Why It Occurs and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Belle Vue

Leave your motor and ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103 now — the rest can wait if AdBlue is already in the diesel tank. Caught before your engine runs, it's usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Belle Vue. The remainder of this page covers why it takes place and how to make sure it does not — useful if you're reading before it has happened.

Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?

Plenty of modern diesels on the roads about Belle Vue and Lakeside Village carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your engine. Its own tank holds it, and from there it goes to the exhaust, where spraying cleans the fumes.

There's a filler on each tank. On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet. Topping up your diesel side at the petrol pump happens constantly. A driver who has to stop and think where it goes normally tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less regularly. The mistake grows in that gap between the two.

AdBlue in your diesel tank in Belle Vue: how it happens

Carelessness seldom causes it. What does is three things coming up at once.

Haste comes from the warning. Your car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank sends the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up happens in a rush, before work on a drive off Franklin Crescent, or heading home in the car park outside The Park Hotel.

Unfamiliar vehicles are second, as well. Rentals, new motors and company vehicles put their fillers differently, and the hand reaches for the cap it used on the old one.

Third, the spout goes in: diesel filler or AdBlue one, it goes in just as readily, and once the pour starts, no part stops it. The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Belle Vue or out in Intake.

Flushing a diesel fuel system after AdBlue, Belle Vue

The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Look at these before pouring, on a forecourt around Belle Vue or a drive over in Wheatley. Seconds, that's all.

  • Position misleads; the cap does not. AdBlue ones are often blue or carry the name "AdBlue" — diesel caps usually do not.
  • Plenty of motors give AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.
  • The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Many vehicles say there which fuel goes where.
  • The handbook says which it lives if the filler is not next to your diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.
  • The person who drove it last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park at Doncaster, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

On the day the warning appears — anywhere you are across South Yorkshire — a routine to use.

  • Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Thorpe Gardens.
  • Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once you find the AdBlue filler and read it. Silly, yes, but it works.
  • Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.
  • Stop once the tank is topped up or the bottle is empty; before that, pour gently through the own spout.
  • Close the cap, and look once more — making sure your diesel cap remained closed throughout. After that, start the vehicle.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there. Leave out step five entirely.

Belle Vue: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

The short order of things, beginning with not starting the engine. Leave the ignition off too, since on many diesels switching it on alone runs your pump. Do not top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is sucked from.

Ask the staff to help push the vehicle away from the pump if you are at a forecourt — the Asda, the Shell or anywhere else. Your own drive around Belle Vue is the place it stays.

Where your motor has run by now, pull over safely then turn the car off. Belle Vue lies under 3 miles from the M18; there, take the next exit. Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Doncaster, under a mile away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Belle Vue.

Belle Vue: what occurs when our engineers turn up

We come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside Lakeside Primary Academy, near Jamia Sulthainia Mosque or on your own drive. What liquid was put in, the quantity, and whether it ran: we ask since those replies set both work and quote. You hear that quote by phone, before anyone sets off.

Your system is then purged thoroughly, once the tank is drained. With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own. The filter cleaned or, where needed, replaced; clean diesel in; and then a check of your vehicle. Your engine is started next and checked to be sure it runs correctly, all before our technicians head off.

Unstarted cars mostly mean a half-hour visit after arrival. The equipment is safe on a busy forecourt, and quiet enough for a driveway late at night. The insurer usually wants the engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and you get both once this job is done. Payment comes on the day, with no deposit. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.

AdBlue drains across South Yorkshire, Belle Vue included

Shifting the car is not necessary. Our technicians drain it where it is — a side street near Falklands War Memorial, a lay-by on the way to Runway Park, a driveway. Awkward to explain, like the back of Northern Battle of Britain Memorial? Close to a county line? Asking is better than assuming, so ring.
