Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Beckingham

AdBlue in the diesel tank? Then keep your engine off — and your ignition too. Urea mixed in water is all AdBlue is. The trouble starts once it's pulled through the lines — it won't ignite, and it will not blend with diesel. If your engine has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally emptied and thoroughly flushed where the vehicle stands in Beckingham. Phone 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

AdBlue in your diesel tank in Beckingham: the first few minutes

To do:

  • Keys out — then no one can power anything on.
  • Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere near.
  • Which fluid, and roughly what amount? Save the bottle or your receipt, and we can know.
  • The van locates you fastest with a postcode starting DN10 4, or just the name of a street nearby, and so phone from the spot.

Things not to do:

  • Not even briefly, and not to roll the car: the engine stays off.
  • The ignition stays off: on many diesels, switching it on is enough to run your pump.
  • AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding more diesel won't thin it.
  • Any driving at all is best avoided, even a short stretch down High Street.
  • Don't try to drain the car yourself at the kerbside.

Rolling your vehicle off the pumps is a job for staff to help with, whichever Beckingham forecourt you are on, the JET included. If you are on your own drive, leave it precisely where it sits.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

Not the motor but the exhaust is where AdBlue belongs. From a dedicated tank it is fed straight to your exhaust, cleaning what your engine emits. A fuel pump isn't designed to cope with it, and AdBlue was never supposed to travel through one.

It does not combine. After it's poured into the tank, AdBlue behaves not at all like diesel. Heavier than diesel, it drops and pools underneath it — the very place the intake sucks from. Simplest of all: one that got AdBlue in Bole last night and has not been started since. The liquid sits at the foot of the tank, untouched — but it would be first through once your engine runs, before any diesel at all.

After it's sucked in, the damage comes in two forms. What is left once the water evaporates is urea, which forms crystals: they settle in narrow passages and block filters. On top of that, it attacks certain metals in the fuel system, and carries on until it's flushed out. A car left standing in Beckingham with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank is not. Water lubricates nothing. The injection pump and every injector need diesel flowing past them, and so the water part harms them in its own right.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Beckingham

Why AdBlue in a diesel is regularly more major than petrol

Petrol put into a diesel on Tesco's forecourt makes your fuel watery — that's the whole problem. It mixes with the diesel, and while it's in the tank it does no harm; the damage comes from running the motor on it.

The issue with AdBlue in a diesel is a totally unsuitable liquid. It can't just be run through, because it doesn't burn. Nor can it be watered down, since it separates again — and the next tankful won't rinse away deposits or corrosion. So the flush matters more here, and turning the key "to see", in the centre of Beckingham or out in Morton, costs more than nearly any other error.

The same good news applies as with petrol. Not started? Then the AdBlue sits just in that tank, the simplest section of the whole system to clear, anywhere your vehicle has come to rest around Nottinghamshire.

Beckingham: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

In dim light, two caps together — the AdBlue cap and the diesel cap, now and then behind a single flap — can appear the same. No one means it; plenty of layouts allow it. A bottle bought when heading home and poured in at home, rather than at the filling station, is the usual story.

A few familiar ways account for most cases. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up takes place in a hurry outside Beckingham Primary School. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off The Meadows. Or a driver new to that flap tops up your car in dim light, stopped in the car park by the pub in the village.

The least known cars get it most — hire cars, new ones, company ones, and the spare car in a family with one of each fuels. Wherever around Nottinghamshire, Beckingham included, the slip does not change, and neither does the first step: keep it switched off.

Beckingham: started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer inside the tank. It's been drawn through the filter and the fuel lines, and if the motor ran for any time, it has reached the high-pressure pump and the injectors.

Watch for lumpy running, smoke, falling power, warnings on your dash, or a cut-out — coming back from The Green / The Spinney, say, or midway across Beckingham. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and don't restart it to check. With each start, more of that is pulled through.

Leave the Doncaster By-Pass, under 10 miles from Beckingham, by the next junction and stop safely, not carrying on.

A quick hop across Beckingham to the car park by Beckingham cum Saundby Parish Council Recreation Room is one matter; driving towards Doncaster, under 25 miles away, is something else, because each mile carries the AdBlue further in. So mileage counts. About how far it had come is worth telling us.

Our engineers do all of the cleaning where the vehicle has ended up, and once the motor has been started there is more of it. If it is noticed quickly, long-term damage is very rare.

What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve around Beckingham?

Our engineers come to the car, wherever it has stopped in Beckingham: a side street near All Saints, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. The work depends on three answers, which we get before all else — which fluid went in, the quantity, and if your motor has turned over.

Then the tank is drained where the car stands, so the tainted fuel and the AdBlue come out together. A careful flush matters far more with AdBlue than with petrol, because residue will not wash out by itself. After that, the fuel filter: cleaned, or changed if it has to be. Then fresh diesel, then a check of the car. Not run? In that case expect roughly half an hour on site for most jobs. Our pumping gear is explosion-proof, so a busy forecourt is no problem, and it's quiet enough for a residential street late at night.

Lastly, the system is bled with fresh diesel. Whether it is a parking space by Gainsborough Central or a drive in Beckingham, that is where we fire it up and you drive off. Our technicians make sure it runs correctly on clean diesel before leaving. Since the job is done in its entirety where the car is, a garage never comes into it. At the end, there is the paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice and a written report from the engineer.

Beckingham: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Not one single figure would be fair, since each job is different. The cost moves first with how long, if at all, the engine has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that got in. After that it rests on where your car is and whether our van can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight space behind Beckingham Village Hall.

For that reason, each call from Beckingham begins by asking the identical trio — which fluid went in, what quantity, if it ran — ahead of a quote. The answers turn a range into a straight quote.

Before anyone sets off, you are told our quote by phone. Then payment is on the day, card or over the phone, with nothing in advance. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.

Then the most helpful thing you can do is nothing to the vehicle. Motor off, keys out, ignition off. Phone 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, roughly how much, and whether the engine ran is everything our technicians need. Petrol in Diesel takes over the rest throughout Nottinghamshire, Beckingham too.
