Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Black Corner: Why It Happens

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? Then set this page aside for now, leave your ignition and motor off, then phone 0333 366 0103. Caught before your engine runs, it is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Black Corner. If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it does not.

AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank

No single liquid but two: that's how many newer diesels around Black Corner and Fernhill run, with diesel feeding your engine. Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into the exhaust stream and cleans it.

Each tank comes with a filler of its own. Other vehicles put the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; plenty more have both together under one flap. At the pump, your diesel side gets filled all the time. A driver who has to stop and think where it goes usually fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less regularly. That gap is where the mistake lives.

Black Corner: how AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs

Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things coincide.

On a driveway off Steers Lane before work, or in the car park at The Parson's Pig heading home: that's where the rushed top-up happens. Why the rush? As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and once it is empty, limp mode kicks in.

Next, the hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old vehicle — because a rental car, a new motor or a company car places the fillers somewhere your last one did not.

A spouted bottle meets no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, once begun, keeps on. The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Black Corner or out in Forge Wood.

The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Whether a Black Corner forecourt or a drive out in Copthorne, take a couple of seconds over these before anything goes in.

  • The cap. The AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally isn't. Read it instead of going by position.
  • Many cars give AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.
  • The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Many vehicles say there which fuel goes where.
  • Cannot find it beside your diesel filler? In that case check beneath the bonnet or inside your boot — the handbook says where.
  • The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park outside Gatwick Airport, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

For the day the warning comes on — anywhere you are in West Sussex — a simple routine to follow.

  • Not in a rush on the side of Watersfield Road, not on a slope, not with the motor running: park then switch off properly.
  • Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it does the trick.
  • Both behind a single flap? Then confirm the cap on the diesel filler stays shut ahead of raising the bottle.
  • Stop once your tank is topped up or the bottle runs dry; before that, tip gently using its own spout.
  • Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there. Stage five stays out.

Put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Black Corner already?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start the motor. Leave your ignition off as well, because on plenty of diesels it by itself starts your pump. AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is pulled from — so don't top up with diesel to dilute it.

If you are on a forecourt, whether it is the Texaco or the Tesco, ask the attendants to help roll your car clear of the petrol pump. If you are on your own driveway around Black Corner, leave it where it sits.

If your engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off. Black Corner lies under a mile from the M23; there, take the first exit. Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Brighton and Hove, under 25 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Black Corner.

When we arrive in Black Corner, what occurs?

By Forge Wood Primary School, near Forge Wood Community Center or on your own drive: wherever the car has stopped, our technicians come to it. Both the work and our price rest on three answers — which fluid, what quantity, and if it has run — so we ask. During the phone call itself, you hear the quote — ahead of anything else.

After that: draining, then a thorough flush of the entire system. With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own. The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested. Then we fire it up and confirm it runs smoothly before we leave.

Most jobs are done in about half an hour once we get there, provided your engine has not run — and the pumps our technicians use are fine on a live forecourt yet quiet after dark outside a house. Payment happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork your insurer wants: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice. Wrong-fuel cover is included in many insurance policies — and so make use of the wait to look at yours.
