Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Barepot: Why It Occurs
If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the motor and your ignition off then call 0333 366 0103. Caught before the motor runs, it is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Barepot. If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it doesn't.
AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank
Many modern diesels on the roads around Barepot and North Side carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the engine. Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into the exhaust stream and cleans it.
There's a filler for every tank. Under one flap, side by side: that's the layout on many motors. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler is under the bonnet or in the boot instead. Diesel gets filled on every forecourt visit, week in, week out. Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes usually tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less regularly. The mistake lives in that gap.
How does AdBlue in your diesel tank take place around Barepot?
Carelessness seldom causes it. Instead is three things coming up together.
Haste comes from the warning. Your car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank sends it into limp mode — so the top-up happens quickly, before work on a drive off Meadow Edge, or heading home in the car park outside The Briery.
Unfamiliar motors are next, too. Rentals, new cars and company motors put their fillers in new places, and habit reaches for the cap used on the old one.
And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the pour once it has started. The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Barepot or out in Stainburn.
Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler
A couple of seconds is all these take — so check them before you tip anything, on a driveway in Workington or a forecourt in Barepot.
- The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually is not. Read it rather than going by position.
- On plenty of vehicles, size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.
- Open the filler flap and check for a label — many vehicles mark what belongs in each inlet right there.
- Cannot see it beside the diesel filler? Then look below the bonnet or inside the boot — the handbook will say which.
- Picking up a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park outside Workington? Check with whoever drove the car last before you set off, not once the light comes on.
AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank
Wherever across Cumbria the light comes on, here is a routine for the day.
- Stop somewhere level, motor off, with time in hand — not hurried on the side of Queen's Avenue.
- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it does the trick.
- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.
- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.
- Close the cap and check once more. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.
Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you've already poured into your diesel side. Leave out step five entirely.
Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Barepot?
Then the order of things is short. Don't start the motor. Do not switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump. Topping up with diesel won't weaken it: rather than mixing, AdBlue drops to the bottom of the tank, right where the fuel is drawn from.
Ask the attendants to help push the car away from the petrol pump if you are at a forecourt — the Esso, the BP or anywhere else. If you're on your own drive in Barepot, leave the vehicle where it is.
Already run? Stop once it is sensible, then switch off. On the Southwaite Services Northbound, under 50 miles from Barepot, that means the next junction. Distance counts — a short hop across Barepot is a smaller job than driving under 50 miles to Carlisle — so tell us roughly how far it went.
What occurs when our technicians turn up in Barepot
Wherever the vehicle came to rest, whether outside Seaton St. Paul's CofE Junior School, near Old Reservoir or at home, our van travels to it. What fluid went in, the quantity, and whether it ran: we ask because those replies set both work and quote. You get that price on the phone, before anybody sets off.
Then that tank is drained and the system flushed thoroughly. AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own — which is why the flush counts more here than with petrol. Testing comes at the end: before that, fresh diesel is added, and the filter is flushed or changed if necessary. Next our technicians fire it up and confirm it runs smoothly before we go.
Unrun cars mostly need a half-hour visit from the moment we arrive. The kit is fine on a busy forecourt, and quiet enough for a driveway late at night. Your insurer usually wants an engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and both are yours at the end. Payment comes on the day, with no deposit. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
