AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Ashton, and What to Do Next

One fact counts above all once AdBlue is in a diesel tank, and it is whether your motor has been started afterwards. Out in Coppermine or here in Ashton, an unstarted motor must stay unrun. Leave the motor and your ignition off then phone 0333 366 0103; it is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Ashton. Already started? Stop when safe, then switch everything off. It is a bigger job, though step one doesn't change.

Below: the situations our engineers see, wherever across Inverclyde. Choose yours.

At the pump in Ashton: AdBlue in a diesel

Just now, nozzle yet in hand, it dawns on you that the cap you took off was the wrong one, right at the petrol pump. Maybe you're at the BP, maybe at the Tesco, possibly somewhere else in Ashton.

The point: of all places to notice, this is the best. No pump has pulled it through, and so the AdBlue stays just inside your tank.

What to do: do not get back in and start the car to clear the pump. Ring us from the forecourt once the car is in a bay — the attendants will lend a hand to roll it — then save the receipt. If it can't be moved, it can be cleared at the petrol pump: the equipment is explosion-proof and safe on a working forecourt.

At home around Ashton with AdBlue in the diesel tank

Several days had passed with the dash light on. A bottle bought at the garage, emptied in on the driveway — and it was just at the recycling that the cap caught a second look. Homes just off Hillside Road get caught out as much as everywhere else.

What it means: if you have not driven since, this is nearly as good as the forecourt. Diesel and AdBlue stay separate: the AdBlue settles to the base of your tank and remains put, no matter how long the night.

Next: prevent an early move by putting the keys in the house, then ring us. Our engineers drain the car on your driveway, whether that's around Ashton or out in Trumpethill. Even at night, the pumps are quiet enough for a driveway.

AdBlue drain on a forecourt in Ashton

Ashton: set off with AdBlue in a diesel?

Filled up, drove away, and before long your motor was turning unevenly, smoking, losing power, or lighting up your dash. Barrhill Road, say, or the way towards Glasgow — a run of under 25 miles.

The upshot: your system has drawn AdBlue in already. The high-pressure pump and each injector get it too on a longer trip, after the filter and lines have had it. More driving, more restarts: further it travels.

Next: find a safe place, pull in, then switch your motor off. Leave at the first junction — not the services beyond — if you are on the M8, under 15 miles from Ashton. It won't have cleared, and so there is no sense starting it again to find out. Phone us and say how far you went.

Hire, lease or company car with AdBlue in the wrong tank

You have had this car barely a week. Your own motor either does without AdBlue or keeps it elsewhere, so nothing told you the AdBlue cap was just next to your diesel. It can happen to anyone, anywhere across Inverclyde.

Put simply: an extra step on top of the cases above, which depend on if it's run. Plenty of hire and company agreements require the owner's sign-off for repairs.

What to do: ring the hire firm or your fleet manager first, then us. That's faster settled before we get there than after. If you are stranded in the car park outside Gourock, or by Jubilee Drinking Fountain, whilst you wait for an answer, leave the car off.

Unsure about AdBlue in your diesel tank around Ashton?

"I think so" is sometimes as honest answer there is. A slight ammonia smell lingers near the filler, the bottle feels too light, and the cap you took off is a blur. Maybe it happened in a hurry at the school gates at the local primary school, or on a friend's drive in Cardwell Bay.

Put simply: a spill near the filler leaves the engine unharmed. If it is inside the diesel tank, though, it does. Firing up the vehicle will not tell you which, and if there is AdBlue in that tank it will pull it in.

What to do: treat it as if it went in. Don't crank it. Call us and explain what you saw; we'd rather check a tank that turns out free of AdBlue than drain one that has already been run.

The common ground in each Ashton AdBlue drain

The job opens identically, whichever the situation. Anywhere the vehicle is — Montieth's's car park, a road beside Tower Hill, a drive, a filling station — the van gets there and asks for the liquid, the quantity, plus whether your motor has turned over. The price is given over the phone, before a van leaves, and the answers set the job.

Draining the tank comes first, followed by a full flush — more vital with urea than after petrol, because crystals and corrosion won't go on their own, however long it sits. Your filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the car is tested. Not started? In that case roughly half an hour once we are there is most jobs.

Our engineers fire it up last. Our technicians make sure it runs smoothly on clean diesel before we go. Our technicians do the entire job where the vehicle is, and lasting damage is very unusual if it has been spotted soon. Paying comes that day, never upfront. For your insurer, there is a VAT invoice plus a written report from the engineer. Dig out your insurance while we arrive: misfuelling cover is built into many policies.
