Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Barrow Bridge

If AdBlue has gone into the diesel tank, leave the engine off then keep the ignition off. Water with urea dissolved in it: that is AdBlue. It does not burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the damage it does begins when the system draws it in. If the engine has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually drained and thoroughly flushed where the car sits around Barrow Bridge. First, ring us on 0333 366 0103.

AdBlue in the diesel tank around Barrow Bridge: the first few minutes

To do:

  • Take your keys out, so no one switches your ignition on.
  • If you are anywhere near moving traffic, put the hazard lights on.
  • So you can tell us which liquid it was and roughly how much, keep the till receipt or the empty bottle.
  • Ring right where you are. Quote a BL1 5 postcode or the closest street name, and nobody has to hunt for you.

Never:

  • Shifting your car just a few yards is no reason to fire up your motor.
  • Don't switch the ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra diesel will not thin it.
  • Do not drive it anywhere, not even a short distance along Whalley Avenue.
  • Don't try to drain it yourself at the kerbside.

At a forecourt in Barrow Bridge, whether it's the Morrisons or another one, ask the staff to help you roll the car away from the petrol pump. If you are on your own drive, leave it just where it stands.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

The engine is not what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is. Kept in a dedicated tank, it's squirted into the exhaust to treat the fumes. Not one side suits the other: urea doesn't belong in a pump, and an injection pump can't deal with urea.

Inside a diesel tank it acts really differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in. The pickup takes fuel from the lowest part of the tank, and that is precisely where AdBlue settles: as it is denser than diesel, it sinks. The first thing the system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a car that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Smithills last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the easy case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of your tank, and nothing has drawn it in.

Two kinds of damage follow from there. What remains when the water evaporates is urea, which turns into crystals: they lodge in tiny passages and clog filters. Worse, it attacks some metals in the fuel system, and keeps going until it is flushed out. Lines carrying AdBlue mean harm overnight for a vehicle sitting in Barrow Bridge. Only inside your tank, it stays stable. And there's the water: it offers no protection to the components that rely on it the most — the injection pump and each injector.

AdBlue in a diesel: why it is frequently worse than petrol

Put petrol in a diesel at the Shell and you have a fault of thin fuel. Mixed into your diesel and left unused, it is harmless for now; using your engine does the harm.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different matter: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all. It can't simply be run through, since it doesn't burn. Crystals and corrosion remain after the next tankful, and AdBlue separates back from your diesel, and so thinning it won't work. Hence the flush counts more, and trying the engine "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than almost any other mistake — in Markland Hill or the centre of Barrow Bridge equally.

With AdBlue, the good news is no separate from petrol. Clearing a tank is the simplest part on a fuel system, and without start-up, the AdBlue remains in it — anywhere around Greater Manchester your vehicle has stopped.

Barrow Bridge: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

Many motors place the AdBlue filler beside the diesel one, occasionally under one flap, and in dim light the two can look the same. Nobody intends it. Mostly it takes place with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the forecourt.

Usually, it occurs in one of a couple of familiar ways. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up occurs in a hurry outside Johnson Fold Community Primary School. Someone tips the container in at home, right off Barrow Bridge Road, as the day ends. Or a driver new to that flap refills your vehicle after dark, stopped in the car park by The Tempest Arms.

The least known cars see it the most — rentals, brand-new ones, company ones, and the spare car in a home with both fuel types. An identical mistake, same first response — leave it switched off — anywhere you are in Barrow Bridge or the rest of Greater Manchester.

Started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank around Barrow Bridge?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer inside your tank. Your filter and pipework have had it pulled through, and some running time carries it on to the high-pressure pump and every injector.

Expect rough running, exhaust smoke, falling power, lights on the dash, or a cut-out — returning from Bolton Old Links Golf Course, say, or part way across Barrow Bridge. Stop when safe. Turn off. Leave the car off instead of restarting it to check. More of that is pulled through with each start.

If you were on the M61, under 3 miles from Barrow Bridge, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere safe rather than pressing on.

Every mile carries the AdBlue deeper in. That is why crossing Barrow Bridge to park near Barrow Bridge Mission and a drive of under 15 miles towards Salford are very separate jobs. Tell us roughly how far it had come.

Once the engine has been started, the flush includes more, and all of it is done where the car has come to a stop. Caught quickly, it very seldom leaves permanent damage.

Barrow Bridge: how AdBlue is cleared from a diesel

A street by St James The Great R C Church, a driveway, a layby or a forecourt: wherever the vehicle has come to rest around Barrow Bridge, our engineers come to it. The work depends on three replies, and our technicians get first — which fluid was put in, the quantity, and if the motor has turned over.

On the spot, the tank is then emptied, and both the polluted diesel and the urea come out as one. The fuel system is flushed thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own. After that, the filter: cleaned, or changed when it has to be. After that fresh diesel, then a test of the car. Engine not run? Then count on roughly half an hour on site for most jobs. The pumping gear is explosion-proof, and so a busy filling station is no issue, and it's quiet enough for a residential street after dark.

Fresh diesel goes in to prime the system, and that's the final step. Starting the car comes next, and then you head off from where the vehicle is parked, outside Lostock or on a driveway around Barrow Bridge. Before we leave, our technicians confirm it is running properly with clean diesel in. Since the job is done in full where the vehicle is, a garage never comes into it. You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report later on, which is what insurers ask for.

Barrow Bridge is a small village, and a call-out drain suits it: whether your car is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, we drain it where it sits, so it never needs to be moved to us.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Barrow Bridge?

There is no fair single price, because the jobs aren't the same. The price changes first with how long, if at all, your engine has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that went in. After that it turns on where your car is and whether a van can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight spot behind Hope Centre.

For that reason, each call from Barrow Bridge begins by asking the same trio — which fluid went in, what quantity, if it ran — ahead of a figure. When they are known, a range becomes a single firm figure.

Before anyone heads out, you hear the price on the phone. And you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing in advance. Misfuelling cover comes with plenty of insurance policies, so it pays to look at yours before the van gets there.
