AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Birkby? Keep It Switched Off

Motor off, ignition off: that's how you start if AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank. Water with urea dissolved in it: that's AdBlue. Not like fuel, it neither burns nor mixes, and no harm starts until your engine pulls it through. A drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Birkby, is normally all AdBlue in a diesel tank needs — if it's caught before your engine has been run. First, phone us on 0333 366 0103.

Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank around Birkby

Do these:

  • Take your keys out, and so nobody switches the ignition on.
  • Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere close.
  • The empty bottle or your receipt tells us the fluid and the amount, so do not throw it away.
  • Our van finds you fastest with a postcode starting HD2 2, or simply the name of a street close by, and so phone from the spot.

Don't do these:

  • Not even briefly, and not to shift your vehicle: your motor stays off.
  • Turning the key to ignition by itself starts your pump running on plenty of diesels. Avoid it.
  • Don't top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel; it separates out.
  • Don't drive the car anywhere, not even a short distance along Macaulay Road.
  • By the road, do not try emptying it yourself.

Moving your vehicle away from the pumps is a job for attendants to help with, whichever Birkby forecourt you're on, the Shell included. On that drive, the vehicle stays just as it is.

What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

Not your engine but the exhaust is where AdBlue is meant to go. Its own tank keeps it, and from there it is fed into your exhaust, where it cleans the gas. A fuel pump is not made to take it, and AdBlue was never intended to go through one.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, after tipped in, won't. The behaviour is nothing like diesel's. It's heavier than diesel, so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of the tank, which is where the pickup pulls fuel from. Simplest of all: one that got AdBlue in Hillhouse overnight and hasn't been started since. The liquid waits at the base of that tank, untouched — but it would be first through once your motor runs, before any diesel at all.

It does two kinds of harm from there. As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps running on the parts it gets to for as long as it remains there. If the AdBlue is in the lines, leaving it overnight in Birkby leaves things worse. In that tank alone, waiting does nothing. The water in it does harm of its own: the high-pressure pump and the injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Birkby

AdBlue in a diesel: why it's frequently worse than petrol

Fill a diesel with petrol in error over at the Tesco, and this problem is diluted fuel. Blended into the diesel and sitting unused, it is no threat for now; using your engine does the damage.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid itself is simply the wrong one. Not burning, it cannot just be run through. Crystals and corrosion stay through the following fill, and AdBlue splits again from your diesel, so watering it won't help. Hence the flush matters so much, and trying the engine "to see" costs more here than nearly any other slip — in Norwood Park or the heart of Birkby equally.

The same good news holds as with petrol. Wherever around West Yorkshire your vehicle has stopped, an unstarted motor means the AdBlue yet inside the reservoir: the simplest bit of any fuel system to empty.

How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Birkby?

Many motors put the AdBlue cap beside the diesel cap, now and then behind a single flap, and after dark the two can appear identical. Nobody intends it. Mostly it is never the forecourt: someone picks up a bottle heading home and tips it in outside the house.

The ways it happens are few and familiar. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up occurs in a hurry outside Birkby Infant and Nursery School. After work, a container goes in on a drive near Wheathouse Terrace. Or a driver new to that flap refills the vehicle after dark, stopped in the car park by Armitage Arms.

It happens most in the cars people know least: a hire car, a new car, a company car, or the second car of a household with one diesel and one petrol. An identical slip, same first response — leave it off — wherever you are in Birkby or the remainder of West Yorkshire.

Birkby: started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

The AdBlue has left your tank, then. Through the fuel filter, along the lines, and — with any running time — into the high-pressure pump and every injector: that's how far it travels.

Maybe returning from Norman Park, or part way across Birkby, the engine may run rough, smoke, drop pace, flash your dash or stall. Once safe, pull over and switch it off — without restarting to test. More of it is pulled through with each start.

On the M62, under 3 miles from Birkby, the first junction is where to leave, and anywhere sensible is where to stop — not carrying on.

Hopping across Birkby to the car park by St Cuthbert is one thing; driving towards Bradford, under 10 miles away, is something else, because every mile carries the AdBlue further in. So distance counts. Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

Once the motor has been run, the flush includes more, and all of it is done where the vehicle has come to a stop. Noticed soon, it very rarely leaves lasting damage.

Emptying AdBlue in a diesel in Birkby: what it takes

Wherever it has stopped in Birkby — a forecourt, a lay-by, a drive, a road by Masjid Omar — the van travels to your car. Three answers decide the work, and so first our technicians ask what went in, about what quantity, and if your motor has run.

The polluted diesel and the urea come out together after the tank is emptied, on the spot. With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, flushing matters: the fuel system is flushed right through since what remains won't flush out unaided. Your filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested. The majority of these jobs are a half-hour job once our engineers arrive, provided the motor has not run. Our equipment is explosion-proof, so a live filling station is no issue, and it's quiet enough for a residential street late at night.

The last step is to bleed the fuel system on new diesel. Starting it comes next, and then you head off from where the vehicle is parked, at Huddersfield or on a driveway around Birkby. The check before we head off is that it runs properly on fresh diesel. No garage is needed at any stage, with the entire job done on the spot. You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report afterwards, which is what insurers want.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Birkby: the cost of fixing it

Each job is different, and so no fixed price would be fair. Three things shift the cost: whether your engine has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue went in, and where the vehicle is. That last one rests on whether our van can get to it safely, and an open drive is easier than a tight gap behind Fartown War Memorial.

That is why every call from Birkby starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what was put in, how much, and if it has run. The replies turn a range into a straight quote.

Before anyone heads out, you are told our quote on the phone. And you pay on the day, card or over the phone, with nothing in advance. Check your insurance whilst we are on the way: plenty include misfuelling cover.
