Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Boverton: Why It Occurs

Pause here a minute when your diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, and call 0333 366 0103. A drain plus a full flush, carried out right where the car stands around Boverton, is normally what it takes when found before your engine runs. Nothing happened yet? Further down, the rest of the page covers the why it happens and the ways to prevent it altogether.

AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Plenty of newer diesels in Frampton, as well as Boverton, run on two fluids; your motor takes just your diesel. Its own tank keeps it, and from there it goes to your exhaust, and there a spray treats the fumes.

Different tanks, separate fillers. Under one flap, side by side: that's the layout on a lot of vehicles. On others, AdBlue's filler is beneath the bonnet or in the boot instead. At the pump, your diesel side is topped up all the time. Much less often, the AdBlue side is filled — mostly from a bottle, by someone thinking about where it goes. The mistake grows in the gap between the two.

Boverton: how AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place

It's seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a message from the car, and running dry leads to limp mode — hence a hurried top-up, maybe before work off Boverton Road, perhaps outside Boverton Castle on the way home after work.

Next, the hand goes for the cap it knew on the old vehicle — because a hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers somewhere your last one didn't.

A spout-topped bottle finds no resistance at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, once started, carries on. Whether it takes place in Tre-Beferad or the middle of Boverton, it is the same few seconds.

How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Whether a Boverton forecourt or a driveway out in West-end Town, take a couple of seconds over these before anything goes in.

  • Where it sits can mislead; the cap doesn't. AdBlue ones are often blue or carry the word "AdBlue" — diesel ones usually do not.
  • The size. On plenty of motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.
  • A label inside the fuel flap often shows which fuel goes where, on many cars. Look for it.
  • In the boot or under the bonnet: that's where the filler sits if it's not by the diesel cap, and the handbook says which.
  • Picking up a hire or company car, say at the car park at Llantwit Major? Ask whoever drove the vehicle last before leaving, rather than when the light comes on.

Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

On the day the warning comes on — wherever you are around The Vale of Glamorgan — a simple routine to use.

  • Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with your motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Redwood Close.
  • Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it does the trick.
  • The diesel cap stays on. Where both sit under a flap, make sure it's closed before the bottle comes up.
  • Slowly does it, through the bottle's own spout, till it's full or the bottle is empty.
  • Shut the cap, then look once more — confirm the diesel cap remained shut throughout. Only then, start the vehicle.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there. Do not go on to step five.

AdBlue in the diesel tank already, in Boverton?

Do not start the motor: that's how the short order of things begins. Leave your ignition off as well, since on plenty of diesels switching it on alone runs the pump. Thinning it with more diesel won't work, since AdBlue settles to the bottom instead of mixing — and that is where your fuel is drawn from.

If you're on a forecourt, whether it is the Esso or the another forecourt nearby, ask the staff to help push the vehicle away from the pump. Leave it where it is if you're on your own drive around Boverton.

Where your motor has run already, stop somewhere safe and turn it off. Boverton sits under 10 miles from the M4; on it, use the next exit. A short hop across Boverton is a smaller job than a run towards Cardiff, under 15 miles away, so tell us roughly how far it went.

When our technicians arrive in Boverton, what takes place?

Wherever the car has stopped, whether by the local primary school, beside Boverton Castle or at home, the van comes to it. Which fluid got in, the amount, and if it ran: our technicians ask because those replies decide the work and quote. The price comes on the call, ahead of any van leaving.

Then that tank is drained and the fuel system cleaned thoroughly. Unlike petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and attacks certain fuel-system metals, and neither washes away unaided. Hence it matters more. A test is last: before that, fresh diesel goes in, and the filter is cleaned or changed as needed. We do not go until it has been fired up and is running properly.

Using pumps fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs in which your engine has not run need roughly half an hour after we arrive. Your insurer will ask for an engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and both are yours once the job is done. Payment is on the day, with no deposit. While we travel, have a look at your policy; plenty include cover for misfuelling.
