AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Bellaghy? Don't Start It

Engine off, ignition off: that is how you begin if AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank. In plain terms, AdBlue is simply urea in water. Being water-based, it will not ignite and never combines with diesel; damage only comes when your pump begins pulling it. Caught before your motor has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Bellaghy. Nothing comes before ringing 0333 366 0103.

Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank in Bellaghy

Do:

  • Remove the keys, which stops someone switching the power on.
  • Close to moving traffic? So put your hazards on.
  • Hold on to the till receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what went in and roughly how much.
  • Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting BT45 8, or the name of the closest street, gets our van to you without a search.

Not to do:

  • No starting the engine — not briefly, not to shift the vehicle.
  • Many diesels run their fuel pump the instant your ignition goes on, and so leave it off.
  • Adding more diesel does not help: AdBlue settles out instead of blending.
  • Leave it where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short way down Wallace Cottages.
  • Emptying the tank on your own by the road isn't one to try.

Moving the vehicle off the pumps is a job for attendants to help with, wherever Bellaghy forecourt you are on, the the nearest petrol station or any other. Stopped on your own driveway? Then it stays just as it is.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

Made for the exhaust, AdBlue has no place in the motor. Its own reservoir keeps it, and from there it's sprayed into your exhaust, and there it treats the gas. Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is made to handle it.

Inside a diesel tank it acts really differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in. The intake takes fuel from the deepest part of that tank, and that's precisely where AdBlue ends up: being heavier than diesel, it sinks. Easiest of all: one that had AdBlue in Knockcloghrim overnight and has not turned since. The liquid sits at the foot of the tank, untouched — though it will be first through if your motor runs, before any diesel at all.

From there it does two kinds of damage. As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps labouring on the parts it hits for as long as it stays there. Lines holding AdBlue mean harm by morning for a car sitting around Bellaghy. Only inside that tank, it stays stable. Water protects nothing. The high-pressure pump and every injector depend on diesel flowing past them, so the water content damages them in its own right.

AdBlue in a diesel: why it's commonly worse than petrol

Petrol pumped into a diesel on another forecourt nearby's forecourt makes your fuel watery — that's the whole problem. It mixes with your diesel, and whilst it is inside that tank it causes no damage; the harm comes from running the motor on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid as such is plainly the wrong one. It doesn't burn, so it cannot simply be run through. Crystals and corrosion remain after the next fill, and AdBlue separates again from your diesel, and so watering it can't work. Hence the flush counts so much, and turning your key "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than almost any other slip — in Curran or the centre of Bellaghy alike.

As with petrol, there's good news. Never run? Then the AdBlue waits just in that tank, the easiest section of the entire system to clear, anywhere your vehicle has stopped in County Londonderry.

Bellaghy: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

Plenty of vehicles put the AdBlue filler beside the diesel cap, occasionally under one flap, and in dim light the two may look the same. Nobody means it. Usually it is not the filling station: a driver picks up a bottle heading home and tips it in outside the house.

Usually, it happens in one of a couple of familiar ways. The refill is hurried outside the local primary school, after your dash lit up with a warning as the kids were taken in. Close to B842, someone tips a container in at home in the evening. Or the car is topped up in the car park outside the pub in the village, in poor light, by somebody who has never opened that flap before.

The least familiar cars get it most — rentals, new ones, company ones, and the other motor of a home with both fuels. An identical slip, an identical first step — keep it off — anywhere you happen to be around Bellaghy or the remainder of County Londonderry.

Already started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Bellaghy?

Then the AdBlue has left that tank. Via the filter, along the pipework, and — given any running time — into the high-pressure pump and each injector: that is where it travels.

Perhaps coming back from the green space at the edge of the village, or part way across Bellaghy, the engine might go lumpy, smoke, lose pace, flash your dash or stall. No restarting to test: stop when safe, then switch everything off. Each start pulls more of it through.

On the M77, over 50 miles from Bellaghy, the first junction is where to exit, and anywhere sensible is where to stop — not driving on.

Distance matters: every mile carries the AdBlue deeper in, so driving towards Belfast, under 50 miles away, makes a much larger job than hopping across Bellaghy to the car park by the centre. Tell us roughly how far it had come.

Wherever your car came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to clean out once the engine has been started. Very seldom does it leave lasting damage if it's caught soon.

Draining AdBlue in a diesel around Bellaghy: what it takes

We come to your car, wherever it has stopped around Bellaghy: a side street near a street just off the centre, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. Three answers decide the work, and so first we ask which fluid was put in, roughly the amount, and if the motor has run.

The contaminated diesel and the urea leave as one when the tank is emptied, on the spot. Your system is flushed thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own. After that, the filter: flushed, or changed if it must be. After that clean diesel, and then a check of your vehicle. Most of these jobs are a half-hour visit once our technicians arrive, if the motor has not run. The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

New diesel goes in to prime the system, and that's the last step. Then we fire it up and you head off, whether from a parking space by the nearest station or a drive around Bellaghy. Before we leave, our technicians make sure it's running smoothly with fresh diesel in. The entire job is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to go to a workshop. At the end, there is the paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice plus a report from the engineer.
