Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Auchinraith

Engine off, ignition off: that is where you begin if AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank. Urea dissolved in water is all AdBlue is. The trouble starts once it is sucked through the lines — it won't ignite, and it won't blend with diesel. Caught before your engine has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Auchinraith. Before anything, phone us on 0333 366 0103.

Auchinraith, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do at once

Things to do:

  • Keys out — that way no one can power anything on.
  • If you're anywhere close to moving traffic, put your hazards on.
  • Keep the till receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what was put in and about how much.
  • Call right where you are. Say a G72 0 postcode or the nearest street name, and nobody has to search for you.

Never do these:

  • No starting the engine — not briefly, not to shift your car.
  • Plenty of diesels power their pump the instant the ignition comes on, and so leave the car off.
  • No extra fuel on top. The AdBlue won't mix, so it is pointless.
  • Even a short way up Ballantrae Road is too far to drive it.
  • Don't try to drain the car yourself by the roadside.

At a forecourt around Auchinraith, whether it's the Shell or another one, ask the attendants to help you roll the vehicle clear of the petrol pump. On your own drive, don't touch it at all.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

The motor is not what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is. From a separate reservoir it is fed straight to your exhaust, treating what your engine emits. Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is designed to handle it.

Fuel mixes; AdBlue, after tipped in, will not. The behaviour is nothing like diesel's. It sinks, since it is heavier than diesel, and pools down where the pickup takes its fuel from. A car topped up on a driveway in Low Blantyre overnight and not started since is the straightforward one. Nothing has sucked the AdBlue up yet — though when your motor runs, that's what is pulled first, directly from the bottom of the tank.

It does two kinds of harm from there. Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it strands urea that crystallises in filter elements and tiny passages; meanwhile, since it attacks some metals, each part it reaches suffers for as long as it remains in there. If the AdBlue has reached the pipework, leaving it overnight around Auchinraith makes things worse. Inside that tank alone, time costs nothing. Water lubricates nothing. The high-pressure pump and every injector need diesel flowing through them, so the water part damages them in its own right.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Auchinraith

Why is AdBlue in a diesel frequently the bigger problem?

Put petrol in a diesel at the Asda and you have an issue of thin fuel. No damage comes while it sits put, mixed into the diesel — only when your motor runs on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid itself is simply the wrong one. It cannot just be run through, since it doesn't burn. Whether the car sits in Hillhouse or the heart of Auchinraith, firing it up "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than nearly any other mistake, and the flush matters for more. Why: it won't remain mixed, so watering it down fails; and deposits and corrosion survive the next tankful.

The same good news holds as with petrol. Anywhere in South Lanarkshire the vehicle has stopped, an unrun engine means the AdBlue still inside the tank: the simplest bit of any fuel system to empty.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Auchinraith

After dark, two caps together — the AdBlue one and the diesel one, now and then behind one flap — may appear the same. Nobody intends it; many designs allow it. Most of the time it happens with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the forecourt.

The ways it takes place are few and familiar. Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside the local primary school the top-up is hurried. Close to Fortingall Road, a driver pours a container in at home after work. Or someone new to that flap refills your vehicle in dim light, stopped in the car park by Red Burn Farm - Farmhouse inns.

Hired vehicles, new vehicles, company motors, or the second vehicle in a family with one of each: the least familiar vehicles get it the most. Wherever you are around Auchinraith or the rest of South Lanarkshire, it is the same error and the same first answer: leave the car off.

AdBlue in your diesel tank in Auchinraith, and the engine started?

Then the AdBlue has left that tank. It's been sucked through the fuel filter and the fuel lines, and if your motor ran for any time, it has got to the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel injectors.

You may see your motor running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, possibly on the way back from Glenlee Woods or halfway across Auchinraith. No starting it again to test: stop once it is safe, then turn everything off. Each start pulls more of it through.

Exit the M74, under 3 miles from Auchinraith, by the next junction and park somewhere safe, rather than driving on.

How far it went matters. A couple of hundred yards across Auchinraith to the car park by International Brigades Memorial is a very different job from a run towards Glasgow, under 10 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the fuel system with every mile. Let us know roughly how far it had come.

Once the motor has run, the flush covers more, and all of it is done where the vehicle has ended up. Lasting damage is very uncommon if it's caught quickly.

Auchinraith: how AdBlue is emptied from a diesel

A road beside Burnbank Bowling Club, a driveway, a layby or a forecourt: anywhere your car has stopped around Auchinraith, we come to it. Which fluid went in, about how much, and if the engine has been run: our engineers check before all else, since those decide the job.

Next, draining the tank right there removes the contaminated diesel along with the AdBlue together. With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, the flush counts: the whole system is cleaned all the way through since what remains will not wash away by itself. Testing your vehicle follows last, after fresh diesel is added and the fuel filter is cleaned or, if necessary, replaced. If your engine has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once our technicians are there. Explosion-proof pumps mean a live forecourt safe to work on, and they're quiet enough to spare the neighbours at night.

Lastly, the fuel system is bled with clean diesel. Firing it up comes next, and then you head off from where your car is parked, by Blantyre or on a drive around Auchinraith. The check before we leave is that it runs correctly on fresh diesel. Our engineers do it all wherever your car has stopped, and it never needs to be taken to a garage. Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come afterwards.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Auchinraith: the cost of fixing it

There's no fair single quote, because the jobs are not the same. What changes the price is, first, whether the engine has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue went in; and then where the vehicle is and whether a van can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight spot behind Blantyre Miners' Stone.

That is why every call from Auchinraith starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what got in, how much, and if it has run. When they are answered, a range turns into one fixed figure.

You hear that price on the phone, before anybody heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.
