AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Bracken Moor? Don't Start It

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, your ignition remains off and so does your motor. Urea mixed in water is all AdBlue is. The trouble starts once it's pulled through your pump — it won't ignite, and it will not combine with diesel. If your engine has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually drained and thoroughly flushed where the car stands around Bracken Moor. Nothing comes before ringing 0333 366 0103.

Bracken Moor, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do at once

To do:

  • Remove the keys, which prevents anyone switching the power on.
  • Near moving traffic? Then put the hazard lights on.
  • Hold on to the receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what was put in and about how much.
  • Ring just where you are. Say a S36 2 postcode or the nearest street sign, and nobody has to search for you.

Things not to do:

  • Not even briefly, and not to roll the vehicle: your engine remains off.
  • Plenty of diesels run their pump the instant your ignition comes on, so leave the car off.
  • AdBlue does not mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding more fuel won't thin it.
  • Never drive the vehicle anywhere, not even a short stretch up Coal Pit Lane.
  • By the road, do not try emptying it on your own.

At a forecourt in Bracken Moor, whether it's the Murco or another one, ask the staff to help you roll your car away from the petrol pump. If you are on your own drive, leave it exactly where it stands.

AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

The motor isn't what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is. Kept in a dedicated tank, it's injected into the exhaust stream to clean the fumes. Not one side fits the other: urea doesn't belong in a pump, and a pump can't deal with urea.

Poured in with your diesel, it stays separate rather than mixing — quite unlike fuel. It drops, since it's heavier than diesel, and settles down where the intake takes its supply from. Easiest of all: a vehicle that got AdBlue in Stubbin overnight and hasn't turned since. The liquid sits at the base of your tank, undrawn — though it will be the first thing through if the engine starts, ahead of any diesel at all.

It does two kinds of harm from there. What is left when the water goes is urea, which forms crystals: they settle in narrow passages and clog filters. Worse, it eats at some metals in a fuel system, and keeps going till it's cleared out. A motor left standing in Bracken Moor with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank isn't. Water lubricates nothing. The high-pressure pump and each injector need diesel running past them, and so the water part harms them by itself.

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is commonly worse

Top up a diesel with petrol in error at the JET, and the problem is thinned fuel. Damage only comes from running on it. Mixed into your diesel and left inside that tank, it does nothing.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid as such is simply the wrong one. It does not burn, so it cannot just be run through. It doesn't stay mixed, and so it can't be weakened. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your motor "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether the vehicle is in Royd or the middle of Bracken Moor.

The same good news applies as with petrol. Clearing a tank is the simplest job on any fuel system, and with no running, the AdBlue remains in there — anywhere across South Yorkshire your car has stopped.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Bracken Moor: how it ends up there

In dim light, two caps side by side — the AdBlue cap and the diesel one, now and then under a single flap — may appear the same. Nobody intends it; plenty of designs allow it. Mostly it's never the forecourt: someone buys a container heading home and tips it in outside the house.

A few familiar ways cover the majority of them. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up takes place in a hurry outside Stocksbridge Junior School. After work, a bottle is tipped in on a drive near Bracken Moor Lane. Or the car is topped up in the car park at The Red Grouse, in poor light, by a person who has never opened that flap before.

It crops up the most in a hire car, a new vehicle, a company motor, or the other vehicle of a home with both fuel types — the cars people use the least. Wherever you are around Bracken Moor or the rest of South Yorkshire, it's the same error and the same first answer: leave it off.

Already started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Bracken Moor?

The AdBlue has left your tank, then. The filter and pipework have had it sucked through, and any running time takes it on to the high-pressure pump and each injector.

Lumpy running, smoke from the exhaust, lost power, dashboard warnings or cutting out: any may appear, maybe part way across Bracken Moor or coming back from the green space at the edge of the village. Stop when it is safe. Turn off. Keep the car off rather than restarting it to check. Each start pulls more of it through.

On the M1, under 5 miles from Bracken Moor, the next junction is where to leave, and anywhere safe is where to park — not driving on.

Hopping across Bracken Moor to the car park by Stubbin Estate Community Centre is one matter; driving for Sheffield, under 10 miles away, is another, since every mile pushes the AdBlue deeper in. So mileage matters. About how far it had come is worth telling us.

Once the motor has been started, the flush includes more, and all of it is done where the vehicle has stopped. Very seldom does it leave permanent damage if it's noticed early.

Bracken Moor: how AdBlue is drained from a diesel

Anywhere it has come to rest around Bracken Moor — a forecourt, a lay-by, a driveway, a road beside Stocksbridge Rugby Club — our van travels to your car. Before anything else our technicians ask what went in, roughly how much, and whether the motor has run, because those answers settle this work.

On the spot, that tank is then drained, and all of the polluted diesel and the urea leave as one. Residue from AdBlue won't wash out unaided, and so the fuel system gets a full flush, which counts much more with urea than for petrol. Fresh diesel goes in once the fuel filter is cleaned — or swapped, if it needs to be — and then the car is tested. If the motor has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once our engineers arrive. The equipment is explosion-proof, and so a live filling station is no fault, and it's quiet enough for a residential street after dark.

Finally, the fuel system is primed with fresh diesel. Whether it is a parking bay outside Penistone or a driveway around Bracken Moor, that is where our engineers start the car and you set off. We check it runs smoothly on fresh diesel before we leave. Our engineers do it all wherever the car has stopped, and it never needs to be taken to a workshop. Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come afterwards.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Bracken Moor: the cost of fixing it

Every job differs, and so no single quote would be fair. Three things change the price: whether your engine has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue went in, and where the vehicle is. That last one comes down to whether a technician can reach it safely, and an open drive is easier than a tight gap behind Stocksbridge Christian Centre.

Ahead of any figure, never after, every call from Bracken Moor begins with the same three checks: the liquid, the amount, and if the engine ran. Given them, a range narrows to one fixed number.
