Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Belmont

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, your ignition stays off and so does the motor. Urea dissolved in water is all AdBlue is. It does not burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the damage it does begins when the system draws it in. Caught before the motor has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Belmont. First, phone us on 0333 366 0103.

AdBlue in your diesel tank around Belmont: the first few minutes

Do these:

  • Pull your keys out, so nobody switches the ignition on.
  • Close to moving traffic? So put the hazards on.
  • Hold on to the till receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what got in and about how much.
  • Give us a postcode starting SM2 6, or whichever street lies closest, and our van finds you directly — so call wherever you stand.

Never:

  • Shifting the vehicle even a few yards is no reason to start the engine.
  • Do not switch your ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • No extra fuel on top. The AdBlue will not mix, so it is pointless.
  • Leave the vehicle where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short distance along The Crescent.
  • Beside the road, don't attempt draining it yourself.

Ask the attendants to help you move the car off the island if you are on a forecourt around Belmont, whether it's the BP or somewhere else. Stopped on your own driveway? Then it stays exactly where it is.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not the motor. From a separate reservoir it is fed directly to the exhaust, cleaning what your engine lets out. Nothing in a fuel pump is made for this liquid — and no part of that was intended to go through one.

It does not blend. After it's poured into a tank of diesel, AdBlue acts not at all like fuel. It is heavier than diesel, so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of your tank, which is where the pickup pulls fuel from. A motor filled on a drive in Banstead overnight and not started since counts as the simple case. Nothing has sucked the AdBlue up yet — but when your motor turns, that's what goes first, directly from the bottom of that tank.

From there it causes two kinds of damage. It attacks some metals found in fuel systems, working on whatever it reaches until it is removed completely. And when the water goes, the urea forms crystals that block filters and settle in tiny channels. Pipes holding AdBlue mean damage overnight for a vehicle parked in Belmont. Just inside that tank, it stays stable. Then there is the water: it offers no protection to the components that need it the most — the high-pressure pump and each injector.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Belmont

Why is AdBlue in a diesel often the bigger fault?

Top up a diesel with petrol in error over at the Shell, and this issue is diluted fuel. It mixes with the diesel, and while it is inside that tank it causes no harm; the harm comes from running your engine on it.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely wrong substance. It doesn't burn, and so it cannot simply be run through. Crystals and corrosion remain after the following fill, and AdBlue separates again from your diesel, and so thinning it can't help. That is why the flush matters more, and trying your engine "to see" does more harm here than nearly any other mistake — in East Ewell or the centre of Belmont equally.

The good news is the same as with petrol. Anywhere across Greater London your vehicle has stopped, an unrun engine leaves the AdBlue yet in the reservoir: the easiest bit of any fuel system to empty.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Belmont: how it ends up there

Plenty of cars place the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel cap, occasionally behind one flap, and in dim light the two can appear the same. Nobody means it. Mostly it takes place with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the pump.

Usually, it happens in one of a few familiar ways. The refill gets hurried outside Avenue Primary Academy, after the dash flashed with a warning while the children were dropped off. In the evening, a bottle is tipped in on a drive close to Station Road. Else, after dark outside The California, your car gets topped up by a driver using that flap for the first time.

The least familiar cars get it most — rentals, brand-new cars, fleet ones, and the other vehicle in a family with one of each fuels. Leave it off: that is the first response to the same mistake, anywhere in Belmont or the remainder of Greater London you are.

Started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Belmont?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer inside your tank. Through the fuel filter, along the pipework, and — given any running — on to the injection pump and every injector: that is how far it travels.

You may notice the motor running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, maybe on the way back from The Pastures or halfway across Belmont. Pull over when safe. Turn off. Keep the car off instead of restarting it to check. Each start pulls more of it through.

Leave the M23, under 5 miles from Belmont, by the first junction and stop safely, rather than driving on.

Each mile pushes the AdBlue further into your system. That is why crossing Belmont to park beside Belmont War Memorial and a drive of under 15 miles towards Westminster are such separate jobs. Let us know about how far it had come.

Our engineers do all of the flushing where the vehicle has ended up, and once your engine has been started there is more of it. Very seldom does it leave lasting damage when it's caught soon.

Belmont: how AdBlue is cleared from a diesel

A street beside St John the Baptist, a driveway, a lay-by or a forecourt: wherever your car has come to rest in Belmont, we come to it. The work depends on three replies, and our technicians get first — what was put in, the amount, and whether your motor has turned over.

Next, draining your tank on the spot removes the contaminated diesel along with the AdBlue in one go. Your system is rinsed thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own. Testing your vehicle follows last, once clean diesel goes in and the fuel filter is cleaned or, if necessary, replaced. The majority of these jobs are a half-hour job once our technicians get there, if your engine has not run. The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

The final step is to prime the fuel system on fresh diesel. Whether it is a parking space outside the nearest station or a drive around Belmont, that is where our engineers start it and you set off. The test before our technicians head off is that it runs smoothly on clean diesel. Our engineers do it all wherever the vehicle has stopped, and it never has to go to a garage. Your insurer will want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — each handed over afterwards.

Belmont and Greater London: AdBlue drains across the area

Our teams that answer AdBlue jobs in Belmont also cover the places round it, Cheam, Carshalton Beeches and Sutton among them, and most of Greater London beyond, across the SM postcode area. Phone and check rather than guess if you're close to a border, or somewhere tricky to explain.

A mobile service suits Belmont, a residential suburb: there's no need to take your car to us, because our engineers drain it on the spot, in a driveway, a side street, a car park or a filling station.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Belmont?

Since each jobs vary, a flat price wouldn't be fair. Whether your engine has been running, and for how long, comes first in what shifts the cost. How much AdBlue was put in comes next, and then the position of your car, since an open drive is easier for our van to reach safely than a tight space behind Sutton Bowls Club.

That is why every call from Belmont starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what went in, how much, and whether it has run. When those are known, a range turns into a single fixed figure.

Before a van sets off, you are told our price on the phone. And payment is on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
