Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Birchwood Centre: Why It Happens

Keep your engine and ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103 first — reading can wait when AdBlue is already in your diesel tank. Caught before your motor runs, it's generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Birchwood Centre. If you are reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it does not.

Why does AdBlue in a diesel motor need its own filler?

No single fluid but two: that's what many modern diesels around Birchwood Centre and Birchwood Park run, with diesel for your motor. AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Different tanks, separate fillers. Some cars keep the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; a lot of others have the two together under one flap. The diesel side is filled at the petrol pump all the time. Someone who has to stop and think where it goes normally tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less commonly. That gap is where the slip lives.

AdBlue in the diesel tank around Birchwood Centre: how it takes place

Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things coincide.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a warning from your car, and running dry means limp mode — so a hurried top-up, perhaps before work off Oakwood Gate Roundabout, or outside The Peacock on the way home after work.

Next, your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old motor — because a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car places the fillers somewhere your last one did not.

Nothing halts the pour after it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits. The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Birchwood Centre or out in Birchwood.

How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Before you tip anything, whether on a driveway in Risley or a forecourt around Birchwood Centre, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

  • Check the cap rather than going by position: AdBlue caps are regularly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones usually are not.
  • Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on plenty of vehicles, the AdBlue one.
  • Check inside your fuel flap: many cars have a label there showing which fuel goes where.
  • The handbook. If the filler is not by the diesel cap, it is in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.
  • Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Birchwood.

Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

Anywhere in Cheshire the light comes on, here is a routine for the day.

  • Stop on level, motor off, with time in hand — never hurried on the side of Talbot Close.
  • Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it does the trick.
  • Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.
  • Stop once your tank is topped up or the bottle is empty; before that, tip slowly using its own spout.
  • Shut the cap, then look again — confirm your diesel filler stayed closed throughout. After that, start your car.

Spot at step two or three that it's already gone into the diesel side? Then stop just there. Don't go on to stage five.

Birchwood Centre: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Do not start the motor: that's how the short order of things starts. Leave your ignition off too, because on plenty of diesels switching it on alone starts the pump. Topping up with diesel will not weaken it: rather than mixing, AdBlue sinks to the base of the tank, just where fuel is taken from.

At a forecourt — BP, Asda or another — the staff will normally help roll the vehicle clear, when you ask. If you are on your own drive in Birchwood Centre, leave the car where it stands.

Already started? Pull over once it's safe, then turn off. The next junction is the place to come off when you're on the M6, under a mile from Birchwood Centre. Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Salford, under 15 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Birchwood Centre.

What takes place when our engineers arrive in Birchwood Centre

Anywhere the vehicle has stopped, be it outside Locking Stumps Community Primary School, beside Birchwood Leisure & Tennis Centre or on your own drive, the van comes to it. We ask what went in, about how much, and whether it's run, since the answers decide the work and the quote. That quote is given over the phone, before any van leaves.

The fuel system is then purged thoroughly, after the tank is emptied. Unlike petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and none of it washes away unaided. That is why it counts more. Your filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested. Before leaving, our engineers start it and confirm that it's running correctly.

Most jobs are finished in roughly half an hour once we arrive, as long as your engine hasn't run — and the pumps we use are fine on a live forecourt yet quiet at night outside a house. You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer. Before we get there, have a look at your policy; plenty carry cover for misfuelling.
