Blackamoor: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

If AdBlue has got into the diesel tank, keep the engine off and keep your ignition off. Urea dissolved in water is all AdBlue is. As it is water-based, it will not ignite and never combines with diesel; damage only starts once your pump starts drawing it. If the engine hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally drained and carefully cleaned where the car stands in Blackamoor. Phone 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

Blackamoor, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do straight away

Do these:

  • Keys out — then nobody can switch anything on.
  • Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere near.
  • So you can give us which liquid it was and about what quantity, save the till receipt or the empty bottle.
  • The van finds you quickest with a postcode starting BB1 2, or simply the name of a street close by, and so phone from the spot.

Not to do:

  • Moving your vehicle even a few yards is no reason to start your motor.
  • Don't switch the ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • Don't top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue does not dilute in diesel; it separates out.
  • Keep it where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short stretch down Pickering Fold.
  • No draining it yourself, either, at the roadside.

The attendants on duty at any Blackamoor forecourt — the Texaco among them — will normally lend a hand rolling it clear if you ask. If you're on your own drive, leave it just where it sits.

What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

The motor isn't what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is. From a dedicated reservoir it goes directly to your exhaust, treating what your engine emits. A fuel pump is not designed to cope with it, and AdBlue was never intended to go through one.

Inside a diesel tank it acts very differently from fuel. It does not mix in. It's heavier than diesel, so it sinks and collects at the bottom of your tank, which is where the pickup draws fuel from. When the pump runs, the AdBlue is top of the list to be pulled through. Until then it sits beneath your diesel, which is how a car topped up in Higher Croft last night and not switched on remains the straightforward case, provided nobody touches the key.

It does two kinds of damage from there. As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps labouring on the parts it hits for as long as it stays there. By daybreak, a car sitting around Blackamoor with AdBlue through its pipework grows worse; if it is just inside that tank, nothing changes. The water in it causes damage of its own: the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is regularly worse

Put petrol in a diesel at the EG On the Move and you have an issue of thin fuel. Blended into the diesel and left unused, it is harmless for now; using your engine is the harm.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid as such is plainly the wrong one. Not burning, it cannot simply be run through. Whether the vehicle is in Whinny Heights or the heart of Blackamoor, turning it over "to see" costs more in this case than nearly any other slip, and the flush counts more. The reasons: it will not stay blended, so diluting it is impossible; and crystals and corrosion outlast the following fill.

With AdBlue, the good news is no separate from petrol. Emptying a tank is the simplest job on any fuel system, and without running, the AdBlue stays in it — anywhere around Lancashire your car sits.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Blackamoor

It is not deliberate. Many cars have the AdBlue inlet alongside the diesel inlet, occasionally under one flap, and mixing them up is easy after dark. Most of the time it happens with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the forecourt.

It tends to occur in a few familiar ways. The top-up is rushed outside St James' Church of England Primary School, because your dash flashed with a warning while the kids were dropped off. Close to Wisteria Drive, someone tips a bottle in on the drive after work. Or the car is topped up in the car park outside King Edward VII, in poor light, by a person who has never opened that flap before.

Rented motors, new cars, fleet cars, or the spare car in a home with one of each: the least known vehicles see it most. Wherever you are in Blackamoor or the rest of Lancashire, it is the same error and the same first answer: leave the vehicle off.

Already started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Blackamoor?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer in the tank. Through the fuel filter, through the lines, and — given any running time — into the injection pump and every injector: that's where it travels.

You may see the engine running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, possibly on the way back from Polyphemus Wood or halfway across Blackamoor. No starting it again to check: pull over when safe, then switch it off. With each start, more of it is pulled through.

On the M65, under a mile from Blackamoor, the next junction is where to exit, and anywhere safe is where to stop — not driving on.

How far it went counts. A few hundred yards across Blackamoor to the car park by St James is a very different job from a run towards Preston, under 15 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the fuel system with every mile. Tell us roughly how far it had come.

Our engineers do all of the cleaning where the car has stopped, and once the engine has been started there is more of it. When it's caught early, lasting damage is very rare.

What clearing AdBlue from a diesel involves around Blackamoor

The car remains put, whether that is a road beside Roman Road Library, a driveway, a layby or a forecourt in Blackamoor, and our van comes to it. Three replies decide the job, and so before anything else our engineers ask what got in, about the amount, and if the engine has turned over.

The contaminated diesel and the urea come out as one after that tank is drained, on the spot. A careful flush counts much more after AdBlue than after petrol, because residue won't wash out by itself. After that, your filter: cleaned, or changed if it must be. Then fresh diesel, and then a test of your vehicle. Engine not run? In that case count on roughly half an hour once we are there for most jobs. Our pumping gear is explosion-proof, and so a live forecourt is no issue, and it is quiet enough for a residential street after dark.

Fresh diesel goes in to bleed the fuel system, and that is the last step. You drive off as soon as our engineers have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether your car is on a driveway in Blackamoor or in a bay outside Darwen. Our technicians confirm it runs smoothly on fresh diesel before leaving. The entire job is done where your car is, so it never needs to be taken to a workshop. You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report later, which is what insurers want.

Blackamoor: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Not one single figure would be fair, since each job differs. What changes the price is, firstly, whether your engine has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue was put in; and finally where the car is and whether our van can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight gap behind Our Lady of Perpetual Succour Church.

Before a quote, not after, every call from Blackamoor begins with the same three questions: the liquid, the quantity, plus whether it ran. When they are known, a range becomes a single fixed number.

You get that quote by phone, before anybody sets off, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront. Misfuelling cover is part of plenty of insurance policies, so it pays to look at yours before the van arrives.
