Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Boscoppa: Why It Occurs
If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your motor and your ignition off and call 0333 366 0103. A drain and a thorough flush, carried out just where your vehicle sits in Boscoppa, is normally what it needs if found before the engine runs. If you're reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it doesn't.
AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers
Many modern diesels in Carclaze, as well as Boscoppa, run on two liquids; your motor takes just your diesel. The exhaust, not your engine, is where AdBlue ends up: sprayed into the gas to fresh them, from a separate tank.
Each tank has its own filler. On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet. Diesel gets filled at every forecourt call-out, again and again. A driver who has to stop and work out where it goes normally tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less commonly. The slip lives in that gap.
Boscoppa: how AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs
Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is rarely one of them.
Haste follows from the warning. The car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank sends the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up gets done quickly, before work on a driveway off Brockstone Road, or on the way home in the car park outside The Carlyon Arms.
The old car's filler is where the hand goes — but a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car keeps the fillers somewhere else. That's the second thing: an unfamiliar vehicle.
No part halts the tip once it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits. Sandy Bottom or the middle of Boscoppa: it is the same few seconds either way.
The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart
Look at these before pouring, on a forecourt around Boscoppa or a drive over in Mount Charles. A few seconds, that's all.
- The cap. The AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally is not. Read it instead of going by position.
- Many cars give AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.
- Open the filler flap and check for a label — many cars show which goes in each filler right there.
- The handbook shows where it lives if the filler is not next to your diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.
- Whoever had it before will know. Check as you collect a hire car or fleet car — at St Austell's car park, perhaps — not once the warning appears.
AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank
When the light comes on, wherever in Cornwall, use this routine.
- Pull in somewhere level, engine off, with time to spare — never rushing on the side of Gwel-An-Mor.
- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it works.
- The diesel cap remains on. Where both share a flap, make sure it is shut before lifting the bottle.
- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.
- Before you start the vehicle, shut the cap and look again that your diesel cap was never opened off.
Discover during the second or third step that the bottle went in the diesel filler? That is where you stop. Step five stays off limits.
Boscoppa: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?
Then the order of things is short. Do not start your motor. The fuel pump runs on many diesels the moment the ignition goes on — so leave it off. Don't top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel is drawn from.
If you are on a forecourt, whether it's the Tesco or the Asda, ask the attendants to help roll your car clear of the petrol pump. Leave it where it is if you're on your own driveway in Boscoppa.
Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if your motor has already run. Come off the M5 — over 50 miles out of Boscoppa — at the next junction. A short hop across Boscoppa is a smaller job than a run towards Truro, under 15 miles away, so tell us roughly how far it went.
Our arrival around Boscoppa, and what takes place next
Wherever the vehicle came to rest, be it outside Bishop Bronescombe CofE School, beside Bethel Methodist Church or at home, our van comes to it. What fluid got in, the quantity, and if it ran: we ask because those replies set the work and price. No one heads out before you have heard the quote by phone.
The system is then cleaned thoroughly, once that tank is cleared. AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own — which is why the flush matters more here than with petrol. Testing comes at the end: before that, fresh diesel is added, and the fuel filter is flushed or changed as needed. Next our engineers start it and make sure it runs properly before we go.
With pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs where the engine hasn't run take about half an hour once our engineers are there. You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours while we are on the way.
