Bill Quay: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?
Keep your motor and ignition off then ring 0333 366 0103 first — reading can wait if AdBlue is already in your diesel tank. Caught before the motor runs, it is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Bill Quay. Reading before the event? In that case what follows covers why it happens and how to prevent it happening at all.
Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle
Many modern diesels around St Anthonys, like those in Bill Quay, carry on two liquids; the motor gets only the diesel. Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into the exhaust stream to clean it.
Every tank comes with a filler of its own. Some cars put the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty more have both side by side behind one flap. The diesel side is topped up at the pump all the time. Much less commonly, the AdBlue side is filled — normally from a bottle, by someone working out where it goes. It's in that gap that the error lives.
How AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs around Bill Quay
Carelessness seldom explains it. What does is three things coming up at once.
Hurry comes from the warning. Your car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank sends it into limp mode — so the top-up gets done in a rush, before work on a driveway off Brack Terrace, or heading home in the car park outside The Wardley.
The old car's filler is where the hand goes — yet a hire car, a new car or a company car keeps the fillers elsewhere. That is the second factor: an unfamiliar vehicle.
No part halts the tip once it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits. The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Bill Quay or out in Pelaw.
The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart
Whether a Bill Quay forecourt or a driveway out in Heworth Lane, take a few seconds on these before any is poured in.
- Blue and marking: an AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually does not. Trust the cap, not where it sits.
- The size. On plenty of motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.
- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Plenty of vehicles say there which fuel goes where.
- The handbook says where it is if the filler isn't next to the diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.
- The person who drove the car last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park outside Heworth, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.
How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank
The day the light comes on, wherever across Tyne and Wear, follow this routine.
- Not in a rush on the side of Hainingwood Terrace, not on a slope, not with your engine running: park and switch off properly.
- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once finding the AdBlue filler and read it. Daft, yes, but it works.
- The diesel cap stays on. When the two share a flap, confirm it is closed before lifting the bottle.
- Gently does it, through the bottle's own spout, till it is full or the bottle is empty.
- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.
Spot at stage two or three that it's already gone into the diesel side? Then stop right there. Leave out stage five altogether.
Put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Bill Quay already?
Then the order of things is short. Do not start the engine. Leave the ignition off as well, because on plenty of diesels it alone runs your pump. AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is sucked from — so do not top up with diesel to thin it.
At a forecourt — JET, Jet or any other — the attendants will normally help roll the vehicle clear, if you ask. Leave it where it is if you're on your own drive in Bill Quay.
Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if the engine has already run. The next exit means where to come off if you are on the A194(M), under 3 miles from Bill Quay. A short hop across Bill Quay is a smaller job than a run towards Newcastle upon Tyne, under 5 miles away, so tell us about how far it went.
When our engineers turn up around Bill Quay, what happens?
By Bill Quay Primary School, close to Hertfordshire House Community Centre or on your own driveway: wherever the car has stopped, we come to it. Those answers determine this work and the quote, so our engineers ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether it's run. Nobody heads out before you've had our quote by phone.
Draining your tank comes next, followed by a thorough flush of your system. Much more than with petrol, it matters here: the crystals form, certain metals corrode, and nothing washes away unaided, no matter how long it is left. Testing is last: before that, fresh diesel goes in, and the filter is cleaned or changed if necessary. Then our technicians fire it up and check it runs smoothly before we go.
Most jobs are done in about half an hour after our engineers arrive, as long as the engine has not run — and the pumps our engineers use are fine on a live forecourt yet quiet at night beside a house. You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer. Misfuelling cover is included in many insurance policies — so use the wait to look at yours.
