AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Bilton: What Now?

All of that hinges on one detail: whether your motor has started after the AdBlue was added — far more than anything else. Not started so far? Then leave the car like that, whether the vehicle sits — Bilton or New Bilton. Leave the engine and the ignition off then ring 0333 366 0103; it's usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Bilton. Where the engine has run, pull in somewhere safe first, then switch the car off. The job is bigger, yet the first step is the same.

Find the scenario below that matches yours, wherever in Warwickshire it happened.

On a Bilton forecourt with AdBlue in a diesel

Picture it: stood by the pump, holding the bottle, you spot the cap you opened wasn't the correct one. Anywhere in Bilton, then — Sainsburys, BP, or somewhere else nearby.

What it means: this is the ideal location to find out. The AdBlue is inside your tank and nowhere else. Nothing has sucked it in.

Do this: keep out of the car, however much the pump needs freeing. Get the staff to help rolling it into a space, save the receipt, then ring us from there. Draining it right at the pump is fine when it cannot be moved, because the equipment is explosion-proof.

AdBlue in your diesel tank on a Bilton drive?

On your dash, a warning had shown for days. Bought a container, poured it in outside the house, binned the empty — and only then checked the cap a second time, too late. Houses just off Hobley Close are caught out as often as everywhere else.

The point: no driving since makes it almost as good to finding it at the pump. On the bottom of the tank sits exactly where AdBlue waits, because it won't mix with diesel — and a night passing makes no difference.

Your move: keys in the house, so nobody takes the car anywhere first thing. After that, ring. We drain it on your driveway, whether that's around Bilton or out in Overslade. Even at night, the pumps are quiet enough for a driveway.

AdBlue in a diesel and already driving in Bilton?

A mile or two after filling up, your motor began misbehaving: roughness, smoke, less power, lights on the dash. Bawnmore Road, say, or the route towards Coventry — a trip of under 10 miles.

Put simply: the AdBlue has been pulled into the system. It's been through your filter and the lines and, the further you went, into the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel injectors. Each mile and each restart takes it further.

What to do: pull over where it is safe then switch off. On the M45, under 3 miles from Bilton, that means the next exit, not the services further on. Starting it again to test achieves nothing — AdBlue doesn't clear on its own. Let us know the mileage covered as you call.

AdBlue in the wrong tank: hire, lease and company cars

It is a car you have had for a week. Unbeknown to you, the two inlets are next to each other here — not like your own car, which has none or stores it elsewhere. Any driver, anywhere across Warwickshire, might do the same.

Meaning? Whichever applies above applies too — run or not — plus one further stage. Many hire and company contracts require the owner's sign-off for work.

Sorting it before the van turn up is faster, and so ring the hire company or your fleet manager, and then us. Keep it switched off while the reply comes, even if you are parked outside Rugby or close to Bilton Bowling Club.

Not sure it was AdBlue in your diesel tank, Bilton?

Occasionally the honest answer is "I think so". Which cap was taken off, you can't say; meanwhile the bottle weighs lighter than it ought to, and a whiff of ammonia hangs by your filler. It might have been on a friend's drive in Dunchurch, or rushing outside Bilton Infant School at the school run.

Put simply: spillage round your filler leaves your motor unharmed. The diesel tank with AdBlue in it is another story. Any AdBlue in that tank would be pulled in by firing up your car, and the start would not settle which it is in any case.

Next: assume it went in, and keep your motor off. Tell us what you saw on the phone. A clean tank looked at is a better outcome than a run one drained.

The common ground in every Bilton AdBlue drain

Whichever situation you are in, the job starts the same way. Filling station, drive, The George @ Bilton's car park or a street beside St Mark — the van reaches the vehicle, and three questions come next: what liquid, which quantity, and whether it ran. Those replies decide the work, and you get our price on the phone, before anyone heads out.

Emptying your tank comes first, then a careful flush — more vital with urea than with petrol, since crystals and corrosion won't go by themselves, no matter how long it sits. The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested. Most unrun cars are a half-hour job after the moment our engineers turn up.

Last, our technicians fire it up. With new diesel in, it runs while we check it is running smoothly, and then we head off. The whole job is done where your car is, and when it is spotted quickly, long-term damage is very uncommon. Paying comes on the day, never in advance. For your insurer, you get a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours while we're on the way.
