AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Bedmond? Don't Start It

If AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank, leave your engine off then leave your ignition off. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water. Not like fuel, it neither burns nor mixes, and nothing starts till your motor sucks it through. If your engine hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally drained and carefully purged where the car sits around Bedmond. Phone 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

What to do straight away, Bedmond: AdBlue in the diesel tank

Do these:

  • So no one can switch your ignition on, pull your keys away.
  • If you are at all close to moving traffic, put your hazards on.
  • The empty bottle or the till receipt shows us the fluid and the quantity, and so don't throw it out.
  • Call us from where you are. A postcode starting WD5 0, or the name of the closest street, gets our van to you without a search.

Things not to do:

  • Shifting your vehicle just a short way is no reason to fire up your motor.
  • Don't switch the ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • No more fuel added. The AdBlue won't mix, so it's wasted.
  • Never drive it anywhere, not even a short stretch down High Street.
  • Beside the road, don't attempt draining it on your own.

Moving your car away from the island is a job for attendants to help with, whichever Bedmond forecourt you're on, the Primrose Hill Service Station included. Stopped on your own driveway? Then it remains just where it is.

What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not the engine. Stored in a dedicated tank, it's squirted into the exhaust stream to treat the fumes. A fuel pump isn't made to cope with it, and AdBlue was never supposed to go through one.

Tipped in with the diesel, it stays apart rather than mixing — quite different from fuel. It drops, since it is denser than diesel, and settles low where the intake takes its fuel from. A car filled on a driveway in Waterdale overnight and not started since is the simple one. Nothing has sucked the AdBlue up yet — but once your motor runs, that is what is pulled first, directly from the bottom of your tank.

Two kinds of damage follow from there. It attacks some metals used in fuel components, working on any part it reaches until it's cleared from your system. And when the water evaporates, the urea forms crystals that block filters and lodge in narrow channels. By daybreak, a vehicle sitting around Bedmond with AdBlue in its lines grows worse; where it's only inside the tank, it doesn't. Diesel protects the high-pressure pump and each injector as it passes; water offers none of that, which is a second form of damage.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Bedmond

Why is AdBlue in a diesel often the bigger issue?

An issue of thin fuel is what you get from filling a diesel with petrol at the Harvest energy. No damage is done while it sits unused, mixed into your diesel — only once your motor runs on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is an issue of the wrong substance altogether. It does not burn, so it cannot just be run through. It doesn't stay mixed, so it cannot be weakened. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your engine "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether your car is in Appspond or the middle of Bedmond.

With AdBlue, the good news is no different from petrol. Clearing a tank is the easiest job on a fuel system, and with no running, the AdBlue remains in it — anywhere across Hertfordshire your car has stopped.

Bedmond: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on plenty of cars rests right next to the diesel filler, sometimes under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light. It mostly happens outside the house, from a bottle bought on the journey home, rather than at the forecourt.

Mostly, it takes place in one of a few familiar ways. Rushing, outside Bedmond Academy, after a warning light came on during the school run, someone tops up the vehicle. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Millhouse Lane. Or the car is topped up in the car park at White Hart Inn, in poor light, by somebody who has never opened that flap before.

Rented cars, brand-new cars, company motors, or the second vehicle in a family with both fuels: the least known vehicles get it most. Wherever across Hertfordshire, Bedmond as well, the mistake doesn't change, and nor does the first step: leave it switched off.

Started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank in Bedmond?

Then that tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. Given any running time, it travels to the injection pump and every injector, after passing via the fuel filter and lines.

Perhaps coming back from Piecorner Wood, or midway across Bedmond, your motor might run lumpy, smoke, lose power, light up your dash or stall. Once safe, pull over then turn everything off — with no restarting to test. With each start, more of that is pulled through.

Bedmond lies under a mile from the M25; if you were on it, exit at the first junction and stop somewhere safe rather than carrying on.

Each mile carries the AdBlue deeper into your system. That's why a hop across Bedmond to park beside The Church of Ascension and a drive of under 5 miles towards St Albans are such different jobs. Tell us about how far it had come.

Wherever the car came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to rinse out once the motor has been run. Permanent damage is very unusual when it's noticed early.

What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Bedmond?

The vehicle stays where it is, whether that is a street beside Abbots Langley Library, a drive, a layby or a filling station around Bedmond, and the van travels to it. Which fluid was put in, roughly how much, plus whether your motor has turned over: our engineers check first, because those shape the job.

Then that tank is cleared where the car waits, and so the polluted fuel and the AdBlue come out together. What remains from AdBlue will not flush away by itself, so the fuel system gets a full flush, which matters much more here than for petrol. A test of your vehicle comes last, once fresh diesel is added and the fuel filter gets cleaned or, where necessary, swapped. If your engine has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once we arrive. Explosion-proof pumps make a busy forecourt safe to work on, and they run quiet enough to spare the street at night.

Clean diesel goes in to prime your system, and that's the final step. Starting it comes next, and then you drive off from where the car is parked, by Kings Langley or on a drive in Bedmond. Before leaving, our technicians make sure it's running properly with fresh diesel in. The entire job is done where the car is, so it never has to be taken to a workshop. You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report later on, which is what insurers want.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Bedmond

There's no honest single quote, because the jobs are not the same. The cost changes first with how long, if at all, the engine has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that was put in. After that it turns on where the vehicle is and whether a van can reach it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight space behind St. Saviour's Church.

Before any figure, never afterwards, each call from Bedmond begins with the same three questions: the liquid, the amount, plus whether the engine ran. When they are known, a range turns into one firm number.

Quoted by phone before the van sets out, the job is settled on the day — card or phone, no deposit. As the van is on the way, check your insurance: plenty include misfuelling.
