Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Belle Vue: Why It Occurs

Stop reading a minute if the diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, and call 0333 366 0103. Caught before your motor runs, it is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Belle Vue. Not happened yet? Below, the page covers the why it takes place and the how to avoid it altogether.

AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

Diesel goes to your engine — yet plenty of current diesels driven round Belle Vue and Frankwell hold another fluid as well. The exhaust, not your engine, is where AdBlue ends up: sprayed into the gas to clean it, from its own tank.

Each tank has its own filler. Under one flap, side by side: that is the arrangement on a lot of vehicles. On others, AdBlue's filler sits beneath the bonnet or in the boot instead. At the petrol pump, the diesel side gets filled all the time. Someone who has to stop and think where it goes normally tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less often. It is in that gap that the slip happens.

Belle Vue: how AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs

Seldom is it carelessness: normally three things coincide.

Haste follows from the warning. The vehicle tells you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank puts the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up gets done quickly, before work on a drive off Luciefelde Road, or heading home in the car park at The Coleham Tap.

Unfamiliar motors come second, as well. Hire cars, new vehicles and company vehicles put their fillers differently, and habit reaches for the cap it used on the old one.

A spout-topped bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. And so the tip, after started, keeps on. Kingsland or the middle of Belle Vue: it is the same few seconds in both.

How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Be it a Belle Vue forecourt or a driveway over in Meole Brace, spend a couple of seconds on these before any goes in.

  • Check the cap rather than going by where it sits: AdBlue caps are often blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones normally aren't.
  • Many motors fit AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.
  • The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Many cars say there which fuel goes where.
  • Cannot find it beside your diesel inlet? In that case check beneath the bonnet or inside the boot — the owner's manual will say which.
  • Picking up a hire or company car, say at the car park at Shrewsbury? Check with the person who drove the vehicle last before you set off, not once the light goes on.

AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

When the light comes on, wherever around Shropshire, follow this routine.

  • Turn off after you park — level ground, engine off, and not rushed beside South Hermitage at the roadside.
  • Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after finding the AdBlue filler and reading it. Silly, yes, but it works.
  • If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave it on.
  • Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.
  • Before starting the vehicle, close the cap and check a second time that the diesel cap was never opened off.

Find during the second or third step that the bottle went in the diesel tank? That is where you stop. Never go on to stage five.

Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Belle Vue?

Brief order, then. First: the engine stays off. Do not switch your ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump. Diluting it with more diesel won't work, because AdBlue settles to the base instead of mixing — and that is where the fuel is drawn from.

Ask the staff to help roll the vehicle clear of the pump if you are at a forecourt — the Asda, the Esso or anywhere else. Your own driveway around Belle Vue is the place it should stay.

When the engine has been run already, pull over safely then switch it off. Come off the M54 — under 10 miles out of Belle Vue — at the next exit. Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Wrexham, under 50 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Belle Vue.

Belle Vue: what occurs when our engineers get there

Our van comes to the vehicle anywhere it stopped — your own drive, beside Buzzard Sculpture, or outside Coleham Primary School. The replies settle the work and our price, so we ask what went in, about how much, and whether it's run. You get that price by phone, before anyone sets off.

Next: a drain, then a full flush of the whole system. AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why that counts more here than with petrol. Filter cleaned or, if needed, replaced; clean diesel in; then a test of the vehicle. We do not leave until it has been started and is running correctly.

If your engine hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night. The insurer will ask for an engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and you get both at the end. Payment is on the day, with no money upfront. Wrong-fuel cover is included in plenty of insurance policies — and so use the wait to check yours.
