A drain plus a full flush, carried out just where your car stands in Bingham, is normally all it takes if caught before your engine runs. Not happened yet? Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

Diesel goes to your motor — yet plenty of current diesels driven about Bingham and Tithby carry another fluid too. Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into the exhaust stream to clean it.

There's a filler on every tank. Under one flap, next to each other: that is the arrangement on many cars. On others, AdBlue's filler sits beneath the bonnet or in the boot instead. The diesel side is topped up at the petrol pump all the time. A driver who has to stop and think where it goes usually tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less often. The mistake grows in that gap between the two.

How does AdBlue in your diesel tank occur around Bingham?

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

On a drive off Long Acre before work, or in the car park at The Wheatsheaf on the way home: that's where the rushed top-up takes place. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low your car warns you, and if it's gone, limp mode follows.

Then your car is new. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and your hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the tip after it has started. The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Bingham or out in Burrowsmoor Holt.

The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

A few seconds is all the checks take — so check them before you pour anything, on a driveway in Car Colston or a forecourt in Bingham.

  • The cap. The AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally isn't. Read it instead of going by position.
  • The size. On many vehicles the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.
  • A label inside the fuel flap frequently says which fuel goes where, on many motors. Check for it.
  • The handbook. If the filler is not by your diesel cap, it is in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.
  • Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at the nearest station.

Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

The day the light goes on, wherever across Nottinghamshire, use this routine.

  • Pull in on level, engine off, with time in hand — not rushing on the side of Fisher Lane.
  • Locate the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and say the name "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew it. It sounds silly. It works.
  • The diesel cap stays on. When both sit under a flap, make sure it is closed before lifting the bottle.
  • Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.
  • Only after that, start your car: close the cap, check once more, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you have already poured into the diesel side. Don't go on to stage five.

Bingham: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start your motor. Keep the ignition off too, since on many diesels it by itself starts the fuel pump. Don't top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is pulled from.

At a forecourt — Esso, Shell or any other — the attendants will normally help roll the car away, when you ask. Leave it where it is if you're on your own driveway around Bingham.

If your motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off. Come off the M1 — under 15 miles out of Bingham — at the next exit. Distance matters — a short hop across Bingham makes a smaller job than driving under 10 miles to Nottingham — so tell us roughly how far it went.

What occurs when we arrive around Bingham

By Robert Miles Junior School, near Methodist Centre or on your own driveway: wherever the vehicle has stopped, our technicians come to it. The answers settle this work and our quote, and so our technicians ask what got in, about how much, and whether it has run. During the phone call itself, you hear our quote — ahead of anything else.

Then the tank is cleared and the system cleaned thoroughly. More than with petrol, it counts here: crystals form, some metals are attacked, and nothing washes away on its own, no matter how long it sits. Testing comes last: before that, clean diesel goes in, and your filter is cleaned or changed if necessary. Your engine is started next and checked to make sure it runs properly, all before our engineers leave.

Unrun vehicles mostly mean a half-hour visit after arrival. The equipment is safe on a busy filling station, and hushed enough for a residential street after dark. You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.
