AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Ashton Gate, and What to Do Next

Has your motor turned over since the AdBlue got in? That one question decides nearly everything about what comes next. Not started so far? Then keep the car like that, wherever your vehicle sits — Ashton Gate or Ashton Vale. Leave your engine and your ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103; it's generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Ashton Gate. Pull over the minute it is safe then switch off, if it has been run. Step one stays unchanged, even though the job grows.

Anywhere in Bristol it happened, one of the situations below fits yours.

On a Ashton Gate forecourt with AdBlue in a diesel

Just now, nozzle still in hand, it dawns on you that the cap you opened was the wrong one, there at the petrol pump. It might be the Harvest Energy, or the Sainsbury Fuel, or another station around Ashton Gate.

In short: there is no better place exists to spot it. No pump has drawn it in, so the AdBlue stays just in the tank.

What to do: don't get back in and crank it to clear the pump. Get the attendants to help pushing it to a space, save the receipt, then phone us from there. Can't move it by the pump? Our explosion-proof kit keeps a live forecourt sensible, and so we can drain the car in place.

AdBlue in your diesel tank on a Ashton Gate drive?

On the dash, a reminder had shown all week. Bought a bottle, tipped it in at home, binned the empty — and at that point looked at the cap again, too late. Right off Raynes Road is no different from anywhere.

The upshot: zero driving since makes this nearly equal to finding it at the petrol pump. Diesel and AdBlue keep apart: the AdBlue settles to the base of that tank and remains there, no matter how long it waits.

Next: prevent any early drive by putting the keys indoors, then ring us. Your drive is where it is emptied, whether in Ashton Gate or Bedminster. The pumps are quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

AdBlue drain on a forecourt in Ashton Gate

Set off with AdBlue in a diesel in Ashton Gate?

Rough running, smoke, lost power or a lit dashboard arrived a mile or two after the top-up. It might have been driving to Bristol, under 3 miles away, or simply along Dampier Road.

Meaning? The fuel pump has taken the AdBlue up. Through the filter, along the lines, and — the further the mileage — deeper into the high-pressure pump and each injector. Each mile and each restart takes it further.

Your move: stop anywhere safe, then turn your motor off. Services farther along are too far: from the M32, under 3 miles out of Ashton Gate, take the first junction. Don't restart it to see if it has cleared; it will not have. Call, saying what distance the vehicle was driven.

AdBlue in the wrong tank: hire, lease and company vehicles

It is a car you have had for a week. On your own vehicle, AdBlue is absent or somewhere else. On this one, its cap is right by the diesel inlet — a surprise to you. Throughout Bristol, nobody is safe from it.

What it means: the same as the scenarios above, depending on whether it's run, with one more stage. Any work on the car often requires the owner's approval under rental or fleet agreements.

Do this: hire firm or fleet manager first, us second, since sorting it early saves time. Keep it off as the reply arrives, whether you are parked at Parson Street or near Saint Francis Centre.

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Not sure, around Ashton Gate

Honestly, the best answer may be that you think so. The bottle is lighter than it should be, there's a faint smell of ammonia about your filler, and you can't remember which cap you took off. The gates of Ashton Gate Primary School in a hurry, say, or someone's drive out in Hotwells.

In short: spillage round your filler leaves your motor no harm. The diesel tank with AdBlue inside is another story. You cannot tell which by turning the ignition, and doing so will draw in any AdBlue that is in the tank.

Next: assume it got in, then leave the engine off. Ring us and explain what you saw; we'd rather check a tank that turns out free of AdBlue than drain one that has already been run.

Ashton Gate: what each AdBlue drain has in common

Whatever the case, a single opening is used. Anywhere your car is — The Rising Sun's car park, a street by Saint Francis Church, a drive, a forecourt — our van arrives and we ask about the fluid, the quantity, plus if your engine has been run. Over the phone, ahead of dispatch, you are told our quote, and those replies shape the work too.

Then your tank is drained and your system rinsed thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol: AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't rinse out on its own. Clean diesel goes in after the fuel filter is cleaned or replaced, and your car is then checked. The majority of unstarted vehicles are a half-hour job after the moment our engineers arrive.

Starting it comes at the end. Our test that it runs smoothly on fresh diesel comes before our technicians head off. Long-term damage is very rare if it is caught quickly, and the entire job is done where the car is. Payment comes on the day, never in advance. For your insurer, there is a VAT invoice plus a written report from the engineer. Check your insurance before we're en route: misfuelling cover comes included in plenty of policies.
