Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Brianside

Motor off, ignition off: that is how you begin if AdBlue has got into the diesel tank. Urea dissolved in water is all AdBlue is. It doesn't burn, it does not mix with diesel, and the harm it does starts when your fuel system pulls it in. If your engine has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally drained and carefully rinsed where your car stands in Brianside. Nothing comes before calling 0333 366 0103.

Brianside, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do at once

Do these:

  • Take your keys out, and so nobody switches the ignition on.
  • Put the hazards on if you are at all close to moving traffic.
  • So you can give us which fluid it was and roughly what quantity, keep the till receipt or the empty bottle.
  • Ring right where you are. Say a LS14 6 postcode or the closest street sign, and no one has to hunt for you.

Not to do:

  • No starting your motor — not briefly, not to reposition your vehicle.
  • Don't switch the ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • Do not top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel; it separates out.
  • Any driving at all is best avoided, even a short way down Inglewood Place.
  • Do not try to drain the car yourself by the kerbside.

Ask the people behind the counter to help you move the car away from the island if you're at a forecourt around Brianside, whether it's the Shell or elsewhere. Parked on your own driveway? Then it stays just as it is.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

The engine is not what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is. Stored in a dedicated tank, it is squirted into the exhaust to treat the fumes. A fuel pump isn't designed to cope with it, and AdBlue was never intended to go through one.

It does not combine. Once it's tipped into a tank of diesel, AdBlue acts not at all like fuel. Denser than diesel, it drops and collects underneath it — the very place the pickup sucks from. A motor topped up on a drive in Parklands yesterday evening and not started since is the simple one. No pump has pulled the AdBlue up so far — though when your engine runs, that's what is pulled first, straight from the bottom of your tank.

Two kinds of harm follow from there. As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps working on the parts it gets to for as long as it remains there. Pipes holding AdBlue spell damage overnight for a vehicle parked in Brianside. Only inside that tank, it stays stable. And there's the water: it brings no protection to the parts that need it the most — the injection pump and each injector.

Why AdBlue in a diesel is frequently more serious than petrol

Put petrol in a diesel at the BP and you have a fault of thin fuel. No damage is done as long as it stays unused, mixed into your diesel — only when your engine runs on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a fault of the wrong substance altogether. Not burning, it cannot just be run through. Crystals and corrosion stay after the next fill, and AdBlue separates back from the diesel, so thinning it won't work. That is why the flush matters more, and trying your engine "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than nearly any other mistake — in Swarcliffe or the centre of Brianside alike.

As with petrol, there's good news. If the motor has not run, the AdBlue is still in that tank, and the tank is the quickest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever across West Yorkshire your car is standing.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Brianside

It's not on purpose. Many cars keep the AdBlue inlet alongside the diesel inlet, now and then behind one flap, and muddling them up is simple in poor light. A bottle picked up while heading home and tipped in at home, rather than at the filling station, is the usual route.

It tends to happen in a couple of familiar ways. Rushing, outside Parklands Primary School, after a warning lamp came on during the school run, someone refills the car. Close to Inglewood Drive, someone pours a bottle in on the drive after work. Else, in dim light by New Travellers Rest, the car is refilled by someone using that flap for the first time.

The least known cars get it most — hire cars, new cars, company ones, and the spare vehicle in a home with both fuel types. Wherever you're around Brianside or the rest of West Yorkshire, it's the same error and the same first answer: leave the car off.

Brianside: started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer in your tank. Via the fuel filter, along the pipework, and — given any running — on to the high-pressure pump and every injector: that is how far it travels.

You may notice the motor running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, maybe on the way back from Seacroft Park or halfway across Brianside. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart the vehicle to check. More of it is pulled through with each start.

Exit the M1, under 3 miles from Brianside, at the next junction and park somewhere safe, rather than driving on.

Distance counts: every mile carries the AdBlue further into your system, and so heading towards Leeds, under 5 miles away, makes a much larger job than crossing Brianside to the car park by Parklands Childrens Centre. Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

There's more to clean out once the motor has been started, and we do all of it where the vehicle has ended up. Very seldom does it leave permanent damage when it is caught quickly.

Clearing AdBlue in a diesel around Brianside: what it takes

Our technicians come to your car, wherever it has stopped in Brianside: a side street close to Barnbow Lasses, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. Three answers shape the work, and so first our engineers ask what went in, roughly the amount, and whether your engine has turned over.

On the spot, the tank is then emptied, and both the contaminated diesel and the urea leave at once. Your system is rinsed thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own. Next, your filter: flushed, or changed if it must be. Then clean diesel, then a test of your vehicle. If your motor has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once our engineers are there. The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Last, your system is bled with new diesel. You set off as soon as our engineers have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether the car is on a drive in Brianside or in a bay by Cross Gates. We confirm it runs properly on new diesel before we leave. Our technicians do it all wherever the car has ended up, and it never needs to be taken to a workshop. You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report afterwards, which is what insurers want.

Brianside: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Not one single figure could be fair, since every job differs. The cost shifts first with how long, if at all, your engine has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that was put in. After that it depends on where the vehicle is and whether our van can get to it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight gap behind Seacroft Methodist Church.

What went in, what quantity, and if the engine ran: each Brianside enquiry begins by asking precisely those, ahead of a figure, not afterwards. Those answers turn a range into a straight quote.

Before a van sets off, you are told our price on the phone. Then you pay on the day, card or by phone, with nothing upfront. Misfuelling cover is part of many insurance policies, so it pays to look at yours before the van gets there.
