AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Bank Top? Don't Start It
AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then keep the motor off — and the ignition as well. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water. Being water-based, it will not burn and won't blend with diesel; damage just comes once your pump starts pulling it. If the engine hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally drained and thoroughly flushed where your car sits around Bank Top. Before you do anything else, ring 0333 366 0103.
Bank Top, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do right away
Do:
- Keys out — that way nobody can switch anything on.
- If you are at all near moving traffic, put the hazards on.
- The empty bottle or the receipt shows us the product and the amount, and so don't throw it out.
- Call right where you are. Say a NE15 9 postcode or the closest street name, and no one has to search for you.
Do not:
- Not even briefly, and not to roll your vehicle: the engine remains off.
- Switching your key to ignition alone sets the pump running on plenty of diesels. Skip it.
- No extra fuel on top. The AdBlue will not blend, and so it's pointless.
- Do not drive the car anywhere, not even a short stretch along Drove Road.
- By the road, do not attempt emptying it yourself.
Moving your car off the pumps is a job for staff to help with, wherever Bank Top forecourt you're on, the Shell included. On the drive, the car stays exactly as it is.
What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?
AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not your motor. Its own reservoir holds it, and from there it's sprayed into your exhaust, where it treats the gas. Nothing inside a fuel pump is designed for this liquid — and none of it was intended to travel through one.
Fuel mixes; AdBlue, after poured in, will not. The behaviour is nothing like fuel's. It's heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of your tank, which is where the pickup sucks fuel from. Once your system runs, the AdBlue is top of the list to be pulled through. Until then it waits underneath the diesel, and that is why a car topped up in Newburn yesterday and never switched on remains the simple case, provided no one touches the key.
Two kinds of harm come from there. Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it leaves urea that hardens in filters and narrow channels; and, since it attacks certain metals, every part it reaches keeps suffering for as long as it stays inside. A motor left sitting in Bank Top with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank isn't. Then there's the water: it offers no protection to the components that need it the most — the injection pump and every injector.
Why AdBlue in a diesel is regularly more serious than petrol
Put petrol in a diesel at the another forecourt nearby and you have a problem of thin fuel. It mixes with the diesel, and whilst it is in your tank it does no harm; the damage comes from running the motor on it.
The issue with AdBlue in a diesel is a totally wrong substance. It can't just be run through, because it doesn't burn. Whether the car sits in Houghton or the heart of Bank Top, firing it up "to see" costs more in this case than almost any other mistake, and the flush matters more. The reasons: it won't remain mixed, so watering it down fails; and deposits and corrosion outlast the following fill.
The same good news holds as with petrol. Never started? Then the AdBlue waits only inside the tank, the easiest section of the whole system to clear, wherever the car has come to rest around Tyne and Wear.
How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank in Bank Top?
No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many cars waits right next to the diesel filler, sometimes under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light. Mostly it's not the forecourt: someone buys a container heading home and pours it in at home.
Usually, it occurs in one of a couple of familiar ways. Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside Throckley Primary School the refill is hurried. In the evening, a container goes in on a driveway near Ollerton Drive. Or the car is topped up in the car park at Throckley Union Jack Social Club, in poor light, by a person who has never opened that flap before.
It crops up most in a hire car, a brand-new car, a company motor, or the spare car in a family with one of each fuels — the cars people know the least. Anywhere across Tyne and Wear, Bank Top included, the mistake does not change, and nor does the first response: leave it switched off.
Bank Top: started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?
Then the AdBlue has left that tank. It has been sucked through the fuel filter and your lines, and if the engine ran for any time, it has reached the high-pressure fuel pump and your injectors.
Perhaps coming back from Throckley Recreation Ground, or part way across Bank Top, the engine may go lumpy, smoke, lose pace, light up the dash or cut out. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and don't restart the vehicle to check. With each start, more of it is pulled through.
Bank Top lies under 10 miles from the Central Motorway East; if you were on it, exit at the first junction and pull up safely rather than carrying on.
Distance matters: every mile pushes the AdBlue further into the system, and so driving towards Newcastle upon Tyne, under 10 miles away, gives a far bigger job than hopping across Bank Top to the car park by Throckley Hall Commemorative Plaque. Let us know about how far it had come.
Our engineers do all of the rinsing where the car has come to a stop, and once the motor has been started there is more of it. Noticed quickly, it very seldom leaves long-term damage.
What draining AdBlue from a diesel involves in Bank Top
Wherever it has come to rest in Bank Top — a filling station, a layby, a driveway, a road beside Throckley Hall — our van travels to your vehicle. Before anything else our engineers ask what got in, roughly how much, and if the engine has been run, since those answers settle the work.
On the spot, your tank is then emptied, and all of the contaminated diesel and the urea leave as one. Residue from AdBlue will not wash away unaided, and so the fuel system gets a careful flush, which matters much more with urea than with petrol. A test of your vehicle comes at the end, after fresh diesel is added and the fuel filter gets flushed or, where needed, swapped. About half an hour on site is usual for most jobs where the motor has not run. The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.
The last step is to prime the fuel system on fresh diesel. At that point our technicians start the engine and you head off, whether from a parking space by Wylam or a driveway around Bank Top. The check before our engineers go is that it runs smoothly on fresh diesel. We do it all wherever your car has stopped, and it never has to be taken to a garage. At the end, there is paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer.

No moving is needed. In Bank Top, a residential suburb, a mobile service fits: your car is emptied on the spot, be it on a drive, a side street, a parking area or a filling station.
What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Bank Top?
Since each jobs vary, a single price would not be honest. The price shifts first with how long, if at all, the motor has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that was put in. After that it rests on where the car is and whether a technician can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight spot behind Sports Pavilion.
What was put in, what quantity, and whether the engine ran: every Bank Top call opens by asking exactly those, ahead of any figure, never after. Those replies shrink a range down to one number.
Quoted by phone before the engineer heads out, it is settled that day — card or phone, nothing in advance. Look at your policy whilst we're on the way: plenty include misfuelling cover.
Bank Top: still alongside the car?
Then the most handy thing you can do is nothing to your car. Keys out; motor and ignition off. Say it's AdBlue, about what quantity, and whether it ran, on 0333 366 0103. After that Petrol in Diesel takes over, across Bank Top or anywhere within Tyne and Wear.
