Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Bisley: Why It Happens

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? Then set this page down a moment, keep your ignition and engine off, and phone 0333 366 0103. A drain plus a full flush, carried out right where your car stands in Bisley, is normally what it needs when caught before the motor runs. Nothing happened yet? Below, the rest of the page explains the why it takes place and the ways to prevent it for good.

AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank

Plenty of modern diesels in West End, like those in Bisley, run on two liquids; your motor gets just the diesel. Its own tank keeps it, and from there it is sent to your exhaust, where a spray treats the fumes.

Separate tanks, different fillers. Some motors put the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; a lot more have the two together behind one flap. At the petrol pump, the diesel side is topped up constantly. Much less commonly, the AdBlue side gets filled — normally from a bottle, by someone working out where it goes. The mistake lives in that gap.

How AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs in Bisley

It's seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a warning from the car, and letting it run dry leads to limp mode — so a rushed top-up, maybe before work off Arethusa Way, perhaps outside The Hen and Chickens on the way home after work.

The old car's filler is where the hand goes — yet a rental car, a new motor or a company car keeps the fillers elsewhere. That is a second factor: an unfamiliar motor.

A spout-topped bottle finds no resistance at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the tip, once begun, keeps on. The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Bisley or out in Lucas Green.

Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Before you tip anything, whether on a driveway in Donkey Town or a forecourt in Bisley, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

  • Where it sits can mislead; the cap does not. AdBlue ones are often blue or bear the name "AdBlue" — diesel caps normally don't.
  • Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on many vehicles, the AdBlue one.
  • Check inside the fuel flap: plenty of cars carry a label there showing which fuel goes where.
  • The handbook shows where it is if the filler isn't next to the diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.
  • Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Brookwood.

How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around Surrey that is.

  • Not in a rush on the side of Portway, not on a slope, not with your motor running: park then switch off properly.
  • Locate the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and say the name "AdBlue" out loud while unscrewing it. It sounds daft. It does the trick.
  • Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.
  • Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.
  • Close the cap and check once more. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you've already poured into the diesel side. Don't go on to stage five.

Put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Bisley already?

Short list, then. First: your engine stays off. The fuel pump runs on plenty of diesels the moment the ignition goes on — so keep it off. Don't top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel is pulled from.

The attendants at Esso, BP or another forecourt will normally help to push the vehicle clear when you ask. Leave it where it is if you're on your own driveway in Bisley.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if your motor has already run. On the M3, under 3 miles from Bisley, that means the next junction. About how far did it go? Crossing Bisley is smaller a job than a run of under 50 miles to Westminster, and so say.

What happens when our engineers get there in Bisley

Our technicians come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Bisley CofE Primary School, near Bisley War Memorial or on your own driveway. Both the work and our price depend on three answers — what fluid, which quantity, and whether it has run — so our technicians ask. You get that price by phone, before anybody heads out.

The system is then rinsed thoroughly, after that tank is cleared. Much more than with petrol, it counts with AdBlue: the crystals build up, some metals corrode, and none of that washes out unaided, no matter how long it is left. The filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested. We don't leave until it has been started and is running properly.

If the motor hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night. Your insurer will ask for an engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and you get both once the job is done. Payment comes on the day, with no deposit. Before we get there, take a look at your policy; plenty carry cover for misfuelling.
