Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Bishopton: Why It Happens

Stop reading for a moment if your diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, then ring 0333 366 0103. A drain and a full flush, done just where your vehicle sits in Bishopton, is usually all it needs if found before your engine runs. If you're reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it does not.

Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel car

Not one liquid but two: that is what plenty of newer diesels near Bishopton and Stratford-upon-Avon carry, with diesel feeding your engine. Your exhaust, not your engine, is where AdBlue goes: sprayed into the fumes to clean them, from its own tank.

There is a filler on each tank. Under one flap, next to each other: that's the layout on a lot of cars. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler sits under the bonnet or in the boot instead. Diesel gets filled at each forecourt call-out, week in, week out. Rarely topped up, AdBlue normally comes out of a bottle, poured by someone who must stop and think which filler it needs. That gap is where the error lives.

How AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs around Bishopton

Carelessness seldom explains it. What does is three things lining up together.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out completely, the vehicle goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off St Peters Way before work, or in the car park outside Yard of Ale on the way home.

The old car's cap is where your hand reaches — but a rental car, a new motor or a company car keeps the fillers somewhere else. That is the second factor: a new vehicle.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the pour once it has started. The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Bishopton or out in Lower Clopton.

Flushing a diesel fuel system after AdBlue, Bishopton

The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Be it a Bishopton forecourt or a drive out in Pathlow, take a couple of seconds over these before anything goes in.

  • Check the cap rather than going by where it sits: AdBlue ones are often blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally are not.
  • Look at the size: the smaller neck is, on plenty of motors, the AdBlue one.
  • Open the flap and look for a label — many motors mark what goes in each inlet right there.
  • In your boot or under the bonnet: that is where the filler is if it's not by your diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.
  • The person who drove the car last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park at Stratford-upon-Avon Parkway, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

For the day the light appears — wherever you are across Warwickshire — a routine to use.

  • Pull in somewhere level, motor off, with time in hand — never rushing on the side of Bishopton Way.
  • Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after you find the AdBlue filler and read it. Daft, yes, yet it does the trick.
  • If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the car on.
  • Finish once your tank fills or the bottle is empty; before that, pour gently through the built-in spout.
  • Only then, start the car: close the cap, check once more, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Find during the second or third stage that AdBlue went in the diesel tank? That is where you stop. Leave out step five altogether.

AdBlue in the diesel tank already, in Bishopton?

The short order of things, starting with not starting the engine. The fuel pump starts on many diesels as soon as your ignition is switched on — so leave it off. Diluting it with more diesel fails, since AdBlue sinks to the bottom rather than mixing — and that's where the fuel is sucked from.

On a forecourt — Tesco, Texaco or any other — the attendants will normally help push your car away, when you ask. Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive in Bishopton.

If the motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off. Come off the M40 — under 10 miles out of Bishopton — at the next junction. Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Coventry, under 25 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Bishopton.

Bishopton: what occurs when our engineers arrive

Our engineers come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside Bishopton Primary School, near Bruce Bairnsfather or on your own drive. The answers decide this work and the price, so we ask what got in, roughly how much, and if it has run. That price comes over the phone, before any van leaves.

The system is then cleaned thoroughly, once the tank is cleared. Unlike petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and eats at certain fuel-system metals, and neither clears away unaided. That is why it matters more. The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the car is tested. We don't go until it has been fired up and is running properly.

Most jobs are done in about half an hour once our engineers get there, as long as the motor hasn't run — and the pumps our engineers use are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet after dark outside a house. Payment happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the documents an insurer wants: an engineer report and a VAT invoice. Wrong-fuel cover is included in plenty of insurance policies — so use the wait to look at yours.
