AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Bracebridge? Don't Start It

Engine off, ignition off: that is where you begin if AdBlue has gone into the diesel tank. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water. It doesn't burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the harm it does begins when your fuel system draws it in. If the engine has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually drained and carefully cleaned where the vehicle sits around Bracebridge. No step comes before calling 0333 366 0103.

Those opening minutes: AdBlue in the diesel tank in Bracebridge

Do:

  • Keys out — that way nobody can switch anything on.
  • Near moving traffic? Then put the hazard lights on.
  • Which product, and roughly how much amount? Save the bottle or your receipt, and we will see.
  • Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting LN5 8, or the name of the closest street, brings the van to you without a search.

Not to do:

  • Don't start the motor, even for a moment to shift your car.
  • Plenty of diesels power their fuel pump the instant your ignition goes on, and so leave the vehicle off.
  • Adding more diesel does not help: AdBlue separates out rather than blending.
  • Any driving at all is to be avoided, including a short stretch up Newark Road.
  • Do not try to drain the car yourself by the kerbside.

Get the attendants to help you move your vehicle off the pumps if you're at a forecourt around Bracebridge, whether it is the Esso or somewhere else. If you are on your own drive, leave the vehicle just where it sits.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not your engine. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to fresh it. Neither side suits the other: urea does not belong in an injection pump, and a pump can't take urea.

It doesn't blend. Once it's tipped into the tank, AdBlue acts nothing like diesel. It is heavier than diesel, so it sinks and collects at the bottom of the tank, which is where the pickup draws fuel from. A car filled on a drive in St Catherines overnight and left unstarted counts as the straightforward case. Nothing has sucked the AdBlue up so far — but when the engine runs, that is what goes first, straight from the bottom of the tank.

From there it causes two kinds of harm. What is left once the water goes is urea, which turns into crystals: they lodge in tiny passages and clog filters. Worse, it eats at some metals in a fuel system, and keeps going until it is flushed out. Where the AdBlue has reached the pipework, waiting till morning in Bracebridge makes it worse. Inside that tank alone, time costs nothing. The water in it causes damage of its own: the high-pressure pump and your injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Bracebridge

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is often worse

A problem of thin fuel is what you end up with after fuelling a diesel with petrol at the Sainsbury's. Harm just comes from driving on it. Mixed into your diesel and sitting in the tank, it does none.

AdBlue in a diesel is another problem: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all. Not burning, it can't just be run through. Nor can it be watered down, since it separates again — and the following tankful won't clear away deposits or corrosion. So the flush matters more with AdBlue, and trying your engine "to see", in the centre of Bracebridge or out in Swallow Beck, does more harm than nearly any other slip.

As with petrol, there is good news. Not started? Then the AdBlue waits only inside that tank, the easiest section of the whole system to empty, wherever your vehicle has stopped across Lincolnshire.

Bracebridge: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many motors rests right next to the diesel filler, occasionally under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light. Most of the time it takes place with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the pump.

The ways it takes place are few and familiar. The top-up gets hurried outside Bracebridge Infant and Nursery School, because your dash flashed with a warning as the kids were taken in. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Laurel Close. Otherwise, after dark outside The Plough, your car gets topped up by someone opening that flap for the first time.

It takes place most in the motors motorists know least: a hire car, a new vehicle, a company car, or the second motor of a household with one diesel and one petrol. Wherever you are around Bracebridge or the remainder of Lincolnshire, it's the same slip and the same first answer: leave the car off.

Bracebridge: started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Then your tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. With any running time, it travels to the high-pressure pump and each injector, having passed via your filter and pipework.

Lumpy running, smoke from the exhaust, dropping power, dashboard warnings or cutting out: each may appear, maybe midway across Bracebridge or returning from Bracebridge Fishponds / Syston Woods. No starting it again to test: stop when safe, then turn it off. Every start pulls more of that through.

If you were on the M180, under 25 miles from Bracebridge, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere safe rather than pressing on.

Every mile pushes the AdBlue deeper in. That is why crossing Bracebridge to park beside All Saints and a drive of under 3 miles for Lincoln are such different jobs. Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

Our engineers do all of the flushing where the vehicle has ended up, and once your engine has run there is more of it. Spotted early, it very seldom leaves permanent damage.

What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Bracebridge?

We come to the vehicle, wherever it has stopped around Bracebridge: a side street near Bracebridge Library, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. Before anything else our technicians ask what was put in, about how much, and if the motor has run, because those answers determine the work.

On the spot, the tank is then drained, and both the contaminated diesel and the urea leave at once. With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, the flush matters: the fuel system is cleaned all the way through since residue won't wash away unaided. Clean diesel goes in once your filter is cleaned — or swapped, if it needs to be — and after that your vehicle is tested. If the engine hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we arrive. The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Bleeding the system with new diesel comes last. You drive off as soon as we have started the engine, and it makes no difference whether your car is on a drive around Bracebridge or in a bay at Lincoln Central. It's tested on new diesel to confirm it runs smoothly before our technicians leave. Our technicians do it all wherever the vehicle has ended up, and it never has to be taken to a garage. The insurer is likely to want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — each handed over afterwards.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Bracebridge

Since each callouts differ, a flat figure would not be honest. Three things change the cost: whether the motor has run and for how long, how much AdBlue went in, and where the vehicle is. That last one comes down to whether a van can get to it safely, and an open drive is easier than a tight spot behind Moorland & Railway Club.

Before any quote, never after, each call from Bracebridge begins with the same three checks: the liquid, the amount, plus whether it ran. Those answers turn a range into a straight quote.

You hear that quote by phone, before anyone sets off, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours while we are on the way.
