Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Brean: Why It Happens
Pause here for a moment if your diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, and call 0333 366 0103. A drain and a thorough flush, carried out right where your car sits in Brean, is normally all it takes if found before your engine runs. Nothing happened yet? Further down, the rest of the page covers the reasons it occurs and the ways to prevent it for good.
Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?
Many newer diesels in Purn, like those in Brean, carry on two fluids; the engine gets just the diesel. The exhaust, not your engine, is where AdBlue goes: sprayed into the fumes to clean it, from a separate tank.
Separate tanks, different fillers. On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet. Topping up your diesel side at the pump happens all the time. Much less regularly, the AdBlue side is filled — mostly from a bottle, by a person thinking about where it goes. Mistakes happen in the gap between them.
How AdBlue in your diesel tank occurs around Brean
Carelessness rarely causes it. What does is three things lining up together.
The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out completely, the vehicle goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Brean Court before work, or in the car park at The Beachcomber on the way home.
The old car's filler is where your hand goes — but a rental car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers elsewhere. That's a second thing: an unfamiliar car.
A spouted bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, once begun, carries on. Berrow or the middle of Brean: it takes the same few seconds in both.
Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler
Check these first, at a forecourt around Brean or a driveway over in Uphill. Seconds, no more.
- Check the cap instead of going by where it sits: AdBlue caps are regularly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally aren't.
- Plenty of vehicles fit AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.
- Open the flap and look for a label — many cars mark which goes in each filler right there.
- The handbook. If your filler is not by your diesel cap, it is in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.
- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Weston-Super-Mare.
AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank
A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever in Somerset that is.
- Not in a rush on the side of Wesley Close, not on a slope, not with your motor running: park then switch off properly.
- Silly as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew the cap works — after you have located the filler and read it.
- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.
- Finish when that tank fills or the bottle runs dry; before that, pour gently using the own spout.
- Close the cap, and look again — confirm your diesel filler remained shut throughout. Only then, start the car.
Spot at step two or three that it's already gone into your diesel side? So stop just there. Stage five stays out.
Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Brean?
The short order of things, starting with no starting your engine. The fuel pump runs on plenty of diesels the moment your ignition is switched on — so leave it off. Filling up with diesel won't weaken it: instead, AdBlue drops to the base of that tank, just where fuel is taken from.
The attendants at Esso, Applegreen or another forecourt will usually lend a hand pushing the car away if asked. At home around Brean? Then the vehicle stays where it is.
Already started? Stop when it is safe, then switch off. On the M5, under 5 miles from Brean, that means the next junction. Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Cardiff, under 15 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Brean.
Our arrival in Brean, and what happens next
By Berrow Primary Church Academy, close to Stardust Leisure or on your own driveway: wherever your car has stopped, our technicians come to it. Those replies settle the work and the price, so we ask what went in, about how much, and if it's run. You hear that price on the phone, before anyone sets off.
Then your tank is emptied and your system purged thoroughly. More than with petrol, it matters with AdBlue: the crystals form, some metals corrode, and nothing clears away unaided, however long it sits. Testing is last: before that, clean diesel is added, and the filter is cleaned or replaced as needed. The engine is fired up next and checked to make sure it runs properly, all before we leave.
Most jobs are finished in about half an hour once we get there, provided your engine hasn't run — and the pumps our technicians use are fine on a live forecourt and quiet at night beside a house. Payment is on the day, not upfront, and you are given the documents your insurer wants: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours while we are on the way.
