Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

Plenty of modern diesels on the roads round Boroughbridge and Kirby Hill carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the engine. The exhaust, not your engine, is where AdBlue ends up: dosed into the fumes to clean it, from its own tank.

Every tank comes with a filler of its own. Other motors put the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; a lot of others have both side by side under one flap. At the pump, your diesel side gets filled all the time. The AdBlue side is fuelled far less commonly, usually from a bottle, and normally by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes. The slip lives in that gap.

AdBlue in the diesel tank around Boroughbridge: how it occurs

Carelessness seldom causes it. Instead is three things lining up at once.

Hurry follows from the warning. Your car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank puts the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up happens in a rush, before work on a drive off New Row, or on the way home in the car park at Black Bull.

Then your car is unfamiliar. A hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and your hand hits for the cap it would have used on the old one.

A spouted bottle finds no resistance at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. So the tip, once begun, keeps on. Whether it takes place in Langthorpe or the middle of Boroughbridge, it is the same few seconds.

Flushing a diesel fuel system after AdBlue, Boroughbridge

The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

A few seconds is all the checks take — so check them before you pour anything, on a driveway in Minskip or a forecourt in Boroughbridge.

  • Where it sits can mislead; the cap doesn't. AdBlue ones are often blue or bear the word "AdBlue" — diesel ones normally don't.
  • Many cars fit AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.
  • A label inside the fuel flap frequently says which fuel goes where, on many motors. Check for it.
  • Can't find it beside the diesel inlet? In that case check beneath the bonnet or inside the boot — the handbook will say which.
  • The previous driver will know. Ask when you collect a rental or company car — at Knaresborough's car park, perhaps — rather than when the light appears.

AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across North Yorkshire that is.

  • Pull in on level, motor off, with time in hand — never hurried on the side of High Street.
  • Find the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and say the word "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew it. It sounds silly. It works.
  • Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.
  • Gently does it, through the bottle's own spout, until it is full or the bottle runs out.
  • Before you start your car, close the cap and check a second time that your diesel cap never opened off.

Find at stage two or three that it has already gone into your diesel side? Then stop just there. Step five is off limits.

Boroughbridge: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

What follows is a short order of things, beginning with not starting the motor. The fuel pump starts on many diesels the moment your ignition is switched on — and so leave it off. Topping up with diesel will not dilute it: instead, AdBlue drops to the base of the tank, right where the fuel is drawn from.

On a forecourt — the nearest petrol station, Morrisons or any other — the staff will normally help push the vehicle away, when you ask. Leave it where it is if you are on your own driveway in Boroughbridge.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if the motor has already run. The next exit means where to leave if you are on the A1(M), under a mile from Boroughbridge. A short hop across Boroughbridge is a smaller job than a run towards Ripon, under 10 miles away, so tell us about how far it went.

Boroughbridge: what takes place when our engineers turn up

Our technicians come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside Boroughbridge Primary School, near Village Cross or on your own driveway. Both the work and our quote rest on three replies — what fluid, which quantity, and whether it's run — so our engineers ask. No one heads out before you've had the price by phone.

After that: draining, then a thorough flush of the entire system. Not like petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and attacks certain fuel-system metals, and none of that washes out unaided. Hence it matters more. Your filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested. Then our engineers fire it up and make sure it runs smoothly before we leave.

Unrun vehicles usually need a half-hour visit after the moment we arrive. The equipment is fine on a busy forecourt, and hushed enough for a residential street after dark. No money in advance; you settle up that day. At the end, a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer go to you for the insurer. Wrong-fuel cover is part of plenty of insurance policies — and so make use of the wait to look at yours.
