AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Belgrano? Keep It Switched Off

If AdBlue has got into your diesel tank, keep your engine off then keep your ignition off. Urea mixed in water is all AdBlue is. It does not burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the damage it does begins when the fuel system pulls it in. Caught before the engine has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Belgrano. Phone 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

Belgrano, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do at once

To do:

  • So nobody can turn the ignition on, take the keys away.
  • If you're at all near moving traffic, put the hazards on.
  • Which product, and about how much quantity? Hang on to the bottle or the receipt, and our technicians will see.
  • Call right where you are. Say a LL22 9 postcode or the nearest street sign, and nobody has to search for you.

Don't:

  • Not even for a second, and not to roll your vehicle: the motor remains off.
  • The ignition remains off: on lots of diesels, switching it on is enough to start your pump.
  • Do not top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue does not dilute in diesel; it separates out.
  • Even a short distance up Rhos Fawr is too far to drive the vehicle.
  • Emptying that tank on your own beside the road isn't worth trying.

The attendants on duty at any Belgrano filling station — the Shell among them — will normally help rolling it clear if you ask. If you are on your own drive, leave it precisely where it stands.

AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Not the motor but your exhaust is where AdBlue belongs. Stored in a separate tank, it is injected into the exhaust to treat the gases. Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is designed to handle it.

Poured in with your diesel, it keeps apart rather than mixing — entirely different from fuel. The intake takes fuel from the deepest part of that tank, and that's just where AdBlue ends up: being denser than diesel, it sinks. When the pump runs, the AdBlue is top of the list to be pulled through. Before then it sits underneath your diesel, and that is why a car topped up in Kinmel Bay yesterday and never switched on remains the straightforward one, as long as nobody turns your key.

From there it causes two kinds of harm. As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps labouring on the components it reaches for as long as it stays there. Overnight, a car parked in Belgrano with AdBlue through its pipework grows worse; where it is just in your tank, it doesn't. The water in it causes damage of its own: the high-pressure fuel pump and your injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Belgrano

Why AdBlue in a diesel is frequently more serious than petrol

Put petrol in a diesel at the Asda and you have an issue of thin fuel. Blended into your diesel and sitting unused, it's harmless at that stage; using your engine does the harm.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely wrong liquid. It cannot just be run through, because it doesn't burn. Whether the vehicle is in St George or the centre of Belgrano, firing it up "to see" costs more in this case than nearly any other slip, and the flush matters more. The reasons: it will not stay blended, and so diluting it fails; and deposits and corrosion survive the following tankful.

The good news is the same as with petrol. Wherever across Conwy your car has stopped, an unrun engine means the AdBlue still in the tank: the simplest bit of any fuel system to clear.

How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Belgrano?

Plenty of cars put the AdBlue cap beside the diesel one, occasionally under a single flap, and after dark the two can look the same. No one means it. It usually occurs at home, from a container bought en route home, not at the filling station.

It tends to happen in a couple of familiar ways. Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside the local primary school the refill is rushed. Someone pours the container in outside their house, just off Rhodfa Cregyn, as the day ends. Or someone new to that flap tops up the vehicle after dark, parked in the car park by The Yacht.

It comes up the most in a hire car, a brand-new car, a company motor, or the other vehicle in a home with both fuel types — the cars drivers know the least. Anywhere around Conwy, Belgrano as well, the slip does not change, and nor does the first response: keep it switched off.

Belgrano: started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer inside your tank. It has been drawn through the filter and the fuel lines, and if the engine ran for any time, it has reached the high-pressure pump and the injectors.

Watch for lumpy running, smoke, lost power, warnings on your dash, or a stall — returning from Pentre Mawr, perhaps, or midway across Belgrano. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart the vehicle to check. More of it is pulled through with each start.

Exit the Moreton Spur, under 25 miles from Belgrano, at the first junction and stop safely, rather than carrying on.

How far it went counts. A few hundred yards across Belgrano to the car park by Canolfan Dewi Sant Centre is a very different job from a run towards St Asaph, under 10 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the fuel system with each mile. Let us know roughly how far it had come.

Wherever the vehicle came to a stop is where all of it gets done, even with more to clean out after the motor has been run. If it is spotted quickly, permanent damage is very unusual.

Belgrano: how AdBlue is cleared from a diesel

We come to the car, wherever it has stopped around Belgrano: a side street close to Otter, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. Three replies shape the work, and so first our engineers ask which fluid was put in, about what quantity, plus if the motor has turned over.

Right there, your tank is then drained, and all of the polluted diesel and the urea leave as one. With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, the flush matters: the whole system is cleaned right through because what remains will not wash out unaided. Next, the fuel filter: cleaned, or replaced when it has to be. Then clean diesel, then a test of your vehicle. About half an hour on site is typical for most jobs when the motor hasn't run. Quiet enough for use outside a house at night, and safe on a busy forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

Last, the fuel system is bled with new diesel. Whether it is a parking space outside Abergele & Pensarn or a driveway in Belgrano, that is where our engineers start the car and you set off. It's tested on clean diesel to make sure it runs smoothly before our technicians head off. As the job is done in its entirety where your car is, a workshop never comes into it. You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report afterwards, which is what insurers want.

Belgrano: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Because each jobs differ, a flat price wouldn't be honest. What changes the cost is, firstly, whether the engine has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue went in; and then where your car is and whether our van can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight gap behind Wolf.

Ahead of a figure, never afterwards, every enquiry from Belgrano opens with the same three questions: the liquid, the quantity, and whether the engine ran. When those are answered, a range becomes a single fixed figure.

Quoted by phone before the van sets out, the job is settled that day — card or phone, no deposit. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
