Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Balloch

Motor off, ignition off: that's where you start if AdBlue has gone into the diesel tank. Water with urea mixed in it: that is AdBlue. Being water-based, it will not burn and won't blend with diesel; damage only comes once your pump starts pulling it. Caught before your motor has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Balloch. First, ring us on 0333 366 0103.

AdBlue in the diesel tank in Balloch: the first few minutes

Things to do:

  • Take your keys out, and so no one switches the ignition on.
  • Put the hazards on if you're anywhere near moving traffic.
  • Hold on to the receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what got in and about how much.
  • Call us from where you are. A postcode starting G83 8, or the name of the closest street, brings the van to you without a search.

Things not to do:

  • No starting the engine — not for a second, not to reposition your vehicle.
  • Don't switch the ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • Don't top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue does not dilute in diesel; it separates out.
  • Even a short distance along National cycle route 7 is too far to drive it.
  • Do not try to drain the vehicle yourself at the kerbside.

On a forecourt around Balloch, whether it's the BP or another one, ask the staff to help you push your car clear of the petrol pump. At home, your car remains just where it was left.

What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not the motor. Its own reservoir holds it, and from there it is sprayed into the exhaust, where it treats the gas. No part inside an injection pump is designed for this liquid — and no part of it was meant to go that way.

Inside a diesel tank it acts very differently from fuel. It does not mix in. Denser than diesel, it sinks and collects underneath it — the very place the pickup sucks from. Simplest of all: one that had AdBlue in Tullichewan overnight and has not been started since. The liquid sits at the base of the tank, undrawn — but it would be first through if the motor starts, ahead of any diesel at all.

From there it does two kinds of harm. It attacks some metals found in fuel components, attacking any part it touches until it's removed from your system. And when the water goes, the urea forms crystals that block filters and lodge in narrow channels. Overnight, a vehicle parked in Balloch with AdBlue in its lines grows worse; where it is only inside your tank, nothing changes. Water lubricates nothing. The injection pump and each injector depend on diesel running past them, so the water content damages them by itself.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Balloch

Why is AdBlue in a diesel commonly the bigger problem?

Put petrol in a diesel at the John H Glen & Son and you have an issue of thin fuel. No harm comes while it sits unused, blended into the diesel — only when your motor runs on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid itself is plainly the wrong one. It can't simply be run through, because it does not burn. It does not stay mixed, so it cannot be diluted. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your motor "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether the car is in Alexandria or the middle of Balloch.

As with petrol, there is good news. If the engine has not run, the AdBlue is still inside your tank, and the tank is the quickest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever in West Dunbartonshire the vehicle is sitting.

Balloch: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

Plenty of motors place the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel cap, now and then under a single flap, and after dark the two may appear identical. No one means it. Mostly it takes place with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the forecourt.

It tends to take place in a few familiar ways. Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside the local primary school the top-up is hurried. A driver tips the container in outside their house, just off Balloch Road, as the day ends. One more pattern: dim light, a pub car park outside Dog House Bar, and someone using that flap for the first time.

The least familiar vehicles get it the most — rentals, brand-new cars, fleet ones, and the other vehicle in a family with both fuels. Wherever you're in Balloch or the remainder of West Dunbartonshire, it is the same error and the same first answer: leave the car off.

Started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Balloch?

Then the AdBlue has left the tank. With any running time, it goes on to the high-pressure pump and every injector, after passing through the fuel filter and lines.

Lumpy running, smoke, dropping power, dashboard lights or stalling: any might show up, maybe part way across Balloch or returning from Moss o' Balloch Plantations. When safe, pull over and switch everything off — without restarting to test. With each start, more of it is pulled through.

On the M8, under 10 miles from Balloch, the next junction is where to leave, and somewhere sensible is where to park — not carrying on.

How far it went matters. A few hundred yards across Balloch to the car park by St Kessog's R.C. Church is a very different job from a run towards Glasgow, under 25 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the system with every mile. About how far it had come is worth telling us.

There's more to flush once the motor has run, and our engineers do all of it where the vehicle has stopped. Very rarely does it leave long-term damage if it's caught quickly.

What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Balloch?

Our technicians come to the car, wherever it has stopped in Balloch: a side street close to Balloch Library, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. Three replies shape the job, and so before anything else our technicians ask which fluid was put in, roughly the amount, and if your motor has run.

The contaminated diesel and the urea leave together after your tank is emptied, right there. With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, the flush counts: the fuel system is flushed all the way through since what remains won't wash out by itself. The fuel filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested. Not run? In that case count on roughly half an hour on site for most jobs. Low-noise enough to use outside a house at night, and fine on a working forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

Priming your system with clean diesel comes at the end. Whether it is a parking space at Balloch Central or a drive in Balloch, that is where we fire it up and you set off. Our technicians check it runs smoothly on new diesel before we go. No garage is required at any stage, with the entire job done then and there. You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report afterwards, which is what insurers ask for.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Balloch

There's no honest single price, because the jobs aren't the same. The cost shifts first with how long, if at all, the engine has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that went in. After that it rests on where the vehicle is and whether a van can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight space behind Walled Garden.

With that reason, every call from Balloch opens with the same trio — which fluid got in, what quantity, whether the engine ran — ahead of a quote. Their replies narrow a range down to a single figure.

Priced on the call before the van sets out, the job is settled on the day — card or phone, no deposit. While the van is on the way, dig out your policy: plenty include misfuelling.
