Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Beacon Hill: Why It Happens

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? In that case set this page down for now, leave your ignition and engine off, then phone 0333 366 0103. Usually, if your motor hasn't run, it's drained and fully rinsed where the vehicle sits around Beacon Hill. If you're reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it does not.

Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

Many newer diesels in Balderton, like those in Beacon Hill, carry on two liquids; the engine takes only the diesel. AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has its own filler. Other vehicles keep the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; plenty more have the two together behind one flap. The diesel side is fuelled at the pump all the time. The AdBlue side is topped up far less regularly, usually from a bottle, and usually by someone who has to stop and think where it goes. It's in that gap that the error happens.

AdBlue in your diesel tank around Beacon Hill: how it takes place

It's rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

On a drive off Beacon Way before work, or in the car park at The Roaring Meg on the way home: that is where the hurried top-up happens. Why the rush? As AdBlue runs low the vehicle warns you, and once it's gone, limp mode follows.

Then the car is strange. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand hits for the cap it would have used on the old one.

A spout-topped bottle finds no resistance at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. So the pour, after started, keeps on. It takes seconds, be it in Newark-on-Trent or right in the centre of Beacon Hill.

Flushing a diesel fuel system after AdBlue, Beacon Hill

Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Be it a Beacon Hill forecourt or a driveway out in Winthorpe, take a couple of seconds on these before any is poured in.

  • Blue and lettering: an AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally does not. Trust the cap, not where it sits.
  • The size. On many cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.
  • A label inside the fuel flap often shows which fuel goes where, on many vehicles. Check for it.
  • The handbook says where it lives if your filler isn't next to your diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.
  • Collecting a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park at Newark Northgate? Ask the person who drove the vehicle last before you set off, rather than once the light goes on.

AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

For the day the light appears — anywhere you are around Nottinghamshire — a routine to follow.

  • Not in a rush on the side of Beacon Heights, not on a slope, not with the motor running: park and switch off first.
  • Locate the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and speak the name "AdBlue" aloud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft. It does the trick.
  • The diesel cap remains on. Where both sit under a flap, make sure it is closed before the bottle comes up.
  • Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.
  • Only then, start your car: close the cap, check again, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you've already poured into the diesel side. Step five is out.

Put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Beacon Hill already?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start your engine. On many diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so don't switch the car on. Diluting it with more diesel fails, since AdBlue sinks to the base instead of blending — and that is where your fuel is sucked from.

The staff at Esso, Asda or another forecourt will normally help to push the vehicle clear if you ask. If you are on your own drive around Beacon Hill, leave the vehicle where it sits.

Already started? Pull over once it is sensible, then turn off. Come off the M1 — under 25 miles out of Beacon Hill — at the first junction. Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Lincoln, under 15 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Beacon Hill.

When our technicians turn up around Beacon Hill, what occurs?

Our engineers come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Barnby Road Academy Primary and Nursery school, close to Beacon Hill Free Christian Fellowship or on your own drive. Our technicians ask what went in, roughly how much, and if it has run, since those answers decide the work and our quote. Nobody heads out before you have had our quote over the phone.

After that: a drain, then a full flush of the entire system. Unlike petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and neither washes away unaided. Hence it counts more. After the filter has been flushed — or renewed, where needed — clean diesel goes in, and finally your car gets tested. We do not go until it has been fired up and is running properly.

Using pumps fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which your engine has not run need about half an hour after we arrive. You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer. Before we get there, take a look at your insurance documents; many carry cover for misfuelling.
