AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Beckermet? Don't Start It
If AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank, keep your engine off and keep the ignition off. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water. The harm begins once it is sucked through the lines — it won't burn, and it will not blend with diesel. A drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Beckermet, is usually all AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it's caught before your motor has run. Ring 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.
Beckermet, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do right away
To do:
- Take your keys out, and so nobody switches your ignition on.
- Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere near.
- So you can give us which fluid it was and roughly how much, keep the till receipt or the empty bottle.
- Call just where you are. Say a CA21 2 postcode or the nearest street sign, and nobody has to search for you.
Do not:
- Not even for a second, and not to shift the vehicle: the engine remains off.
- Many diesels run their pump the instant your ignition comes on, so leave the car off.
- AdBlue does not mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra diesel will not weaken it.
- Any driving at all is to be avoided, even a short distance up The Millfields.
- Do not try to drain the car yourself at the kerbside.
At a forecourt in Beckermet, whether it is the Mill Garage or another one, ask the staff to help you roll the vehicle clear of the pump. On your own drive, don't move it at all.
AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does
The engine is not what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to clean it. Nothing in it is meant to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is built to handle it.
Inside a diesel tank it behaves very differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in. Heavier than diesel, it sinks and pools below it — the same spot the pickup draws from. A motor filled on a drive in Yottenfews yesterday evening and left unstarted counts as the simple case. Nothing has pulled the AdBlue up yet — but once the motor runs, that is what goes first, directly from the bottom of that tank.
Once it is drawn in, the damage comes in two forms. It attacks some metals used in fuel components, working on any part it touches until it is removed from the system. And when the water goes, the urea forms crystals that clog filters and settle in narrow passages. Overnight, a car sitting around Beckermet with AdBlue in its lines gets worse; if it's only inside your tank, it doesn't. Then there is the water: it offers no lubrication to the parts that rely on it the most — the high-pressure pump and each injector.
Why AdBlue in a diesel is commonly more serious than petrol
A fault of thin fuel is what you end up with after fuelling a diesel with petrol at the BP. It mixes with the diesel, and while it is inside the tank it causes no harm; the damage comes from running your motor on it.
The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a totally unsuitable liquid. Since it does not burn, running it through isn't an option. Nor can it be thinned, since it separates back out — and the following fill won't rinse away crystals or corrosion. So the flush matters for more with AdBlue, and trying your engine "to see", in the heart of Beckermet or out in Thornhill, costs more than nearly any other error.
As with petrol, there is good news. If the engine hasn't run, the AdBlue is still inside the tank, and your tank is the quickest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever around Cumbria the car is standing.
How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Beckermet?
After dark, two caps side by side — the AdBlue one and the diesel cap, occasionally under a single flap — can appear the same. No one means it; plenty of designs allow it. Most of the time it takes place with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the forecourt.
A few familiar ways account for the majority of them. Rushing, outside Beckermet CofE School, after a warning light flashed on during the school run, someone tops up your car. Someone pours the bottle in outside their house, right off Hunter Rise, as the day ends. Otherwise, in dim light outside The White Mare, your car is refilled by a driver opening that flap the first time.
The least familiar vehicles get it the most — rentals, new ones, fleet ones, and the other motor in a home with both fuels. Wherever across Cumbria, Beckermet as well, the mistake doesn't change, and nor does the first response: keep it off.
Already started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank around Beckermet?
Then the tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. It has been sucked through the fuel filter and your lines, and if your engine ran for any time, it has reached the high-pressure pump and the injectors.
Watch for lumpy running, smoke, lost power, lights on your dash, or a cut-out — returning from Thornhill Football Club, perhaps, or midway across Beckermet. Pull over when it is safe. Turn off. Leave it off rather than restarting it to check. More of that is pulled through with each start.
If you were on the M6, under 50 miles from Beckermet, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere safe instead of pressing on.
How far it went counts. A couple of hundred yards across Beckermet to the car park by St John's is a very different job from a run towards Carlisle, under 50 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with each mile. Let us know about how far it had come.
There is more to clean out once your engine has run, and we do all of it where the vehicle has stopped. Lasting damage is very uncommon when it is caught quickly.
Beckermet: how AdBlue is cleared from a diesel
The vehicle stays put, whether that's a road beside Cross Fragments, a driveway, a lay-by or a filling station in Beckermet, and the van travels to it. The job depends on three answers, and our engineers ask for first — what was put in, the quantity, and if your motor has run.
On the spot, your tank is then drained, and all of the polluted diesel and the urea come out as one. A full flush matters far more after AdBlue than after petrol, since what remains won't wash out by itself. The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested. If the engine has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once our engineers arrive. The pumps are explosion-proof, safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.
Bleeding your system with new diesel comes at the end. Firing it up comes next, and then you set off from where the vehicle is parked, by Braystones or on a driveway in Beckermet. The check before our technicians go is that it runs smoothly on clean diesel. The entire job is done where the vehicle is, so it never has to be taken to a garage. Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come at the end.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Beckermet: the cost of fixing it
Since the jobs vary, a single price would not be honest. Three things change the cost: whether the engine has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue got in, and where the car is. That last one rests on whether our van can reach it safely, and an open drive is simpler than a tight space behind Viking and Saxon Crosses.
Before any figure, never after, each enquiry from Beckermet begins with the same three checks: the liquid, the amount, and whether the engine ran. Given them, the range narrows to one fixed number.
Before a van sets off, you hear the price on the phone. And you pay on the day, card or over the phone, with nothing upfront. Check your insurance whilst we're on the way: plenty carry misfuelling cover.
