AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Blackley? Keep It Switched Off

AdBlue in the diesel tank? Then leave your engine off — and your ignition as well. AdBlue is urea mixed in water. The trouble starts once it is sucked through the pump — it won't ignite, and it will not combine with diesel. If your engine hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally emptied and thoroughly purged where your car stands around Blackley. Nothing comes before ringing 0333 366 0103.

Blackley, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do right away

To do:

  • So nobody can switch your ignition on, take your keys away.
  • If you're at all near moving traffic, put the hazards on.
  • Hold on to the till receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what went in and about how much.
  • Call just where you are. Quote a HX5 0 postcode or the nearest street sign, and no one has to hunt for you.

Things not to do:

  • Do not start the engine, even for a moment to move your car.
  • Don't switch the ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • Do not top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue does not dilute in diesel; it separates out.
  • Leave the car where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short distance along Blackley Road.
  • By the road, don't try draining it on your own.

Moving the vehicle off the island is a job for attendants to help with, whichever Blackley forecourt you are on, the Crossleys Garage included. Stopped on your own drive? Then it remains just where it is.

AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Not the engine but your exhaust is where AdBlue is meant to go. From a dedicated reservoir it is fed straight to the exhaust, treating what the engine lets out. Nothing inside a fuel pump is made for this liquid — and no part of it was intended to go that way.

Inside a diesel tank it acts really differently from fuel. It does not mix in. The intake takes fuel from the lowest part of that tank, and that is precisely where AdBlue ends up: as it is denser than diesel, it sinks. A vehicle topped up on a drive in Heathfield yesterday evening and left unstarted counts as the straightforward case. Nothing has pulled the AdBlue up so far — but once your engine turns, that is what is pulled first, straight from the bottom of your tank.

It causes two kinds of damage from there. As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps labouring on the parts it reaches for as long as it stays there. Pipes holding AdBlue mean harm by morning for a vehicle parked around Blackley. Only in the tank, it stays the same. Diesel lubricates the injection pump and each injector as it flows; water offers none of that, which is a separate kind of damage.

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is commonly worse

Petrol pumped into a diesel on The co-operative's forecourt makes your fuel watery — that is the whole fault. Blended into your diesel and left unused, it is harmless at that stage; using your engine is the damage.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a totally wrong liquid. It can't simply be run through, since it doesn't burn. It doesn't stay mixed, and so it can't be weakened. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the engine "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether the car is in Jagger Green or the middle of Blackley.

As with petrol, there is good news. If your engine has not run, the AdBlue is still in the tank, and the tank is the easiest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever across West Yorkshire the car is sitting.

Blackley: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

Plenty of cars put the AdBlue filler alongside the diesel one, now and then behind a single flap, and after dark the two may appear identical. No one intends it. Most of the time it occurs with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the pump.

The ways it occurs are few and familiar. Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside Cross Lane Primary and Nursery School the refill is rushed. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Lindley Road. One more version: darkness, the car park by The Golden Fleece, and a driver opening that flap for the first time.

It crops up most in a rental, a new car, a company vehicle, or the spare vehicle in a home with one of each fuels — the vehicles drivers use the least. Wherever you're around Blackley or the remainder of West Yorkshire, it is the same error and the same first answer: leave it off.

Blackley: started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer inside your tank. It's been drawn through the fuel filter and the fuel lines, and if the motor ran for any time, it has got to the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel injectors.

Watch for lumpy running, exhaust smoke, lost power, warnings on the dash, or a stall — returning from Ainley Round Wood, perhaps, or part way across Blackley. Stop when safe. Turn off. Leave the car off instead of restarting it to check. More of that is pulled through with each start.

On the M62, under a mile from Blackley, the next junction is where to exit, and anywhere safe is where to park — not carrying on.

Mileage matters: each mile pushes the AdBlue further in, and so driving towards Bradford, under 10 miles away, gives a much larger job than hopping across Blackley to the car park by Blackley Baptist. Tell us roughly how far it had come.

Our technicians do all of the cleaning where the vehicle has stopped, and once your engine has been started there is more of it. Very seldom does it leave long-term damage when it is spotted soon.

Blackley: how AdBlue is drained from a diesel

The car remains put, whether that's a street near All Saints Church, a drive, a lay-by or a filling station around Blackley, and our van comes to it. Before anything else our technicians ask what went in, about how much, and if the motor has been run, since those answers decide this work.

The polluted diesel and the urea leave as one after your tank is emptied, right there. A full flush counts much more with AdBlue than with petrol, because residue will not wash away by itself. After that, the fuel filter: flushed, or changed when it must be. Then clean diesel, and then a check of the car. Not run? Then expect roughly half an hour once we are there for most jobs. Explosion-proof pumps mean a live forecourt safe to work on, and they're quiet enough to spare the street at night.

New diesel goes in to prime the fuel system, and that's the last step. Firing it up comes next, and then you drive off from where the car is parked, outside Huddersfield or on a driveway around Blackley. It's tested on new diesel to be sure it runs correctly before our engineers head off. No garage is needed at any stage, with the entire job done then and there. Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both afterwards.

AdBlue drains around Blackley and across West Yorkshire

AdBlue jobs around Blackley go to teams that cover the places around it — Rosemount, Elland plus Old Lindley — and most of West Yorkshire beyond, across HX postcodes. Phone and check instead of guessing if you are by a county line, or anywhere tricky to explain.

A van that comes to you fits Blackley, a rural hamlet: you have no need to bring the car to us, since our technicians drain it there, in a driveway, a side street, a car park or a filling station.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Blackley: the cost of fixing it

Each job is different, so not one fixed quote would be honest. What changes the price is, firstly, whether the engine has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue went in; and after that where your car is and whether a van can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight space behind Haigh Cross.

With that in mind, every call from Blackley begins with the identical trio — which fluid went in, what quantity, whether the engine ran — before any quote. Their replies shrink the range right down to one figure.

You get that quote on the phone, before anybody heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront. Look at your policy whilst we're on the way: many carry misfuelling cover.
