AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Breadsall, and What to Do Next

One thing matters most when AdBlue is in a diesel tank, and that is if your motor has run since. Out in Morleymoor or right around Breadsall, an unrun motor should remain that way. Ring 0333 366 0103 with the key and engine both off. In Breadsall, such a case is generally drained and flushed where it stands. Stop the moment you safely can then switch off, if it has already run. Step one remains unchanged, even if the work grows.

Find the scenario below that matches yours, wherever across Derbyshire it happened.

Breadsall forecourt: AdBlue in a diesel at the pump

You're at the pump, the nozzle or the bottle still in your hand, and you have just noticed the cap you opened was the wrong one. Maybe you are at the Morrisons, maybe at the Shell, possibly somewhere else in Breadsall.

What it means: this is the ideal location to find out. The AdBlue is inside the tank and nowhere else. Nothing has sucked it in.

Your move: keep out of the car, even if the pump needs clearing. Ask the staff to help you roll the vehicle into a parking bay, keep your receipt or the bottle, and call us from the forecourt. Our equipment is explosion-proof and fine on a busy forecourt, and so a car that cannot be pushed clear is emptied right at the pump.

Breadsall, at home: AdBlue in your diesel tank

Days had passed with the dash light on. A bottle bought at the garage, emptied in at the drive — and it's only by the bin that the cap caught a second look. It takes place on drives just off Brookfields Drive as frequently as anywhere.

What it means: if you haven't driven since, this is almost as good as the forecourt. Diesel and AdBlue stay apart: the AdBlue drops to the floor of the tank and stays there, however long it waits.

Put the keys indoors tonight — or a person may take it off first thing — then phone us. Our engineers drain the vehicle on your drive, whether that is around Breadsall or out in Breadsall Hilltop. The pumps are quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Set off with AdBlue in a diesel around Breadsall?

You filled up, set off, and a mile or two later the motor began to run roughly, smoke, lose power or light up the dashboard. Somewhere on Brookside Road or else heading towards Derby — under 3 miles away.

Meaning? The fuel pump has sucked the AdBlue up. It has been through the fuel filter and the fuel lines and, the further you went, into the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors. More miles, more restarts: deeper it travels.

Do this: pull up anywhere sensible, then switch your engine off. Breadsall lies under 10 miles from the M1; on it, pull off at the first junction instead of pushing on for the services. Starting it again to check achieves nothing — AdBlue never clears itself. Call, saying how far the vehicle was driven.

AdBlue in the wrong tank: hire, lease and company motors

You've only had this car for days. Unbeknown to you, the two fillers sit side by side here — unlike your own car, which has no AdBlue or stores it in another spot. Anyone, anywhere in Derbyshire, might make it.

The upshot: just as above, divided by if it ran, only with an added stage. Work on the vehicle often requires the owner's go-ahead under hire or fleet agreements.

Settling it before we arrives is quicker, and so phone the rental company or your fleet manager, and then us. Waiting for a reply in the car park outside Derby, or near 175th Derby Scout Group? Keep the engine off meanwhile.

Breadsall: unsure whether it was AdBlue in the diesel tank?

"I think so" is sometimes as honest as it gets. A faint ammonia whiff hangs around your filler, the bottle feels too light, and which cap came off is a blur. The gates of Breadsall CofE VC Primary School in a rush, say, or a friend's driveway out in Darley Abbey.

What it means: a little spilled about the filler does no damage to your engine. The diesel tank with AdBlue in it is another story. Any AdBlue in your tank will be drawn in by starting your car, and the start wouldn't settle which it is in any case.

What to do: treat it as if it went in. Do not start it. Phone and give what you saw: we'd rather find a clean tank than drain one once the engine has been run.

The common ground in every Breadsall AdBlue drain

Whichever situation you are in, the job starts the same way. Three questions are asked once our technicians reach your car — on a filling station, a drive, a street by All Saints' Church or the car park outside The Windmill: the fluid, the quantity, and whether it has run. Over the phone, ahead of anything else, you are told our quote, and those replies shape the work too.

Then your tank is cleared and your system cleaned thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol: AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't rinse out on its own. Fresh diesel is put in after the filter has been cleaned or replaced, and the car is then checked. Where the engine has not run, allow roughly half an hour on site, for most cases.

The final step is firing it up. Before we go, it is tested to make sure it runs properly on clean diesel. Permanent damage is very uncommon if it is noticed early, and the whole job is done where the vehicle is. For your insurer: the engineer's report and the VAT invoice. For you: payment that day, no money upfront. Dig out your insurance while we arrive: cover for misfuelling is included in many policies.
