Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Bredbury: Why It Happens

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your engine and your ignition off then call 0333 366 0103. Around Bredbury, catching it before your motor runs normally leaves draining and a full flush where it stands. Here before the event? In that case the rest covers how it comes about and how to prevent it happening at all.

Why does AdBlue in a diesel motor need its own filler?

Not one fluid but two: that is what many modern diesels near Bredbury and Tang run, with diesel feeding your engine. Its own tank keeps it, and from there it is sent to the exhaust, and there a spray treats the fumes.

Every tank has a filler of its own. Under one flap, side by side: that is the arrangement on many vehicles. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler sits beneath the bonnet or in your boot instead. Filling your diesel side at the pump happens all the time. Far less commonly, the AdBlue side gets filled — mostly from a bottle, by a person thinking about where it goes. It is in the gap that the error happens.

Bredbury: how AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs

Carelessness rarely causes it. What does is three things coming up at once.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it runs out completely, the vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Hyde Road before work, or in the car park outside The Woodley Arms on the way home.

The old car's filler is where the hand reaches — yet a hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers elsewhere. That's a second factor: a strange car.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the tip after it has started. The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Bredbury or out in Woodley.

The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

A few seconds is all these take — so run through them before you tip anything, on a drive in Greave or a forecourt in Bredbury.

  • Where it sits misleads; the cap does not. AdBlue caps tend to be blue or bear the word "AdBlue" — diesel caps usually don't.
  • The size. On many vehicles the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.
  • Lift the flap and check for a label — many vehicles mark what goes in which inlet just there.
  • In the boot or under the bonnet: that is where your filler sits if it's not by the diesel cap, and the handbook says which.
  • Picking up a hire or company car, say at the car park outside the nearest station? Check with whoever drove the car last before leaving, rather than once the light goes on.

Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

Anywhere in Greater Manchester the light comes on, here is a routine for that day.

  • Not in a rush on the side of George Lane, not on a slope, not with your engine running: park and switch off first.
  • Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once you find the AdBlue filler and reading it. Silly, perhaps, yet it does the trick.
  • The diesel cap stays on. Where the two share a flap, make sure it is shut before lifting the bottle.
  • Stop once the tank is topped up or the bottle runs dry; before that, pour gently through the built-in spout.
  • Shut the cap, then look again — confirm the diesel cap stayed closed the whole time. Only then, start the car.

Spot at stage two or three that it has already gone into the diesel side? So stop just there. Skip step five entirely.

Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Bredbury?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start the motor. Don't switch your ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump. AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is pulled from — so do not top up with diesel to thin it.

If you're on a forecourt, whether it's the Esso or the Morrisons, ask the attendants to help push the car clear of the pump. Your own driveway in Bredbury is the place it stays.

When your motor has run by now, pull over safely and switch the vehicle off. On the M60, under a mile from Bredbury, that means the next junction. About how far did it go? Hopping across Bredbury is less a job than a trip of under 10 miles to Manchester, so tell us.

Our arrival in Bredbury, and what happens next

Our engineers come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside Bredbury St. Marks CofE Primary School, close to St Mark's or on your own driveway. Both the work and our quote rest on three answers — which liquid, what amount, and if it's run — so our technicians ask. You get that quote by phone, before anybody heads out.

The fuel system is then purged thoroughly, once your tank is cleared. Not like petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and attacks certain fuel-system metals, and neither washes out by itself. That is why it matters more. Filter flushed or, if it must be, swapped; fresh diesel in; and then a check of your car. We do not go until it has been fired up and is running properly.

If your engine has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night. Your insurer usually wants the engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and both are yours at the end. Payment is on the day, with no money upfront. While we travel, take a look at your insurance documents; many carry cover for misfuelling.
