AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Bleadon? Don't Start It

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, your ignition remains off and so does the engine. Urea dissolved in water is all AdBlue is. Unlike fuel, it neither burns nor blends, and nothing happens till your engine sucks it through. If the motor has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally emptied and thoroughly flushed where the vehicle stands in Bleadon. Before anything, phone us on 0333 366 0103.

AdBlue in your diesel tank in Bleadon: the first few minutes

Do:

  • Keys out — then nobody can power anything on.
  • Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere close.
  • The empty bottle or the till receipt shows us the product and the quantity, so don't bin it out.
  • The van finds you fastest with a postcode starting BS24 0, or simply the name of a street nearby, and so call from the car.

Not to do:

  • Shifting the car just a few yards is no reason to fire up the motor.
  • Plenty of diesels run their pump the instant your ignition goes on, and so leave the car off.
  • Do not top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue does not mix in diesel; it separates out.
  • Never drive the vehicle anywhere, not even a short distance up Rectory Lane.
  • Do not try to drain the vehicle yourself at the kerbside.

Moving your vehicle away from the pumps is a job for staff to help with, wherever Bleadon forecourt you're on, the Esso included. On that drive, your car remains exactly where it is.

What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

The engine isn't what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is. Its own tank keeps it, and from there it's sprayed into the exhaust, where it cleans the fumes. Not one side suits the other: urea doesn't belong in an injection pump, and a pump cannot deal with urea.

Inside a diesel tank it acts really differently from fuel. It does not mix in. It sinks, because it's heavier than diesel, and settles low where the pickup takes its fuel from. Simplest of all: one that had AdBlue in Shiplate last night and hasn't turned since. The liquid waits at the base of your tank, undrawn — but it will be first through if the motor runs, before any diesel at all.

It does two kinds of harm from there. What remains once the water goes is urea, which turns into crystals: they lodge in narrow channels and clog filters. Worse, it eats at certain metals in the fuel system, and keeps going till it's cleared out. Overnight, a car parked around Bleadon with AdBlue in its lines grows worse; if it's only inside that tank, nothing changes. And there is the water: it brings no lubrication to the parts that need it the most — the injection pump and each injector.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Bleadon

Why is AdBlue in a diesel commonly the bigger fault?

Put petrol in a diesel at the another forecourt nearby and you have a problem of thin fuel. Mixed into your diesel and sitting still, it is no threat at that stage; using the motor is the harm.

AdBlue in a diesel is an issue of the wrong substance altogether. Because it doesn't burn, running it through is not an option. Whether your vehicle is in Batch or the heart of Bleadon, turning it over "to see" does more harm in this case than nearly any other error, and the flush counts for more. The reasons: it won't remain mixed, so diluting it fails; and deposits and corrosion outlast the following tankful.

The same good news holds as with petrol. Clearing a tank is the easiest job on any fuel system, and without start-up, the AdBlue remains in it — wherever across Somerset the vehicle has stopped.

Bleadon: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

It is not deliberate. Many cars have the AdBlue cap beside the diesel inlet, now and then behind one flap, and mixing them up is simple after dark. Usually it is never the filling station: someone buys a bottle driving home and pours it in at home.

A couple of familiar ways cover the majority of them. The refill is rushed outside Oldmixon Primary School, because the dash flashed with a warning while the children were taken off. In the evening, a container is tipped in on a drive close to Shiplate Road. Or someone unfamiliar with that flap refills the car after dark, stopped in the car park outside Queens Arms.

It occurs most in the motors people know least: a hire car, a new car, a company car, or the second motor of a household with one diesel and one petrol. Wherever you're around Bleadon or the remainder of Somerset, it is the same error and the same first answer: leave the car off.

Bleadon: started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then the AdBlue has left your tank. Via the fuel filter, along the lines, and — with any running — into the high-pressure pump and each injector: that is how far it travels.

Lumpy running, smoke from the exhaust, dropping power, dashboard warnings or cutting out: any may appear, perhaps midway across Bleadon or returning from Bleadon Hill Golf Course. No starting it again to check: stop once safe, then turn it off. Each start pulls more of that through.

Leave the M5, under 3 miles from Bleadon, by the first junction and park somewhere safe, not carrying on.

Each mile pushes the AdBlue deeper in. That's why a hop across Bleadon to park near St Peter & St Paul and a drive of under 15 miles for Wells are such different jobs. Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

Once the motor has been started, the flush includes more, and all of it is done where the car has come to a stop. Very seldom does it leave permanent damage if it's caught soon.

What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Bleadon?

Anywhere it has stopped around Bleadon — a forecourt, a layby, a drive, a road by ROC Post Bleadon — our van comes to the car. Three replies decide the job, so before anything else our technicians ask what got in, roughly what quantity, plus whether your motor has turned over.

The polluted diesel and the urea leave as one after the tank is emptied, right there. Your system is purged thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own. A test of the vehicle comes at the end, after fresh diesel goes in and the filter gets cleaned or, if necessary, replaced. The majority of these jobs are a half-hour visit once our engineers get there, provided the motor has not run. Quiet enough to use outside a house at night, and safe on a busy forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

Fresh diesel goes in to prime the system, and that's the final step. At that point we start the engine and you head off, whether from a parking space outside Weston-Super-Mare or a driveway around Bleadon. Before leaving, our engineers make sure it is running smoothly with fresh diesel in. We do it all wherever the car has stopped, and it never needs to go to a garage. At the end, you are given the paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice plus a written report from the engineer.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Bleadon

There's no honest single price, because the jobs aren't the same. What shifts the price is, first, whether the motor has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue got in; and then where the car is and whether a technician can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight spot behind Mendip RC Raceway.

For that in mind, every enquiry from Bleadon opens by asking the identical trio — what was put in, what quantity, if it ran — ahead of a figure. When those are answered, a range turns into one firm figure.

You hear that price on the phone, before anyone heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.
