AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Ashmore Lake? Don't Start It

With AdBlue in the diesel tank, your ignition remains off and so does the engine. In plain terms, AdBlue is just urea in water. The trouble begins once it's sucked through your lines — it will not ignite, and it will not blend with diesel. If your motor hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually emptied and carefully flushed where the vehicle sits around Ashmore Lake. Before anything, phone us on 0333 366 0103.

Ashmore Lake, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do right away

To do:

  • Keys out — then no one can switch anything on.
  • If you are at all near moving traffic, put the hazards on.
  • So you can give us which fluid it was and roughly what quantity, keep the receipt or the empty bottle.
  • Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting WV12 4, or the name of the nearest street, gets our van to you without a search.

Do not do these:

  • Not even for a second, and not to roll the vehicle: your engine stays off.
  • Turning the key to ignition by itself sets your pump running on plenty of diesels. Avoid it.
  • Pouring in more diesel doesn't work: AdBlue settles out rather than thinning.
  • Keep the vehicle where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short way up Himley Close.
  • Emptying your tank on your own beside the road is not one to try.

Get the attendants to help you move your car away from the island if you're on a forecourt in Ashmore Lake, whether it's the the nearest petrol station or somewhere else. Parked on your own driveway? Then it remains just as it is.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Not your engine but the exhaust is where AdBlue is meant to go. Kept in a separate tank, it is squirted into the exhaust to treat the fumes. No part in an injection pump is designed for this liquid — and none of it was intended to travel that way.

It doesn't combine. After it is poured into the tank, AdBlue behaves nothing like diesel. Denser than diesel, it sinks and pools below it — the very place the intake draws from. Simplest of all: a vehicle that got AdBlue in Lane Head last night and hasn't been started since. The liquid waits at the foot of your tank, undrawn — though it will be the first thing through once your engine starts, before any diesel at all.

Two kinds of damage follow from there. As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps labouring on the components it reaches for as long as it stays there. If the AdBlue has reached the lines, waiting overnight in Ashmore Lake makes things worse. In the tank alone, waiting costs nothing. Diesel protects the high-pressure pump and every injector as it passes; water offers none of that, which is a second kind of harm.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Ashmore Lake

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is commonly worse

Petrol put into a diesel on JET's forecourt makes your fuel watery — that's the whole issue. No harm comes as long as it sits unused, blended into the diesel — only when the engine works on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is another problem: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all. It cannot simply be run through, since it does not burn. Nor can it be thinned, because it separates back out — and the next tankful will not rinse away deposits or corrosion. So the flush matters for more here, and turning the key "to see", in the heart of Ashmore Lake or out in Short Heath, costs more than almost any other error.

The same good news holds as with petrol. If your engine hasn't run, the AdBlue is still inside the tank, and that tank is the simplest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever across West Midlands your car is sitting.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Ashmore Lake

It is not on purpose. Many cars keep the AdBlue cap beside the diesel inlet, now and then behind one flap, and muddling them up is easy after dark. Usually it is never the forecourt: a driver picks up a bottle driving home and tips it in outside the house.

The ways it happens are few and familiar. Hurrying, outside Pool Hayes Primary School, after a warning light flashed on during the school run, someone tops up the car. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Alton Avenue. Or the vehicle is topped up in the car park at Pool Hayes, in poor light, by somebody who has never opened that flap before.

The least familiar cars get it most — rentals, brand-new ones, company ones, and the other vehicle in a home with both fuels. Same slip, an identical first response — keep it off — anywhere you happen to be around Ashmore Lake or the rest of West Midlands.

Already started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank in Ashmore Lake?

Then the AdBlue has left the tank. It's been drawn through the filter and the lines, and if your engine ran for any time, it has reached the high-pressure fuel pump and your injectors.

Perhaps coming back from Black Country Millennium Forest, or part way across Ashmore Lake, your motor might run lumpy, smoke, lose pace, light up the dash or stall. When you safely can, pull over and switch it off — without turning it on again to see. Each start pulls more of that through.

Ashmore Lake sits under 3 miles from the M6; if you were on it, exit by the next junction and pull up somewhere safe instead of driving on.

Each mile pushes the AdBlue deeper in. That is why crossing Ashmore Lake to park near St Anne and a drive of under 5 miles towards Wolverhampton are very different jobs. Let us know roughly how far it had come.

Wherever the car came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to flush once your engine has been running. Very seldom does it leave lasting damage when it's caught soon.

Emptying AdBlue in a diesel around Ashmore Lake: what it takes

We come to your car, wherever it has stopped around Ashmore Lake: a side street near Short Heath Methodist Church, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. Three replies shape the job, so first our technicians ask what was put in, about what quantity, and whether the engine has turned over.

Next, emptying the tank right there removes the contaminated diesel along with the AdBlue together. A careful flush counts far more with AdBlue than with petrol, since residue won't wash away on its own. Next, the fuel filter: flushed, or replaced if it must be. Then fresh diesel, and then a test of your vehicle. If your motor hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once our engineers are there. The pumps are explosion-proof, safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

The final step is to prime the fuel system on new diesel. Starting the car comes next, and then you head off from where your car is parked, at Willenhall or on a driveway in Ashmore Lake. It is tested on fresh diesel to confirm it runs smoothly before our engineers head off. Our technicians do it all wherever the vehicle has stopped, and it never has to be taken to a garage. You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report later, which is what insurers want.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Ashmore Lake

There is no honest single price, since the jobs are not the same. What shifts the cost is, first, whether your engine has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue was put in; and then where your car is and whether a technician can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight space behind Furzebank Worship Centre.

Ahead of any quote, not afterwards, each call from Ashmore Lake begins with the same three checks: the fuel, the amount, plus whether the engine ran. With those replies, the range narrows to one fixed number.

Before a van heads out, you hear our price on the phone. Then you pay on the day, card or by phone, with nothing upfront. Misfuelling cover is part of many insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van gets there.
