AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Black Moor? Don't Start It

Engine off, ignition off: that is where you begin if AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank. Water with urea mixed in it: that is AdBlue. The trouble begins once it's pulled through your pump — it will not burn, and it will not combine with diesel. If the motor has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally emptied and thoroughly purged where the vehicle sits in Black Moor. Before you do anything else, phone 0333 366 0103.

Black Moor, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do straight away

Things to do:

  • Remove your keys, and that stops someone switching the electrics on.
  • If you are anywhere near moving traffic, put your hazards on.
  • Hold on to the receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what got in and roughly how much.
  • Call right where you are. Quote a LS17 7 postcode or the closest street name, and nobody has to hunt for you.

Things not to do:

  • Moving the vehicle just a few yards is no reason to start your engine.
  • Do not switch the ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • Don't top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue does not mix in diesel; it separates out.
  • Never drive it anywhere, not even a short stretch up Buck Stone Gardens.
  • No emptying it yourself, at all, on the roadside.

The staff working at any Black Moor forecourt — the BP among them — will normally lend a hand pushing it clear if you ask. If you are on your own drive, leave the vehicle precisely where it is.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not the motor. Kept in a separate tank, it is injected into the exhaust stream to clean the fumes. A fuel pump is not made to take it, and AdBlue was never intended to travel through one.

It doesn't blend. After it's tipped into a tank of diesel, AdBlue acts not at all like fuel. It drops, since it is denser than diesel, and settles down where the intake takes its fuel from. When the system runs, the AdBlue is top of the list to be pulled through. Until then it sits beneath the diesel, which is why a vehicle filled in Alwoodley yesterday and never switched on stays the simple case, provided no one touches the key.

From there it does two kinds of damage. What remains when the water evaporates is urea, which turns into crystals: they settle in narrow channels and clog filters. On top of that, it attacks some metals in a fuel system, and keeps going till it is flushed out. Pipes holding AdBlue spell damage by morning for a vehicle sitting around Black Moor. Just in the tank, it stays the same. Diesel lubricates the injection pump and each injector as it passes; water gives no lubrication, which is a separate form of damage.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Black Moor

Why is AdBlue in a diesel regularly the bigger fault?

Put petrol in a diesel at the Asda and you have a problem of thin fuel. Mixed into your diesel and sitting unused, it is harmless at that stage; running your engine is the damage.

The issue with AdBlue in a diesel is a totally wrong substance. It cannot just be run through, since it doesn't burn. Deposits and corrosion remain through the next tankful, and AdBlue separates again out of your diesel, so watering it can't help. That is why the flush counts more, and trying the engine "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than nearly any other slip — in Adel East Moor or the centre of Black Moor equally.

With AdBlue, the good news is no distinct from petrol. If the engine hasn't run, the AdBlue is still inside the tank, and that tank is the easiest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever around West Yorkshire the car is sitting.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Black Moor

Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on plenty of vehicles rests right next to your diesel filler, occasionally under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light. Usually it's not the forecourt: someone picks up a container heading home and tips it in at home.

The ways it happens are few and familiar. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up takes place in a hurry outside St Paul's Catholic Primary School, a Voluntary Academy. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off King Lane. Otherwise, after dark outside Moortown Social Club, your car is refilled by someone opening that flap for the first time.

Rented cars, brand-new cars, company vehicles, or the spare car in a home with one of each: the least known vehicles see it most. Wherever you're in Black Moor or the remainder of West Yorkshire, it is the same slip and the same first answer: leave the car off.

Started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank around Black Moor?

Then the tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. Via your filter, through the pipework, and — given any running — into the injection pump and each injector: that's where it travels.

Maybe coming back from Alwoodley Village Green, or part way across Black Moor, your engine might go rough, smoke, drop power, light up your dash or cut out. When safe, stop and switch it off — with no restarting to test. Each start pulls more of it through.

On the A58(M), under 5 miles from Black Moor, the next junction is where to exit, and anywhere safe is where to park — not carrying on.

Hopping across Black Moor to the car park by St Paul's Roman Catholic Church is one matter; driving towards Leeds, under 5 miles away, is another, because each mile carries the AdBlue deeper in. So distance matters. Tell us roughly how far it had come.

Our engineers do all of the flushing where the vehicle has come to a stop, and once your engine has been run there is more of it. Noticed quickly, it very rarely leaves permanent damage.

Black Moor: how AdBlue is drained from a diesel

Wherever it has stopped in Black Moor — a filling station, a lay-by, a drive, a road beside Moortown RUFC — our van travels to your car. Before anything else our engineers ask what got in, about how much, and whether your motor has been run, since those answers settle the work.

Right there, the tank is then emptied, and both the polluted diesel and the urea come out as one. With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, flushing matters: the fuel system is flushed all the way through because what remains will not flush out by itself. Fresh diesel goes in once the filter is flushed — or replaced, if it needs to be — and after that the vehicle is tested. Roughly half an hour once we arrive is usual for most jobs when your motor hasn't run. Low-noise enough to use outside a house at night, and fine on a busy forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

New diesel goes in to prime the system, and that is the last step. You drive off as soon as our technicians have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether the car is on a drive in Black Moor or in a bay outside Headingley. Our engineers make sure it runs smoothly on new diesel before we go. As the job is done in full where the car is, a garage never comes into it. You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report afterwards, which is what insurers ask for.

A mobile service fits Black Moor, a residential suburb: there's no need to take your car to us, since our engineers empty it on the spot, on a drive, a side street, a car park or a forecourt.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Black Moor?

Not one flat figure could be fair, since each job is different. The cost moves first with how long, if at all, your engine has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that went in. After that it turns on where the car is and whether our van can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight space behind Alwoodley Park Methodist Church.

Before a figure, not afterwards, every call from Black Moor begins with the same three checks: the liquid, the quantity, and whether it ran. Those answers turn a range into a straight quote.

Priced by phone before the engineer heads out, it is settled on the day — card or phone, no deposit. Misfuelling cover is part of many insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van arrives.
