Bantam Grove: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the engine and your ignition off and call 0333 366 0103. A drain and a full flush, carried out right where your vehicle sits around Bantam Grove, is normally what it takes if caught before your engine runs. Here in advance? Then what follows explains why it comes about and what to prevent it ever happening.

AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

Plenty of newer diesels in Low Town End, as well as Bantam Grove, carry on two liquids; your engine gets only the diesel. AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank comes with a filler of its own. Plenty of cars have a single flap for the two, while others move the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet. Topping up the diesel side at the pump goes on constantly. The AdBlue side is topped up far less frequently, normally from a bottle, and usually by a person who has to stop and think where it goes. The slip lives in that gap.

Bantam Grove: how AdBlue in the diesel tank happens

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out completely, your vehicle goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Wide Lane before work, or in the car park at Gardeners Arms on the way home.

The old car's cap is where your hand reaches — yet a hire car, a new vehicle or a company car keeps the fillers somewhere else. That is the second thing: an unfamiliar vehicle.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the tip after it has started. It's a few seconds, whether out in Gillroyd or right in the heart of Bantam Grove.

Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

A couple of seconds is all these take — so run through them before you pour anything, on a driveway in Daisy Hill or a forecourt around Bantam Grove.

  • Position can mislead; the cap does not. AdBlue caps are often blue or carry the word "AdBlue" — diesel ones normally do not.
  • The size. On many vehicles the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.
  • The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Many motors say there which fuel goes where.
  • In your boot or under the bonnet: that is where your filler is if it is not by your diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.
  • Whoever had it before will know. Check as you collect a hire car or company car — from Morley's car park, say — not once the light comes on.

How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

The day the light goes on, wherever around West Yorkshire, use this routine.

  • Switch off after you park — flat ground, engine stopped, and not rushed beside Topcliffe Avenue on the verge.
  • Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.
  • Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.
  • Stop once your tank is topped up or the bottle runs dry; until then, pour gently using its built-in spout.
  • Close the cap, then check again — making sure the diesel filler remained shut throughout. After that, start the car.

Find during the second or third step that AdBlue went in the diesel filler? That's where you stop. Never go on to stage five.

AdBlue in the diesel tank already, around Bantam Grove?

Short list, then. First: your motor remains off. Leave your ignition off as well, since on many diesels switching it on alone runs the pump. Do not top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is pulled from.

On a forecourt — Sainsbury's, Shell or another — the staff will normally help roll the car away, when you ask. On your own drive in Bantam Grove? Then the car remains where it is.

Already started? Stop once it is sensible, then turn off. Bantam Grove sits under a mile from the M62; there, use the next exit. Mileage counts — a quick hop across Bantam Grove makes a smaller job than heading under 5 miles towards Leeds — so say about how far it went.

Our arrival in Bantam Grove, and what happens next

Outside Morley Newlands Academy, near Newlands Methodist Church or on your own drive: wherever the vehicle has stopped, we come to it. Both the work and the quote depend on three replies — what fluid, which quantity, and whether it's run — so our technicians ask. During the phone call itself, you hear the price — before anything else.

Next: a drain, then a thorough flush of the entire system. With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own. Once the filter is flushed — or replaced, where required — fresh diesel goes in, and finally the car is tested. We don't go until it has been started and is running smoothly.

With pumps fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which the motor hasn't run need roughly half an hour after our technicians arrive. You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer. It is worth looking at your insurance while we travel to you: misfuelling cover comes with plenty of policies.
