Why does AdBlue in a diesel motor need its own filler?

Many newer diesels around Greenvale, like those in Bloomfield, run on two liquids; the engine gets just the diesel. Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into the exhaust stream and cleans it.

There's a filler for each tank. Plenty of vehicles share a single flap for both, while some move the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet. Filling your diesel side at the pump goes on all the time. A driver who has to stop and think where it goes usually fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less commonly. The mistake grows in the gap between them.

How AdBlue in your diesel tank happens in Bloomfield

Carelessness rarely causes it. Instead is three things coming up at once.

Hurry comes from the warning. The vehicle tells you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank puts it into limp mode — so the top-up happens quickly, before work on a drive off Bloomfield Road, or heading home in the car park at The Seven Stars.

Unfamiliar motors are next, too. Rentals, new cars and company cars place their fillers differently, and habit goes for the cap it used on the old one.

A spouted bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the tip, after started, carries on. The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Bloomfield or out in Timsbury.

Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Look at these before pouring, at a forecourt in Bloomfield or a driveway over in Hook. Seconds, no more.

  • Position can mislead; the cap doesn't. AdBlue caps tend to be blue or carry the word "AdBlue" — diesel caps usually do not.
  • Plenty of vehicles fit AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.
  • Open the filler flap and look for a label — plenty of cars mark which belongs in which inlet just there.
  • The handbook. If the filler isn't by the diesel cap, it's in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.
  • Picking up a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park outside Oldfield Park? Ask the person who drove it last before leaving, not when the light comes on.

How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around Somerset that is.

  • Pull in somewhere level, engine off, with time to spare — never hurried on the side of The Glebe.
  • Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.
  • The two behind a single flap? So make sure the lid on your diesel filler is still closed ahead of raising the bottle.
  • Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.
  • Close the cap and check again. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you've already poured into the diesel side. Never go on to stage five.

AdBlue in your diesel tank already, around Bloomfield?

The short order of things, starting with not starting the motor. On many diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so don't switch the car on. Filling up with diesel won't weaken it: instead, AdBlue drops to the base of the tank, right where the fuel is taken from.

Ask the attendants to help push the car clear of the petrol pump if you are at a forecourt — the Murco, the Murco Fual or anywhere else. If you're on your own drive in Bloomfield, leave the car where it sits.

If the motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off. Leave the M32 — under 15 miles out of Bloomfield — at the first junction. Roughly how far did it go? Crossing Bloomfield is smaller work than a trip of under 10 miles towards Bath, and so tell us.

What happens when our technicians arrive around Bloomfield

Anywhere the vehicle came to rest, whether outside St Mary's CofE Primary School, beside Conygre Hall or on your own drive, the van travels to it. The answers settle the work and our price, and so our engineers ask what was put in, about how much, and if it's run. During the call itself, you hear our price — before dispatch.

Emptying that tank comes next, followed by a full flush of the fuel system. AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why that counts more with AdBlue than with petrol. Your filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested. Before we go, we fire it up and make sure that it is running correctly.

Unstarted cars mostly mean a half-hour job from arrival. The kit is fine on a busy forecourt, and hushed enough for a residential street after dark. Your insurer usually wants the engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and both are yours at the end. Payment comes on the day, with no deposit. While we travel, take a look at your policy; plenty carry cover for misfuelling.
