Belle Vue: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

If AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank, keep your motor off and leave your ignition off. Water with urea dissolved in it: that is AdBlue. Not like fuel, it neither ignites nor blends, and nothing starts until your motor pulls it through. Caught before the motor has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Belle Vue. First, call us on 0333 366 0103.

Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank around Belle Vue

Do these:

  • Pull your keys out, so no one switches your ignition on.
  • Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all close.
  • So you can give us which liquid it was and about what quantity, keep the till receipt or the empty bottle.
  • The van finds you fastest with a postcode starting M12 5, or just the name of a street nearby, and so phone from the spot.

Not to do:

  • Do not start your motor, even for a moment to move the car.
  • Turning the key to ignition alone starts your pump going on many diesels. Avoid it.
  • Pouring in more diesel does not work: AdBlue separates out rather than blending.
  • Any driving at all is to be avoided, including a short stretch up Scarcroft Road.
  • By the road, don't try draining it on your own.

The staff working at any Belle Vue filling station — the Esso included — will usually help pushing it aside if you ask. At your own driveway, don't move it at all.

What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

Not your engine but the exhaust is where AdBlue is meant to go. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to clean it. Nothing inside a fuel pump is made for this liquid — and no part of it was intended to travel through one.

It doesn't blend. After it's poured into a tank of diesel, AdBlue behaves nothing like diesel. It sinks, because it is denser than diesel, and pools down where the intake draws its supply from. The first thing the system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a vehicle that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Rusholme last night, and has not been started since, is still the straightforward case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of that tank, and nothing has pulled it in.

It does two kinds of damage from there. What remains once the water evaporates is urea, which turns into crystals: they settle in narrow passages and clog filters. On top of that, it eats at some metals in a fuel system, and carries on until it is cleared out. Pipes holding AdBlue spell damage overnight for a car sitting in Belle Vue. Only inside that tank, it stays the same. Water protects nothing. The injection pump and each injector need diesel running past them, and so the water part harms them by itself.

Why AdBlue in a diesel is commonly more significant than petrol

Fill a diesel with petrol by mistake at the TotalEnergies, and the problem is diluted fuel. No damage is done as long as it sits put, mixed into the diesel — only when the engine runs on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid as such is simply the wrong one. Since it doesn't burn, running it through is not an option. Deposits and corrosion stay through the next tankful, and AdBlue separates again from your diesel, and so thinning it won't help. That is why the flush counts so much, and turning the key "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than nearly any other slip — in Openshaw or the heart of Belle Vue alike.

As with petrol, there's good news. If your motor hasn't run, the AdBlue is still in the tank, and that tank is the easiest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever around Greater Manchester your car is standing.

How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank in Belle Vue?

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many cars waits right next to the diesel filler, occasionally under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light. Mostly it occurs with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the pump.

It tends to occur in a couple of familiar ways. Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside All Saints Primary School the refill is hurried. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Ellen Wilkinson Crescent. Or a driver unfamiliar with that flap tops up your vehicle after dark, parked in the car park by Steelworks Tavern.

Hired cars, new cars, fleet vehicles, or the spare car in a family with one of each: the least known cars get it most. Anywhere around Greater Manchester, Belle Vue included, the slip doesn't change, and neither does the first response: leave it switched off.

Started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank in Belle Vue?

Then the tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. Through the fuel filter, through the pipework, and — with any running time — on to the high-pressure pump and every injector: that is how far it has gone.

Maybe coming back from Gorton Park, or part way across Belle Vue, your engine may go rough, smoke, drop power, light up your dash or cut out. Stop when it is safe. Switch off. Keep it off instead of restarting it to check. More of that is pulled through with each start.

Leave the Mancunian Way, under 3 miles from Belle Vue, at the next junction and stop safely, not carrying on.

Distance matters: each mile carries the AdBlue further into your system, so heading for Manchester, under 3 miles away, makes a much larger job than crossing Belle Vue to the car park by National Speedway Stadium. Let us know roughly how far it had come.

Once your engine has been started, the flush takes in more, and all of it is done where the vehicle has stopped. Spotted early, it very seldom leaves lasting damage.

Belle Vue: how AdBlue is cleared from a diesel

The car stays put, whether that's a street beside National Basketball Performance Centre, a drive, a layby or a filling station in Belle Vue, and our van comes to it. Before anything else our engineers ask what got in, about how much, and whether your motor has run, because those replies decide this work.

Next, emptying your tank on the spot removes the polluted diesel along with the AdBlue together. Residue from AdBlue won't flush out unaided, and so the whole system gets a careful flush, which matters much more here than with petrol. Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested. Most of these jobs are a half-hour job once our engineers turn up, provided the engine has not run. Explosion-proof pumps make a busy forecourt sensible to work on, and they run quiet enough not to disturb the neighbours at night.

The last step is to bleed the fuel system on clean diesel. After that our technicians fire it up and you set off, whether from a parking bay by the nearest station or a drive around Belle Vue. We make sure it runs smoothly on clean diesel before we leave. Our engineers do it all wherever your car has ended up, and it never needs to go to a garage. The insurer is likely to want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — both yours afterwards.

AdBlue drains across Belle Vue and Greater Manchester

Gorton, West Gorton and Longsight are among the towns around Belle Vue that the same vans reach, together with most of Greater Manchester beyond, over the M postcode area. If you're close to a border, or somewhere hard to describe, ring and ask rather than guessing.

A mobile service fits Belle Vue, a residential suburb: there's no need to take the car to us, since we drain it there, in a driveway, a side street, a car park or a filling station.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Belle Vue?

Every job is different, and so no fixed price is fair. Three things shift the price: whether your engine has run and for how long, how much AdBlue went in, and where the vehicle is. That last one comes down to whether a van can get to it safely, and an open drive is simpler than a tight gap behind HideOut.

Ahead of a figure, not afterwards, each call from Belle Vue begins with three questions: the liquid, the quantity, plus whether it ran. Given those replies, the range narrows to one fixed number.

The price is given on the call, before a van leaves; payment happens on the day, by card or over the phone, and nothing upfront. Look at your insurance while we're on the way: plenty carry misfuelling cover.

Belle Vue: still next to your car?
