Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

Plenty of current diesels on the roads about Beaconhill Grange and Beaconhill Lea carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the engine. AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Every tank has a filler of its own. Plenty of cars share a single flap for both, while some move the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet. Diesel goes in at each filling station call-out, week in, week out. Much less frequently, the AdBlue side gets topped up — normally from a bottle, by someone thinking about where it goes. That gap is where the mistake lives.

Beaconhill Grange: how AdBlue in your diesel tank happens

Rarely is it carelessness: normally three things coincide.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the car drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Lytham Close before work, or in the car park at Nelson Cramlington Miner's Welfare Club Scheme LTD on the way home.

The old car's cap is where the hand reaches — yet a hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers elsewhere. That is a second thing: a strange car.

A spouted bottle finds no resistance at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, once started, carries on. It's seconds, whether in Beaconhill Green or bang in the centre of Beaconhill Grange.

Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Look at these before pouring, on a forecourt in Beaconhill Grange or a driveway out in Town Centre. Seconds, that's all.

  • Colour and lettering: an AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually does not. Trust the cap, not its position.
  • On many cars, the size gives it away: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.
  • The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Plenty of vehicles say there which fuel goes where.
  • The handbook shows where it lives when the filler is not next to your diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.
  • Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Cramlington.

AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

On the day the light comes on — wherever you are around Northumberland — a simple routine to follow.

  • Not in a rush on the side of Stratford Close, not on a slope, not with the engine running: park and switch off first.
  • Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it does the trick.
  • Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.
  • Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.
  • Only after that, start the car: close the cap, check again, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Spot at step two or three that it has already gone into your diesel side? Then stop just there. Don't go on to stage five.

Beaconhill Grange: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start your motor. Don't switch the ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump. Diluting it with extra diesel fails, since AdBlue sinks to the bottom rather than blending — and that's where the fuel is pulled from.

If you are at a forecourt, whether it is the Magpie Service Station or the Sainsbury's, ask the attendants to help push the car away from the petrol pump. On your own drive around Beaconhill Grange? Then the car stays where it is.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if the engine has already run. Leave the A167(M) — under 10 miles out of Beaconhill Grange — at the next junction. Mileage counts — a short hop across Beaconhill Grange makes a smaller job than heading under 10 miles to Newcastle upon Tyne — so tell us about how far it went.

What occurs when we turn up in Beaconhill Grange

By Beaconhill Community Primary School, close to Beaconhill Community Centre or on your own drive: wherever the car has stopped, our technicians come to it. The answers settle this work and our price, so our engineers ask what got in, about how much, and if it's run. You hear that price on the phone, before anybody heads out.

Emptying that tank comes next, then a thorough flush of your system. AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own — which is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol. Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested. Next our technicians fire it up and make sure it runs properly before we go.

Unstarted cars usually need a half-hour job from the moment we arrive. The kit is safe on a busy filling station, and quiet enough for a residential street after dark. No money in advance; you settle up that day. Afterwards, a VAT invoice and the report from the engineer are handed to you for your insurer. Before we get there, have a look at your policy; plenty include cover for misfuelling.
