How It Occurs and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Belmont

Stop reading a minute if the diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, and call 0333 366 0103. Caught before your engine runs, it is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Belmont. Nothing happened yet? Below, the rest of the page explains the reasons it takes place and the ways to avoid it altogether.

Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Diesel feeds your motor — but plenty of current diesels seen around Belmont and Kincaidston hold another liquid too. AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Separate tanks, different fillers. Many of motors share a single flap for the two, while some put the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet. Filling the diesel side at the petrol pump happens constantly. Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes normally fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less frequently. The slip lives in that gap.

How AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs in Belmont

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, your vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Nursery Road before work, or in the car park outside The Chase on the way home.

Unfamiliar vehicles come next, as well. Rentals, new vehicles and company motors put their fillers in new places, and habit goes for the cap it used on the old one.

No part halts the pour after it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits. The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Belmont or out in Castlehill.

Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Look at these before pouring, at a forecourt in Belmont or a drive out in Laigh Glengall. A few seconds, no more.

  • Check the cap instead of going by position: AdBlue ones are frequently blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally are not.
  • On plenty of motors, size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.
  • Look inside the fuel flap: many vehicles carry a label there saying which fuel goes where.
  • Cannot see it beside the diesel filler? Then check below the bonnet or inside your boot — the owner's manual says which.
  • The person who drove the car last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park outside Ayr, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever in South Ayrshire that is.

  • Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with your engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Belmont Road.
  • Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it does the trick.
  • The diesel cap remains on. When both share a flap, make sure it is shut before lifting the bottle.
  • Finish once that tank is topped up or the bottle runs dry; until then, pour slowly through its built-in spout.
  • Before you start your car, shut the cap and check again that your diesel cap was never opened off.

Spot at step two or three that it's already gone into the diesel side? Then stop right there. Don't carry on to step five.

Put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Belmont already?

Don't start the motor: that is where the short order of things starts. Keep the ignition off too, since on plenty of diesels switching it on by itself starts the fuel pump. Don't top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is pulled from.

The attendants at BP, another forecourt nearby or any forecourt will normally lend a hand to push your car away when asked. If you're on your own driveway in Belmont, leave the vehicle where it is.

Where your motor has run by now, pull over somewhere safe then turn the vehicle off. Belmont lies under 25 miles from the M77; there, take the first junction. Distance matters — a quick hop across Belmont is a smaller job than heading under 50 miles towards Glasgow — so say roughly how far it went.

When our engineers arrive around Belmont, what takes place?

We come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside the local primary school, near Castlehill Parish Church or on your own driveway. What fluid was put in, the quantity, and if it ran: our engineers ask since the answers set the work and price. During the phone call itself, you are told our quote — ahead of anything else.

Then the tank is cleared and the fuel system cleaned thoroughly. Not like petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and attacks certain fuel-system metals, and none of that washes away by itself. That is why it counts more. A test is at the end: before that, clean diesel is added, and the filter is flushed or changed as needed. The motor is started next and tested to make sure it runs correctly, all before our engineers head off.

Most jobs are done in roughly half an hour after our technicians get there, as long as the motor has not run — and the pumps our technicians use are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet at night beside a house. You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer. Before we get there, take a look at your insurance documents; many carry cover for misfuelling.

The car remains where it is. We drain it where it is — a side street close to Saint Paul's, a lay-by on the way to Corsehill Gardens, a driveway. Ring and ask rather than assuming if you're close to a border, or somewhere hard to describe, like the back of Mormon Church.
