. Not run? Then the AdBlue sits only in the tank, the simplest section of the whole system to empty, wherever your vehicle has stopped in North Ayrshire.

Ardrossan: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

Many vehicles put the AdBlue filler alongside the diesel one, now and then under a single flap, and in dim light the two may appear identical. Nobody intends it. A container picked up when driving home and poured in outside the house, rather than at the forecourt, is the usual route.

Mostly, it occurs in one of a couple of familiar ways. Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside the local primary school the top-up is hurried. Near Harbour Street, a driver pours a bottle in at home in the evening. Else, in dim light outside the pub in the village, your car gets topped up by a driver using that flap for the first time.

The least known vehicles see it the most — hire cars, brand-new cars, fleet cars, and the spare motor of a family with one of each fuel types. Same mistake, same first response — leave it off — wherever you happen to be in Ardrossan or the rest of North Ayrshire.

Started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Ardrossan?

Then the tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. With any running time, it travels to the high-pressure pump and each injector, after passing via your filter and lines.

Expect rough running, exhaust smoke, lost power, warnings on the dash, or a stall — coming back from Holm Plantation, perhaps, or part way across Ardrossan. No starting it again to test: stop once safe, then switch everything off. With each start, more of that is pulled through.

Ardrossan lies under 15 miles from the M77; if you were on it, exit by the first junction and pull up safely rather than carrying on.

Distance matters: every mile pushes the AdBlue deeper in, and so heading for Glasgow, under 50 miles away, gives a much larger job than crossing Ardrossan to the car park by Macfadzean's Monument. Tell us roughly how far it had come.

We do all of the flushing where the car has stopped, and once the engine has run there is more of it. Lasting damage is very uncommon if it's noticed soon.

What emptying AdBlue from a diesel involves around Ardrossan

Wherever it has stopped in Ardrossan — a forecourt, a lay-by, a drive, a road beside War Memorial — our van comes to your vehicle. The job rests on three replies, and our engineers get before all else — what got in, the quantity, and if your engine has turned over.

Next, draining that tank on the spot removes the contaminated diesel and the AdBlue in one go. With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, the flush matters: the whole system is flushed right through since residue will not flush out unaided. Fresh diesel goes in once the fuel filter is cleaned — or replaced, if it needs to be — and after that your vehicle is tested. The majority of these jobs are a half-hour visit once our technicians turn up, if the motor hasn't run. Low-noise enough to use outside a house at night, and fine on a working forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

Priming the system with fresh diesel comes last. You drive off as soon as our technicians have started the car, and it makes no difference whether the vehicle is on a driveway in Ardrossan or in a bay at Ardrossan Town. Before leaving, our technicians make sure it's running smoothly with new diesel in. We do it all wherever your car has stopped, and it never has to go to a workshop. You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report later on, which is what insurers want.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around Ardrossan?

Because each jobs differ, a flat figure would not be fair. The price shifts first with how long, if at all, your engine has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that was put in. After that it depends on where your car is and whether a van can reach it safely, which is easier on an open drive than in a tight spot behind Ardrossan Castle.

That's why each call from Ardrossan starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what went in, how much, and whether it has run. Those replies shrink a range down to a single number.

Before a van sets off, you are told our price by phone. And payment is on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing in advance. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours while we're on the way.
