Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Bridgwater

If AdBlue has got into your diesel tank, leave your motor off and keep the ignition off. Water with urea mixed in it: that is AdBlue. Not like fuel, it neither burns nor mixes, and nothing happens until the motor pulls it through. In Bridgwater, AdBlue in a diesel tank found before the engine runs usually means a drain and a thorough flush, just where the car is. No step comes before calling 0333 366 0103.

Those opening minutes: AdBlue in the diesel tank around Bridgwater

Do:

  • Take the keys out, and so nobody switches the ignition on.
  • Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere close.
  • Which product, and roughly how much volume? Save the bottle or the receipt, and our technicians will know.
  • Ring right where you are. Say a TA6 3 postcode or the nearest street name, and nobody has to hunt for you.

Not to do:

  • No starting the motor — not for a second, not to shift the car.
  • Plenty of diesels run their pump the instant the ignition goes on, and so leave the vehicle off.
  • Do not top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel; it separates out.
  • Leave it where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short way down St Mary Street.
  • Don't try to drain the vehicle yourself by the kerbside.

At a forecourt around Bridgwater, whether it is the Morrisons or another one, ask the attendants to help you roll your car away from the pump. If you're on your own drive, leave it precisely where it is.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Not your motor but the exhaust is where AdBlue belongs. Stored in a separate tank, it's injected into the exhaust to treat the fumes. Not one side fits the other: urea doesn't belong in an injection pump, and a pump can't deal with urea.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, after tipped in, will not. The behaviour is not at all like fuel's. It drops, since it is heavier than diesel, and settles low where the intake takes its supply from. The first thing the fuel system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a motor that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Hamp last night, and has not been started since, is still the simple case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of that tank, and nothing has drawn it in.

From there it causes two kinds of harm. It attacks some metals used in fuel systems, attacking whatever it reaches until it's cleared from your system. And when the water evaporates, the urea turns into crystals that clog filters and settle in narrow passages. A vehicle left standing around Bridgwater with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank isn't. Then there's the water: it offers no lubrication to the components that rely on it most — the high-pressure pump and every injector.

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is regularly worse

Put petrol in a diesel at the Esso and you have an issue of thin fuel. Damage just comes from driving on it. Blended into the diesel and left in that tank, it does none.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid itself is plainly the wrong one. Since it does not burn, running it through is not an option. Deposits and corrosion remain through the next fill, and AdBlue separates back from the diesel, so watering it won't work. Hence the flush matters more, and trying the engine "to see" does more harm here than nearly any other mistake — in Wembdon or the heart of Bridgwater equally.

The same good news holds as with petrol. Clearing a tank is the easiest part on a fuel system, and without running, the AdBlue remains in it — wherever in Somerset your vehicle has stopped.

How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank in Bridgwater?

In dim light, two caps together — the AdBlue cap and the diesel one, occasionally behind a single flap — can appear the same. Nobody intends it; plenty of layouts allow it. Most of the time it occurs with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the forecourt.

It tends to happen in a couple of familiar ways. The top-up is rushed outside Northgate Primary School, because your dash flashed with a warning as the kids were taken in. Near High Street, someone pours a container in on that drive after work. Else, after dark by The Duke, the car gets topped up by a driver opening that flap the first time.

Hired vehicles, new cars, fleet vehicles, or the spare vehicle in a family with both fuels: the least known cars get it most. Wherever you are around Bridgwater or the remainder of Somerset, it is the same error and the same first answer: leave the vehicle off.

Started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank in Bridgwater?

Then the AdBlue has left that tank. The fuel filter and lines have had it pulled through, and some running time takes it on to the high-pressure pump and each injector.

Perhaps returning from Elmcroft, or part way across Bridgwater, your engine may go lumpy, smoke, lose pace, flash your dash or stall. Pull over when safe. Turn off. Leave the vehicle off instead of restarting it to check. With each start, more of that is pulled through.

If you were on the M5, under 3 miles from Bridgwater, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere safe instead of pressing on.

Distance matters: each mile carries the AdBlue deeper in, so heading towards Wells, under 25 miles away, gives a much larger job than crossing Bridgwater to the car park by Bridgwater Town Hall. Tell us about how far it had come.

Wherever the vehicle came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to flush after the motor has been run. Long-term damage is very unusual if it's spotted early.

Bridgwater: how AdBlue is emptied from a diesel

The car remains put, whether that's a road beside St Mary's Church, a drive, a lay-by or a filling station in Bridgwater, and the van travels to it. Which fluid was put in, about the quantity, and if your motor has turned over: our technicians ask first, because those decide the work.

Next, draining the tank right there takes out the polluted diesel and the AdBlue in one go. A full flush counts much more after AdBlue than after petrol, since residue will not clear out on its own. The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested. About half an hour once we arrive is typical for most jobs where your motor has not run. The pumps are explosion-proof, safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

The final step is to prime the system on clean diesel. Starting the engine comes next, and then you set off from where your car is parked, outside the nearest station or on a drive in Bridgwater. It's checked on new diesel to make sure it runs smoothly before our engineers leave. No workshop is required at any point, with the entire job done then and there. At the end, you are given the paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Bridgwater

Each job differs, and so not one fixed price is fair. Three things change the cost: whether the motor has run and for how long, how much AdBlue got in, and where the vehicle is. That last one comes down to whether a technician can get to it safely, and an open drive is simpler than a tight space behind The Avenue.

Before any figure, never after, every enquiry from Bridgwater begins with three checks: the liquid, the quantity, and whether it ran. With those replies, a range narrows to a single firm figure.

The price is quoted during the call, before a van sets off; payment happens on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront. Misfuelling cover is part of plenty of insurance policies, so it pays to look at yours before the van arrives.
