Bingley: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?
Keep the motor and ignition off then ring 0333 366 0103 first — reading can wait when AdBlue is already in the diesel tank. Caught before the engine runs, it's generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Bingley. Nothing happened yet? Further down, the rest of the page explains the why it occurs and the how to prevent it for good.
AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank
Diesel feeds your motor — but many current diesels seen round Bingley and Ferncliffe hold another liquid too. AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.
Different tanks, different fillers. Other motors keep the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty of others have the two together under one flap. Filling the diesel side at the petrol pump happens constantly. Much less regularly, the AdBlue side is topped up — mostly from a bottle, by someone thinking about where it goes. That gap is where the mistake lives.
How does AdBlue in the diesel tank occur in Bingley?
Carelessness rarely explains it. Instead is three things lining up together.
Haste follows from the warning. The car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank sends the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up gets done quickly, before work on a drive off Main Street, or on the way home in the car park at The Myrtle Grove.
Then the vehicle is strange. A hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.
Nothing stops the tip after it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits. Whether it takes place in Old Hills or the middle of Bingley, it's the same few seconds.
Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler
Be it a Bingley forecourt or a driveway out in Priestthorpe, spend a couple of seconds on these before any goes in.
- Read the cap rather than going by position: AdBlue caps are often blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones normally aren't.
- Many cars give AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.
- Open the filler flap and look for a label — many vehicles mark what goes in each inlet right there.
- The handbook says where it lives if the filler isn't next to your diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.
- Picking up a hire or company car, say at the car park outside the nearest station? Check with the person who drove the vehicle last before you set off, rather than once the light comes on.
AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank
Anywhere around West Yorkshire the light comes on, this is a routine for that day.
- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Ferncliffe Road.
- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it does the trick.
- Both behind a single flap? Then confirm the lid on your diesel filler is still shut before lifting the bottle.
- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.
- Close the cap, then check again — confirm the diesel filler stayed shut the whole time. Only then, start the car.
Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you have already poured into the diesel side. Step five stays off limits.
Put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Bingley already?
Short list, then. First: your engine stays off. Do not switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump. Do not top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is pulled from.
The staff at BP, Texaco or another forecourt will normally lend a hand to push the vehicle clear if you ask. Leave it where it is if you're on your own drive around Bingley.
Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if your motor has already run. Bingley sits under 10 miles from the M606; on it, take the next exit. A short hop across Bingley is a smaller job than a run towards Bradford, under 10 miles away, so tell us about how far it went.
Our arrival around Bingley, and what happens next
Outside Myrtle Park Primary, near Bingley Library or on your own driveway: wherever your car has stopped, our engineers come to it. Our engineers ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether it's run, because those replies determine the work and the quote. You get that price on the phone, before anybody sets off.
Emptying that tank comes next, followed by a full flush of the system. AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol. After the filter is cleaned — or replaced, where needed — clean diesel goes in, and then the vehicle is tested. We don't leave until it has been started and is running smoothly.
If your engine has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night. Payment happens on the day, not upfront, and you are given the paperwork your insurer wants: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice. It is worth looking at your insurance as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover is included with many policies.

Over BD postcodes, our vans that cover Bingley — a riverside town — work the surrounding places too, Bailey Hills and Crow Nest among them. Give a postcode beginning BD16 1, and the van gets there quickest.
Moving the vehicle is not necessary. Draining takes place right there, whether a drive, a road near Bingley Arts Centre, or a lay-by on the way to Sunken Garden. Ring and ask rather than guessing if you are near a border, or somewhere hard to explain, like the back of Bingley Independent Methodist Church.

Read the cap before you tip. Petrol in Diesel drains it where it stands, anywhere around West Yorkshire, if AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank anyway — and so leave the car off and call 0333 366 0103.
