Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Bewsey: Why It Happens
If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the motor and your ignition off and call 0333 366 0103. Normally, if the engine has not turned, it is emptied and thoroughly flushed where the car is around Bewsey. Nothing happened yet? Further down, the rest of the page explains the why it happens and the how to prevent it for good.
Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?
Plenty of newer diesels on the roads about Bewsey and Hood Manor carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the engine. AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.
Each tank has its own filler. Some cars put the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty of others place the two side by side under one flap. At the petrol pump, your diesel side gets filled all the time. Rarely topped up, AdBlue normally goes in from a bottle, tipped by someone who must stop and think what cap to use. The mistake lives in that gap.
How does AdBlue in the diesel tank take place in Bewsey?
Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is rarely one of them.
Hurry comes from the warning. The car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank puts it into limp mode — so the top-up gets done quickly, before work on a drive off Lodge Lane, or heading home in the car park at The Imperial Hotel.
New-to-you cars come next, as well. Rentals, new vehicles and company motors place their fillers differently, and the hand reaches for the cap used on the old one.
No part halts the pour once it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits. The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Bewsey or out in Whitecross.
Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?
Look at these first, on a forecourt in Bewsey or a driveway over in Callands. A few seconds, that's all.
- Check the cap instead of going by where it sits: AdBlue ones are often blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones usually are not.
- The size. On many motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.
- Open the filler flap and look for a label — plenty of cars show which goes in which filler just there.
- The handbook. If the filler is not by your diesel cap, it is in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.
- Picking up a hire or company car, say at the car park at Warrington Central? Ask whoever drove the vehicle last before leaving, not once the light goes on.
Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up
A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across Cheshire that is.
- Pull in on level, engine off, with time in hand — never hurried on the side of Troutbeck Avenue.
- Locate the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and say the name "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew it. It seems silly. It does the trick.
- The diesel cap remains on. Where both sit under a flap, make sure it is shut before the bottle comes up.
- Finish once that tank fills or the bottle runs dry; before that, pour slowly through its own spout.
- Before you start the vehicle, close the cap and check again that the diesel cap was never opened off.
Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you have already poured into the diesel side. Do not go on to stage five.
Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Bewsey?
What follows is a short order of things, beginning with not starting the motor. The fuel pump runs on many diesels as soon as your ignition is switched on — so leave it off. Do not top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is pulled from.
If you're on a forecourt, whether it is the Texaco or the Tesco, ask the attendants to help push your car clear of the petrol pump. On your own drive in Bewsey? So your car remains where it is.
When the motor has run already, pull over safely and switch it off. Bewsey sits under 3 miles from the M62; there, use the next junction. A short hop across Bewsey is a smaller job than a run towards Salford, under 15 miles away, so tell us about how far it went.
What occurs when our engineers arrive around Bewsey
By Bewsey Lodge Academy, close to Bewsey Park Pavillion or on your own drive: wherever the car has stopped, we come to it. We ask what went in, about how much, and whether it has run, since the replies decide this work and our quote. You get that price by phone, before anyone sets off.
Emptying that tank comes next, followed by a full flush of the fuel system. With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own. Your filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested. Your engine is started next and tested to confirm it runs smoothly, all before our technicians go.
If your motor has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night. Payment happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the documents an insurer wants: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
