AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Bevendean? Don't Start It

Engine off, ignition off: that is how you start if AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank. Water with urea mixed in it: that's AdBlue. Unlike fuel, it neither burns nor mixes, and no harm starts till your motor pulls it round. Caught before the motor has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Bevendean. Before anything, phone us on 0333 366 0103.

Bevendean, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do right away

Do:

  • Keys out — that way nobody can power anything on.
  • Near moving traffic? Then put the hazard lights on.
  • Which fluid, and roughly how much quantity? Save the bottle or your receipt, and we can see.
  • Call us from where you are. A postcode starting BN2 4, or the name of the closest street, brings the van to you without a search.

Not to do:

  • No starting your motor — not briefly, not to reposition your car.
  • Many diesels power their fuel pump the instant the ignition goes on, and so keep the car off.
  • Do not top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue does not mix in diesel; it separates out.
  • Any driving at all is to be avoided, including a short way down Wilson Avenue.
  • Don't try to drain it yourself by the kerbside.

Get the people behind the counter to help you move the vehicle away from the island if you are on a forecourt around Bevendean, whether it's the Esso or somewhere else. Stopped on your own drive? Then it remains just as it is.

AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Not the motor but your exhaust is where AdBlue is meant to go. Stored in a separate tank, it's squirted into the exhaust to treat the fumes. A fuel pump isn't designed to take it, and AdBlue was never intended to travel through one.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves very differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in. It sinks, since it's denser than diesel, and pools low where the intake takes its fuel from. The first thing the fuel system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a motor that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Woodingdean last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the straightforward case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of your tank, and nothing has sucked it in.

Two kinds of harm follow from there. What is left once the water evaporates is urea, which turns into crystals: they lodge in narrow passages and block filters. Worse, it eats at certain metals in a fuel system, and carries on till it's flushed out. A car left sitting in Bevendean with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank is not. Water lubricates nothing. The high-pressure pump and each injector need diesel running past them, so the water part damages them by itself.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Bevendean

Why AdBlue in a diesel is commonly more major than petrol

An issue of thinned fuel is what you end up with after filling a diesel with petrol at the BP. Blended into the diesel and sitting unused, it's harmless for now; using the motor is the harm.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid as such is plainly the wrong one. Because it does not burn, running it through is not an option. It does not stay mixed, so it cannot be thinned. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your motor "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether the car is in East Moulsecoomb or the middle of Bevendean.

The same good news applies as with petrol. Anywhere around East Sussex the vehicle has stopped, an unrun motor means the AdBlue still inside the reservoir: the simplest bit of any fuel system to clear.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Bevendean

Many cars put the AdBlue filler beside the diesel cap, now and then under one flap, and in dim light the two can appear the same. No one means it. A container picked up while heading home and tipped in at home, instead of at the forecourt, is the typical route.

A few familiar ways account for the majority of them. Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside Bevendean Primary School and Nursery the top-up is rushed. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Bear Road. Else, in dim light outside Fox on the Downs, the car is topped up by a driver using that flap the first time.

Hired vehicles, brand-new vehicles, company cars, or the second car in a family with both fuels: the least known cars get it most. Anywhere across East Sussex, Bevendean as well, the slip doesn't change, and nor does the first response: leave it off.

AdBlue in the diesel tank around Bevendean, and the engine started?

Then your tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. Via the fuel filter, through the lines, and — given any running time — into the injection pump and each injector: that's how far it has gone.

You may notice your engine running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, perhaps on the way back from Farm Green or halfway across Bevendean. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart the car to check. More of it is pulled through with each start.

Bevendean lies under 25 miles from the M23; if you were on it, exit at the first junction and pull up safely instead of driving on.

How far it went counts. A few hundred yards across Bevendean to the car park by Blue Lagoon Warm Water Centre is a very different job from a run towards Brighton and Hove, under 3 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with every mile. Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

Wherever your car came to a stop is where all of it gets done, even with more to rinse out once the engine has been run. Very seldom does it leave permanent damage if it's noticed soon.

Bevendean: how AdBlue is emptied from a diesel

Wherever it has come to rest in Bevendean — a filling station, a layby, a drive, a street by Heath Hill Farm — our van travels to your vehicle. Three answers shape the job, and so first our technicians ask what went in, about what quantity, and whether the engine has turned over.

Next, draining that tank on the spot takes out the polluted diesel along with the AdBlue in one go. A careful flush counts much more with AdBlue than with petrol, because residue won't clear out by itself. Fresh diesel goes in after your filter is cleaned — or replaced, if it needs to be — and then the vehicle is tested. If your motor hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once our engineers are there. The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

The last step is to bleed your system on new diesel. After that our technicians fire it up and you set off, whether from a parking space by Moulsecoomb or a driveway in Bevendean. It is checked on clean diesel to confirm it runs properly before our engineers leave. As the job is done in its entirety where your car is, a workshop never comes into it. The insurer will want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — both yours once the job is done.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Bevendean

Because the callouts vary, a single price wouldn't be fair. Whether the engine has been running, and for how long, comes first in what changes the cost. How much AdBlue was put in comes next, and then the location of the vehicle, because an open drive is easier for a van to get to safely than a tight gap behind Valley Social Centre.

With that in mind, every enquiry from Bevendean begins by asking the same trio — which fluid went in, what quantity, whether the engine ran — ahead of a quote. Those answers turn a range into a straight price.

Before a van heads out, you are told the price on the phone. And payment is on the day, card or by phone, with nothing upfront. Look at your insurance whilst we are on the way: plenty include misfuelling cover.
